Book Christianity in Its Modern Expression Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christianity in Its Modern Expression Classic Reprint written by George Burman Foster and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in Its Modern Expression George Burman Foster was born on the second of April, 1857, and died on the twenty-second of December, 1918. Prior to his occupancy of the chair of the Philosophy of Religion in the University of Chicago he was Professor of Systematic The ology in the Divinity School of the same institution. The pres ent volume embodies his lectures on the dogmatics and ethics of the Christian religion in the form in which these were last delivered to his theological classes. The main body of the book is made up of the dictated portion of the lectures. The foot-notes contain a report, also practically verbatim, of elabora tions and extemporaneous remarks introduced by the lecturer at the indicated points of the main discussion. Former students will recognize here especially many of the brilliant and memorable sayings of this inspiring and thought-provoking teacher. Professor Poster was a remarkably sympathetic interpreter of points of view other than his own. But in his exposition of the appreciations and viewpoint of the Christian religious man, one knew that it was not a case of understanding through mere sympathetic imagination; he was speaking out of the depths of his own experience. He knew what religion was, for it was his daily life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Christianity: Or the Plain Gospel Modernly Expounded To whom the sermons herein contained were preached, as, judging from their prefaces, is usually the case with volumes of printed sermons. It is published so as to preserve, in a form more permanent than the spoken word, certain things which I have felt moved to utter, which do not seem to me to have been altogether said by others. The sermons here published do not for mally constitute a body of theology, but they have been selected and arranged with a view to presenting, in some sort of sequence, and with some regard to the due pro portion of emphasis, the essentials of Christianity the Incarnation, the Resurrection, the Ascension, and the re-incamation, if I may so put it, of the spirit of Jesus in His followers. I think I may claim that the doctrine expressed in these sermons is ancient orthodox, and Catholic; but the mode of statement 18 modern, and the emphasis doubtless different from that to which some of my hoped for readers are accustomed. Not my self a good reader of sermons, nor even always a good listener, I have hesitated long in publishing my mate rial in sermon form; but after careful consideration I have concluded that it will be on the whole more intel ligible to and more readable by my desired public in. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and the Modern Mind Partly because of the limitations of space, and partly because any real insight into the proc esses can be gained only by long discipline and training. Here my function, if humble, is none the less honourable. It is that of a kind of theological middleman, who would mediate to thoughtful but non-academic per sons the main conclusions about the origin and meaning of the Christian Religion, to which the general body of scholars have come or are coming. Hence my aim Is not critical, but positive and constructive. There are Signs that more criticism is losing its interest for thoughtful minds within the Church. This has come about partly because criticism has largely done its work - a great and noble and necessary work - and partly because the human soul cannot permanently live by oriti cism alone, but ever seeks to go beyond it in search of something to which criticism is a mere preliminary. Hence there is a craving today for a richer, a more positive expo sitiou of the great truths of Christianity than. And in these two elements is found the secret of its name. It is the Seventeen, not because there are or ever have been seventeen members, but becausethat is the arbitrary limit set to its membership. It is the Theological Seventeen, not because its members claim to be theologians of distinction or authority, but because they are interested in theology, hold that it has a message for this modern world, and that the truth which it upholds will free a world enchained by old concepts, half-truths, and new fancies. Attempt to keep the new wine in the old bottles? That can only end in destroying the bottles and spilling the wine. Attempt to stop the fermentation? Impossible And if possible, the only result would be to spoil the wine. No! Put the new wine into new bottles, that both may be preserved. Spir itual experience is always new. It must there fore find a new expression in each age. This book is an attempt to restate the eternal yet ever new truths of the religious life in the terms of modern phiiosophic thought. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Crisis in Religion Hen invited by the publishers to furnish a volume for the International Pulpit it was with me a question whether to select twenty or thirty sermons embracing as many diverse topics, or to choose a number closely related to each other and dealing with one great theme of present interest. For reasons that need not be stated here I decided on the latter course. Much has been written of late on the signs of religious decadence. On both sides of the Atlantic fears have been expressed that Christianity has lost for good and all its hold on mankind; and satisfaction, in some quarters, has not been disguised that its final collapse is evidently so near at hand. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Life in the Modern World These questions have created in many thoughtful minds a profound sense of perplexity, and even of alarm. The world which confronts a modern man is very different from the provincial and primitive environment of the New Testament teaching; but even though this new world is less likely than that of Crete to produce liars, beasts, and glut tons, it seems quite as hard to adjust to the maxims of the Christian Gospel. A modern man, for example, finds himself compelled by circum stances to devote two-thirds of his waking hours to the making of his living and the securing of a margin of income, but when he turns, in some hastily snatched interval, to the New Testament,4 the christian life IN the modern world. Book excerpt: A New York Times Notable Book, winner of the Jerwood Award from the Royal Society of Literature, a New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice, and named a Book of the Year by the Telegraph, Spectator, Observer, and BBC History Magazine, this bold new history of the rise of Christianity shows how its radical followers helped to annihilate Greek and Roman civilizations. The Darkening Age is the largely unknown story of how a militant religion deliberately attacked and suppressed the teachings of the Classical world, ushering in centuries of unquestioning adherence to "one true faith." Despite the long-held notion that the early Christians were meek and mild, going to their martyrs' deaths singing hymns of love and praise, the truth, as Catherine Nixey reveals, is very different. Far from being meek and mild, they were violent, ruthless, and fundamentally intolerant. Unlike the polytheistic world, in which the addition of one new religion made no fundamental difference to the old ones, this new ideology stated not only that it was the way, the truth, and the light but that, by extension, every single other way was wrong and had to be destroyed. From the first century to the sixth, those who didn't fall into step with its beliefs were pursued in every possible way: social, legal, financial, and physical. Their altars were upturned and their temples demolished, their statues hacked to pieces, and their priests killed. It was an annihilation. Authoritative, vividly written, and utterly compelling, this is a remarkable debut from a brilliant young historian.

This book was released on 2018-01-16 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dilemma of the Modern Christian How Much Can He Accept of Traditional Christianity? The following pages contain no attempt to solve the insoluble questions of modern thought. What has been aimed at is simply a statement concerning the central facts of Christian faith and worship. There are many people to whom the penumbra of faith is too congenial to allow them to feel at ease in the bright light of the central sun. Some of these may appreciate an honest expression con cerning the difficulties of their position. Those whose faith has suffered total eclipse - if there be any such - will not be influenced by another person's assurance that the sun still shines unto the coming of the perfect day. With those who have reached finality about the mo mentons questions of Christian prayer, the writer seeks no quarrel. He is aware that he has nothing to offer them. Book The Christian Faith and the New Day Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christian Faith and the New Day Classic Reprint written by Cleland Boyd McAfee and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Faith and the New Day This is not a reconstruction of theology but a plea for that work and some suggestion of a few typical points where it is needed and opportune. A teacher of theology shrinks a bit when it is said that the day for theology is over; he is apt to think in stead that the day has just come for vital religion which will mean a vital theology. But such a teacher knows well that theology can be devitalized by mistaking its own expressions for the truth it is trying to express. Visitors to theological seminaries often tell young men they are not to preach their theology, whereas in any sound way of speaking it is the only thing they are to preach. Yet the most deadly thing that could be preached is a theology that does not carry the message of religion for its own day. The appeal herein is not to technical theologians but to working ministers and thoughtful laymen who, after all, build and use the theology that is living and who sometimes fear to see it change. The great days just passed have given many of us a renewed assurance that Christianity is more vital and forceful than it has been for many a long day. Its vitality may well claim the right to phrase itself anew - which means to reconstruct theology at any point where it may need reconstructing. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of Religion, Fundamental Faiths Expressed, in Modern Terms The prospect of death influences individual acts and sits as an unbidden spectral guest in the coun sels of nations. Death confronts us wherever we turn. It injects its virus into the heart of the germinating oak, breathes its withering breath upon the budding flower, and sets its seal upon the new-born child. Its sombre shadow falls across life's every pleasing prospect, and its skeleton hand adds a drop of gall to every cup of pleasure. It is a party to every human contract, and love's joys and privileges are held subject to its caprice. The fear of it springs up with every form of intelligent life, and remains until at last the quivering heart is still. Very few people have escaped its ravages. Nearly all have stood helplessly by and seen the last breath of a loved one gasped away, leaving the dear face pallid and expressionless, and the once Winsome eyes glazed and immobile.
