Book Christianity and the Arts in Russia

Download or read book Christianity and the Arts in Russia written by William C. Brumfield and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contributors to this 1992 book examine various aspects of the relationship among Christianity and the visual arts, architecture and music in Russia. Within this broad area the book concentrates on specific topics rather than attempting a broad survey. Nonetheless, the range of material extends from the earliest stages of the introduction of Byzantine art forms in Kievan Russia to the relation between Christian and folk decorative/iconographic motifs to the use of religious imagery in the work of contemporary filmmaker Andrei Tarkovskii. The related interests of the contributors create a concentration of topics in certain periods such as the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Some of the chapters are academically specialized, others are easily accessible to a general audience; but all are based on thorough and careful scholarship. Christianity and the Arts in Russia is based on, but not limited to, a symposium held at the Library of Congress in 1988 to mark the millennium of Russian Christianity.

Book Splendour and Glory

Download or read book Splendour and Glory written by Irina Barinova and published by Exhibitions International. This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From 19 March to 16 September Splendour and Glory will provide the first overview in the Netherlands of the time-honoured spiritual and artistic traditions of the Russian Orthodox Church. More than 300 religious artefacts - icons, fresco fragments, robes, paintings, historical books and gold and silver objects associated with Christian worship - form the tangible evidence of this rich and enduring sacred institution. Religion has played an essential role in Russian society, from the Church's earliest beginnings in 988, when Grand Prince Vladimir officially adopted Orthodox Christianity as his state religion, until the present. After this 'baptism', the Orthodox faith spread rapidly throughout the realm, adding an extra dimension to church history and art history. The exhibition walls will be richly filled with icons, large and small, centuries old and world famous. Icons are sometimes called windows on eternity, for they are believed to reveal a piece of heaven. Their beauty is without parallel. Attention will focus on the origins and development of Russian icon painting, with Kiev as its birthplace.

Book Modernism and the Spiritual in Russian Art

Download or read book Modernism and the Spiritual in Russian Art written by Louise Hardiman and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2017-11-13 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1911 Vasily Kandinsky published the first edition of ‘On the Spiritual in Art’, a landmark modernist treatise in which he sought to reframe the meaning of art and the true role of the artist. For many artists of late Imperial Russia – a culture deeply influenced by the regime’s adoption of Byzantine Orthodoxy centuries before – questions of religion and spirituality were of paramount importance. As artists and the wider art community experimented with new ideas and interpretations at the dawn of the twentieth century, their relationship with ‘the spiritual’ – broadly defined – was inextricably linked to their roles as pioneers of modernism. This diverse collection of essays introduces new and stimulating approaches to the ongoing debate as to how Russian artistic modernism engaged with questions of spirituality in the late nineteenth to mid-twentieth centuries. Ten chapters from emerging and established voices offer new perspectives on Kandinsky and other familiar names, such as Kazimir Malevich, Mikhail Larionov, and Natalia Goncharova, and introduce less well-known figures, such as the Georgian artists Ucha Japaridze and Lado Gudiashvili, and the craftswoman and art promoter Aleksandra Pogosskaia. Prefaced by a lively and informative introduction by Louise Hardiman and Nicola Kozicharow that sets these perspectives in their historical and critical context, Modernism and the Spiritual in Russian Art: New Perspectives enriches our understanding of the modernist period and breaks new ground in its re-examination of the role of religion and spirituality in the visual arts in late Imperial Russia. Of interest to historians and enthusiasts of Russian art, culture, and religion, and those of international modernism and the avant-garde, it offers innovative readings of a history only partially explored, revealing uncharted corners and challenging long-held assumptions.

Book Gates of Mystery

Download or read book Gates of Mystery written by Roderick Grierson and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gates of Mystery will enable Westerners to experience something of much more than the pleasure of admiring visual beauty. By contemplating the legacy of a great medieval artistic tradition, at least a part of the perfect harmony to which Russian artists and patrons aspired can be recovered. The Russian artistic tradition - springing from Byzantine roots - is here portrayed in its fullness, spanning the whole of the medieval Russian period, from the appearance of a definable Christian state in the eleventh century until the reforms of Peter the Great in the early eighteenth century swept away traditions that by then seemed timeless. Although the main concentration is on religious art - and particularly that of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries - the wide range is shown here in over 100 full-colour plates, including some of the greatest works of the period. With extended essays on both the historical background and on particular strands of Russian art (such as embroidery and icon painting) Gates of Mystery is an ideal introduction to a tradition almost unknown in the modern West.

Book Reformation and the Visual Arts

Download or read book Reformation and the Visual Arts written by Sergiusz Michalski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering a vast geographical and chronological span, and bringing new and exciting material to light, The Reformation and the Visual Arts provides a unique overvie of religious images and iconoclasm, starting with the consequences of the Byzantine image controversy and ending with the Eastern Orthodox churches of the nineteenth century. The author argues that the image question played a large role in the divisions within European Protestantism and was intricately connected with the Eucharist controversy. He analyses the positions of the major Protestant reformers - Luther, Zwingli, Calvin and Karlstadt - on the legitimacy of religious paintings and investigates iconoclasm both as a form of religious and political protest and as a complex set of mock-revolutionary rites and denigration rituals. The book also contains new research on relations between Protestant iconoclasm and the extreme icon-worship of the Eastern Orthodox churches, and provides a brief discussion of Eastern protestantizing sects, especially in Russia.

The question is likely to surprise many American Christians tempted, in spite of themselves, to believe a purely political propaganda. Russia—The Enemy—is both the historical Christian reality and the present hope. In a book of profound contemporary significance, the author has presented both a scholarly and moving history of the Church of Christ in Russia, from its beginnings to the present day, and a deeply sympathetic description of the Russian Church’s Tradition and Life. The author is herself a Russian, a scholar, and a convert from the Orthodox Church in which she was raised. She writes with simplicity and with loving familiarity of things she has not only studied but lived with her heart.
