Download or read book Christianity and the Leaders of Modern Science written by Karl Alois Kneller and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and the Leaders of Modern Science: A Contribution to the History of Culture in the Nineteenth Century A few days ago the newspapers announced that Mr. Edison had declared himself a materialist. He had satisfied himself that the physico-chemical forces at work in the brain, with the resultant electrical effects, were sufficient to account for all the phenomena of conscious life in man. This was the first public intimation that the distinguished inventor had turned philosopher. He had previously been known as an ingenious contriver of useful mechanisms. He had invented the phonograph, megaphone, kinetoscope, and had introduced many important improvements in telegraphy. His success in bending the forces of Nature to his will had won him a deserved celebrity; he was recognised as an adept in the application of science to practical ends, if not in science itself. Such fame notwithstanding, his profession of materialism left the world wholly unperturbed. No believer saw in it a new menace to his faith; no unbeliever found in it a new justification of his unbelief. The incident passed with a tribute of comment from the press scantier than would be accorded to a horse race or a prize fight. This attitude of the public mind seems to indicate a healthy spread of sober thought, a growing capacity to appreciate at their true value the pronouncements of "science" on the supreme problems of life. Book excerpt: Mystery of the Church presents a global picture of the main themes of current ecclesiology. First, it deals with the institution of the Church and her essential nature. Subsequently the four hallmarks of the Church are described. Her unity and holiness are guaranteed by the sanctity of Christ her Head despite the sinfulness of her members. The catholicity of the Church is also examined from the perspective of Eastern Christendom. The apostolicity of the Church leads to a description of the Petrine Office. The Church is seen as the instrument of salvation, and her relationship with the State and with science is investigated. Finally the Church is pictured as leading to the Kingdom of God. This is the fifth volume of Fr Paul Haffner's systematic exposition of theology - previously published volumes in this series: Mystery of Creation, The Mystery of Mary, The Mystery of Reason, The Sacramental Mystery. Paul Haffner is a priest and professor of theology at Regina Apostolorum University in Rome, visiting professor at the Pontifical Gregorian University, and adjunct lecturer at Duquesne University Roman Campus.

Book Believing Scientists Quotes

Download or read book Believing Scientists Quotes written by Fernando José Walsh and published by Fernando José Walsh. This book was released on 2021-02-13 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main exponents of science are or have been profound believers in God, the Creator of the universe. In this work the reader will find hundreds of phrases emitted by many of them that speak of their faith convictions; and of the relationship between faith and its science. They are mostly recognized scientists who believe not only in one God, but expressly in the God of the Bible. With this book the author continues with the task begun in The Lord of the two books to revive an old, but current idea, that the Creator communicates with human beings through two books of His authorship: Nature (general revelation ) and the Bible (special revelation). “The Creator has given two books to the mankind. In one has shown His majesty, in another - His will ... The two books together inform us not only about the existence of God, but also about His indescribable blessings for us. It is a sin to sow among them weeds and discontent”. Mikhail Lomonosov (1711-1765), father of Russian science.

Book excerpt: A storm has been brewing in society and its treatment, views, and activities toward the Catholic Faith. Some are subtle, others are more brazen -- New Age thought, questionable spirituality, "creedless" Christianity, relativism, scientific skepticism, the triumph of technology, and even the self-styled spirituality of Oprah Winfrey. All these masquerade as "truth," making it tough for the average Catholic to know how to resist, let alone respond. No one is more qualified to pull back the curtain on the challenges the Catholic Church faces today than Al Kresta, popular Catholic author, speaker, and radio show host. A revert to Catholicism, Kresta is well known for his rigorous examination of topics in art, religion, academia, and business. Dangers to the Faith: Recognizing Catholicism's 21st Century Opponents is the perfect springboard for discussing the new world in which the Catholic Church exists today. Learn how to better carry out the missionary mandate of the Church. The question isn't whether you will be a witness to Christ, but whether you will be an effective witness.

Book Inside the Atheist Mind

  • Author : Anthony DeStefano
  • Publisher : Thomas Nelson

Download or read book Inside the Atheist Mind written by Anthony DeStefano and published by Thomas Nelson. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "There is only one way to deal with bullies, even in this politically correct world—and that is to crush them." USA Today bestselling author Anthony DeStefano is tired of playing nice. After years of responding patiently and agreeably to the pseudo-intellectual arguments and tactics of today’s militant atheists, he’s had enough. In this entertaining, no-holds-barred retort to atheism and its proponents, DeStefano reveals the intellectual bankruptcy at atheism’s core and equips believers to respond to its hollow arguments. A witty and devastating takedown of the "new atheist" position, Inside the Atheist Mind systematically debunks the theories of Richard Dawkins, Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, and others, revealing how inconsistent, illogical, and frankly ludicrous their conclusions truly are. Poking fun at atheists in a clever and intelligent way, DeStefano demonstrates just how full of holes the new atheism is and reveals that it is actually a "religion" of its own, complete with a creed, a set of commandments and sacraments, and a rigid moral code with rewards and punishments. More than that, DeStefano exposes that atheism is itself a "superstition" of the worst kind. Using irony and a healthy dose of playful sarcasm, Inside the Atheist Mind lampoons, teases, and deflates the atheist position, unmasking it for what it is--an empty, intellectually barren philosophy, devoid of any logic and common sense.

This book was released on 2020-04-09 with total page 1046 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume in the highly respected Cambridge History of Science series is devoted to exploring the history of modern science using national, transnational, and global frames of reference. Organized by topic and culture, its essays by distinguished scholars offer the most comprehensive and up-to-date nondisciplinary history of modern science currently available. Essays are grouped together in separate sections that represent larger regions: Europe, Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, East and Southeast Asia, the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Oceania, and Latin America. Each of these regional groupings ends with a separate essay reflecting on the analysis in the preceding chapters. Intended to provide a balanced and inclusive treatment of the modern world, contributors analyze the history of science not only in local, national, and regional contexts but also with respect to the circulation of knowledge, tools, methods, people, and artifacts across national borders.
