Book Christianity in Its Modern Expression Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christianity in Its Modern Expression Classic Reprint written by George Burman Foster and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity in Its Modern Expression George Burman Foster was born on the second of April, 1857, and died on the twenty-second of December, 1918. Prior to his occupancy of the chair of the Philosophy of Religion in the University of Chicago he was Professor of Systematic The ology in the Divinity School of the same institution. The pres ent volume embodies his lectures on the dogmatics and ethics of the Christian religion in the form in which these were last delivered to his theological classes. The main body of the book is made up of the dictated portion of the lectures. The foot-notes contain a report, also practically verbatim, of elabora tions and extemporaneous remarks introduced by the lecturer at the indicated points of the main discussion. Former students will recognize here especially many of the brilliant and memorable sayings of this inspiring and thought-provoking teacher. Professor Poster was a remarkably sympathetic interpreter of points of view other than his own. But in his exposition of the appreciations and viewpoint of the Christian religious man, one knew that it was not a case of understanding through mere sympathetic imagination; he was speaking out of the depths of his own experience. He knew what religion was, for it was his daily life. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars of religion have come a long way since William James famously made of religion a matter between man and his maker. For decades now, they have been attentive to the ways in which religion takes shape as the product of broad social forces, focusing on the dynamics of power and culture as heuristics for understanding religious phenomena and experience. What, however, might they be missing by moving too quickly from one interpretative extreme to the other—and what might we learn about religion by staying in the interstitial space between the individual in her solitude and society as a whole? Religious Intimacies, edited by Mary Dunn and Brenna Moore, brings together nine scholars of modern Christianity to probe this in-between space. In essays that range from treatments of Jesuit-indigenous relations in early modern Canada to the erotics of contemporary black theology, each contributor makes the case for the study of the presence and power of affective ties and relational dynamics between friends, lovers, and intimate others (even things) as vital to the understanding of religion.

Book Medieval Wisdom for Modern Christians

Download or read book Medieval Wisdom for Modern Christians written by Chris R. Armstrong and published by Brazos Press. This book was released on 2016-05-17 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Christians today tend to view the story of medieval faith as a cautionary tale. Too often, they dismiss the Middle Ages as a period of corruption and decay in the church. They seem to assume that the church apostatized from true Christianity after it gained cultural influence in the time of Constantine, and the faith was only later recovered by the sixteenth-century Reformers or even the eighteenth-century revivalists. As a result, the riches and wisdom of the medieval period have remained largely inaccessible to modern Protestants. Church historian Chris Armstrong helps readers see beyond modern caricatures of the medieval church to the animating Christian spirit of that age. He believes today's church could learn a number of lessons from medieval faith, such as how the gospel speaks to ordinary, embodied human life in this world. Medieval Wisdom for Modern Christians explores key ideas, figures, and movements from the Middle Ages in conversation with C. S. Lewis and other thinkers, helping contemporary Christians discover authentic faith and renewal in a forgotten age.

Book excerpt: Historical revelation, the triune God, original sin, the Mediator, resurrection--these are central to the Christian message at the same time major stumbling blocks to modern thinking. Emil Brunner examines these five doctrines in light of the deep abyss that separates man's religious aspirations however high, from Christian faith. For each doctrine the noted theologian sets the biblical teaching against the opposing philosophical argument. As a brief presentation of key elements in Dr. Brunner's theological position, this book serves as an excellent introduction to his larger works. As an orderly statement of Christian beliefs, it reveals how the scandal of Christianity is the touchstone of the gospel.--from back cover.
