Book Christianity Applied to Our Civil and Social Relations Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christianity Applied to Our Civil and Social Relations Classic Reprint written by Hubbard Winslow and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-05 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity Applied to Our Civil and Social Relations The following discourses are not a connected series, though all of them aim at the same principle. As they touch upon subjects of agitating interest, and have occassioned severe strictures, it is thought best to give them.to the public in their original form. The author has a high esteem for many who differ from him respecting the most Christian way of treating certain subjects tending to alienations in church and state, especially masonry and slavery But it is hoped that we all have in view the same good object; let us then speak out our views freely and in love. Now that the excitement of the moment is over, if, on reading and calmly pondering the sentiments of these discourses, any Christian brethren are justly grieved or offended, none will more regret it than the author, by whom, with fervent prayer for the divine blessing upon them, they are presented to the public. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Applied Christianity: Moral Aspects of Social Questions One fact thrusts itself in our faces as soon as we ask this question this great increase of wealth is visible mainly, after all, in Christian lands. We said that the world is growing rich, but it is our world the world with which we are brought into closest political and commer cial relations - oi which this is true; it is not true of the teeming populations of Africa, save of those tribes that have received Christianity; of them it is true. It is not true of China, nor of India, nor of Persia, nor of Turkey to any great extent. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Church and the Social Problem

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the Social Problem: A Study in Applied Christianity This volume is written with the conviction that the Christian Church of the twentieth century faces a crisis of the utmost importance; and that it can only meet the needs of the age by adapting its teaching and methods of work to the peculiar conditions of our times. This fact has been often pointed out during the past few years by men of masterly power, but it must be confessed that few of the workers in the Church have heard the call and earnestly assumed the task of applying Christian principles to the social problems of our modern life. Many pulpits seem stereotyped in thought and utterance, and many Churches cemented in the forms of their activity. While this condition pertains, there is a demand for the multiplication of literature on Christian Ethics, and the application of the Gospel to society. Book Christianity and the Social Rage Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christianity and the Social Rage Classic Reprint written by Adolph A. Berle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and the Social Rage This volume is the outcome of studies ranging over a considerable space of years in which public opinion has changed many times concerning the subjects discussed in the various chapters. The prevailing note of the period in which we are living is one of social aspiration and communal happiness and well being. It is a noble and holy hope which longs to see righteousness among men and the Kingdom of God visibly ruling in the hearts and activities of men. There is little in the life of Americans nowadays which is not in some way tinctured with this desire. But like all such aspirations, the border line between rational growth and progress and fanatical rage, is not always observed, with the result that what begins by being a perfectly sound protest against onerous conditions and iniquitous principles eventuates often in a mere rage for change which not only is not rational, but defeats the very purposes for which the reform was originally begun, forgetting upon what it rests. I have endeavored in all cases to state the case for the reformers as vigorously and as clearly as they could or have stated it for themselves. Book The Christian Society Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christian Society Classic Reprint written by George Davis Herron and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-21 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Society The church was not sent to be an institu tional dominion, but a sacrificial and redemp tive life in the world. Yet the church is not engaged in sacrifice and redemption, so much as in artificial organization; not engaged in discerning and teaching right from wrong, so much as in definition of doctrines. The anal ogy between Protestant Christendom in rela tion to its mission of social redemption, and the relation of the Jewish church to the first appearance of the Son of God, is true. I am haunted continually with the vision of the liv ing Jesus weeping over our majestic temples of worship, our halls of theology, our conven tions of religion, as though he were again in the sacred sorrow of that weeping over Jerusa lem, his heart again broken because' only the remnant may receive the mission which the institution rejects.but, whatever be the form in which they are destined to be shaped, the work which the Christian societies, as socie ties, have to do, in the days that are to come, is not inferior to any work which has lain before them at any epoch of their history. For the air is charged with thunder, and the times that are coming may be times of storm. There are phe nomena beneath the surface of society of which it would be hardly possible to overrate the significance. There is a widen ing separation of class from class: there is a growing social strain: there is a disturbance of the political equilibrium there is the rise of an educated proletariat. To the problems which these phenomena suggest Christianity has the key. Its unaccomplished mission is to reconstruct society on the basis of brotherhood. To you and me and men like ourselves is committed, in these anxious days, that which is at once an awful responsibility and a splendid destiny - to transform this modern world into a Christian society, to change the socialism which is based on the assumption of clashing interests into the socialism which is based on the sense of spiritual union, and to gather together the scattered forces of a divided Christendom into a confederation in which organization will be of less account than fellowship with one Spirit and faith in one Lord - into a communion wide as human life and deep as human need - into a Church which shall outshine even the golden glory of its dawn by the splendor of its eternal noon. Book Christianity and Socialism

Download or read book Christianity and Socialism written by Thomas Voaden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-08 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and Socialism: A Lecture We commend those who, for the good of all, invest their wealth in the higher things of civil ization, as performing acts of social justice, but such gifts, however munificent, do not make atonement or reparation for wrongs perpetrated in the iniquitous acquisition of wealth. The blood of the oppressed toiler will continue to cry to Heaven for justice, notwithstanding the high plaudits with which these gifts are greeted. When the living wage is not made the first factor in determining the price of manufac tured articles, and in the sweat-shop the scale of wages is so low that our maidens have set before them the awful choice between hunger and dishonor, and in the factory young children are stunted in mind and body by excessive labor. It is time for the Church to aid in driving these things from the holy places of our civiliza tion, and to urge its members, who in corporate bodies and otherwise are served by labor, to keep themselves clear of guilt in these economic relations. Book Social Christianity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Social Christianity Classic Reprint written by Hugh Price Hughes and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Christianity For many years I have obstinately resisted the importunity of valued friends who have urged me to publish a volume of sermons. I have not deemed any utterance of mine worthy permanent record. My too busy life affords no time for theological or literary elaboration. But of late the pressure to publish has greatly increased. Above all, it has come to my knowledge that several young Agnostics have been brought to Christ by reading some of the following sermons, which appeared in The Methodist Times. If the Divine Father is pleased to use me thus to bring back to Himself any of my wandering brothers, I dare not consult my own taste or preference any longer. And now that the Rubicon is crossed, I am comforted by the fact that, although the literary form of this volume must bear all the marks of haste inseparable from a very active and varied ministry, the exposition of Christianity which it contains is the slow fruit of a lifetime of observation, reflection, and experience. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and the Social Crisis Western civilization is passing through a social revolution unparalleled in history for scope and power. Its coming was inevitable. The religious, political, and intellectual revolutions of the past five centuries, which together created the modern world, necessarily had to culminate in an economic and social revolution such as is now upon us. By universal consent, this social crisis is the overshadowing problem of our generation. The industrial and commercial life of the advanced nations are in the throes of it. In politics all issues and methods are undergoing upheaval and re-alignment as the social movement advances. In the world of thought all the young and serious minds are absorbed in the solution of the social problems. Even literature and art point like compass-needles to this magnetic pole of all our thought. The social revolution has been slow in reaching our country. We have been exempt, not because we had solved the problems, but because we had not yet confronted them. We have now arrived, and all the characteristic conditions of American Hfe will henceforth combine to make the social struggle here more intense than anywhere else. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Christianity, From the Birth of Christ to the Abolition of Paganism in the Roman Empire For clergymen, also, and for all who cultivate sound theological learn. Ing, this work will be valuable. Though not embracing the whole ground of Church History, and, therefore, not meeting all their necessities, it takes up many subjects of no small importance, and treats them in a very able and interesting manner. On most of the topics which come within the range of his plan, Mr. Milman makes good use of what he justly de. Nominates the unwearied industry, the universal command of the litera. Ture of all ages and all countries, and the boldness, sagacity, and impar tiality in historical criticism of the modern German writers and he in. Genuously acknowledges himself under too much obligation to them not Openly to express his gratitude. Yet he is far from adopting all their conclusions. He is aware of the wild aberrations to which they are ia eident, and he is sedulous, and, for the most part, successful in selecting from them only what appears sound and valuable. Among the subjects of interest to theologians which Mr. Milman has discussed, are, the character of the different Pagan Religions, and their ia uences on society; the Grecian Philosophy, and its effects the Oriental Philosophy, and its legitimate offspring, the Gnostic and Manichzean sects; the in uences of this philosophy on the prevailing opinions and modes of thinking among the Jews, at the time of Christ's advent, and, consequently, Upon the language of the New Testament, and on the conceptions and the belief of Christians in the early ages, and even down to modern times the origination of asceticism, penance, celibacy, and bodily mortifications from this philosophy; the progress of Christianity in the four first centu. Ries, and the decline and fall of Paganism in the Roman empire the long struggles of the latter, first for victory, and then for existence, its artifices, its assumption of new forms, new principles, and a new organization bor rowed from the Church; the origin of the Christian Hierarchy, and its advances in power and wealth, and its complete dominion over the Church and the consciences of men; the spread of monkery in the fourth and fifth centuries, and its effects the changes in legislation and government, in the manners and customs of the people, in the arts, literature, and the general state of society, in consequence of the prevalence of Christianity. Besides these subjects, which properly fall within the s00pe or design of the work, Mr. Milman, as already stated, has gone over the entire history of the Saviour and his apostles. He likewise gives a pretty full and interest. Ing account of the principal schisms and controversies in the Church, and particularly of the early disagreements between the Jewish and Gentile converts, and of the Donatist and Arian controversies. He also gives us biographies of several of the most eminent fathers, Chrysostom, Basil, the two Gregories, Ambrose, Augustine, Jerome, &c.; and he even recites some of the more interesting martyrdoms.
