Book The Making of Christian Moravia 858 882

Download or read book The Making of Christian Moravia 858 882 written by Maddalena Betti and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-10-24 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Making of Christian Moravia Maddalena Betti examines the creation of the Moravian archdiocese, of which St Methodius was the first incumbent, in the context of ninth-century papal policy in central and south-eastern Europe. In the nineteenth and twentieth century religious and nationalistic concerns widely influenced the reconstruction of the history of the archdiocese of Methodius. Offering a new reading of already widely-used sources, both Slavonic and Latin, Maddalena Betti turns attention upon the jurisdictional conflict between Rome, the Bavarian churches and Byzantium, in order to uncover the strategies and the languages adopted by the Apostolic See to gain jurisdiction over the new territories in central and south-eastern Europe.

Book Christianization and the Rise of Christian Monarchy

Download or read book Christianization and the Rise of Christian Monarchy written by Nora Berend and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-11-22 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2007 text is a comparative, analysis of one of the most fundamental stages in the formation of Europe. Leading scholars explore the role of the spread of Christianity and the formation of new principalities in the birth of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Bohemia, Hungary, Poland and Rus' around the year 1000. Drawing on history, archaeology and art history, and emphasizing problems related to the sources and historiographical debates, they demonstrate the complex interdependence between the processes of religious and political change, covering conditions prior to the introduction of Christianity, the adoption of Christianity, and the development of the rulers' power. Regional patterns emerge, highlighting both the similarities in ruler-sponsored cases of Christianization, and differences in the consolidation of power and in institutions introduced by Christianity. The essays reveal how local societies adopted Christianity; medieval ideas of what constituted the dividing line between Christians and non-Christians; and the connections between Christianity and power.

Book Biblical Humanism in Bohemia and Moravia in the 16th Century

Download or read book Biblical Humanism in Bohemia and Moravia in the 16th Century written by Robert Dittmann and published by Brepols Publishers. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume focusing linguistically and historically on Czech biblical humanism in the 16th century. Bohemia and Moravia have an outstanding place in the history of biblical translation. Following the Slavonic tradition of Great Moravia and the interest in biblical translation ignited anew by the Church reform in the 15th century, there appeared in the 16th century a number of new translations of the bible or its parts into Czech. Most of them were printed and survived, others are know to us only due to reports. This volume traces transmission of the biblical text in the 16th century by the Czech translators employing humanistic methods. All the new translations analyzed here turn away, consciously and to a various degree, from the preceding redactions of the Czech biblical text based on the Latin Vulgate.

Book excerpt: If you have heard of Moravians-persecuted Christians that fled to Germany in the early 1700s-you most likely know of their prayer meeting that lasted one hundred years, their missions to Greenland, to the native Americans, to Suriname, the Virgin Islands, or India's Malabar Coast. But quite likely you heard less, or nothing, of the story behind those wonders of faith and perseverance. Through everything the Moravians accomplished around the world shines an infinitely greater wonder-that of the Lamb of God for sinners slain. Perhaps, through reading this book, you may catch glimpses of that "greater wonder" and find yourself inspired to live and do like they did in our time.
