Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Church and the Social Problem: A Study in Applied Christianity This volume is written with the conviction that the Christian Church of the twentieth century faces a crisis of the utmost importance; and that it can only meet the needs of the age by adapting its teaching and methods of work to the peculiar conditions of our times. This fact has been often pointed out during the past few years by men of masterly power, but it must be confessed that few of the workers in the Church have heard the call and earnestly assumed the task of applying Christian principles to the social problems of our modern life. Many pulpits seem stereotyped in thought and utterance, and many Churches cemented in the forms of their activity. While this condition pertains, there is a demand for the multiplication of literature on Christian Ethics, and the application of the Gospel to society. Book The Christian Ministry and Social Problems Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christian Ministry and Social Problems Classic Reprint written by Charles D. Williams and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Ministry and Social Problems This little volume should be introduced by an apology rather than by a preface. The writer realises that it is the height of presumption for him to enter a field already occupied by such giants as Rauschenbusch and others of like intellectual and spiritual stature. The excuse for doing so is twofold: First, the request of a friend and of the publishers. Upon them must rest some of the responsibility for this venture. And second, the hope that repeated blows may heat the cold iron of the Church's conscience on this vital matter and that perhaps even this slight effort may contribute somewhat to that desired result. The pronoun of the first person has been used freely and frankly throughout the book. It is hoped that it will be taken, not as a mark of egotism, but as quite the opposite. The writer lays no claim to the authority of any considerable learning or research in this field. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and the Social Crisis Western civilization is passing through a social revolution unparalleled in history for scope and power. Its coming was inevitable. The religious, political, and intellectual revolutions of the past five centuries, which together created the modern world, necessarily had to culminate in an economic and social revolution such as is now upon us. By universal consent, this social crisis is the overshadowing problem of our generation. The industrial and commercial life of the advanced nations are in the throes of it. In politics all issues and methods are undergoing upheaval and re-alignment as the social movement advances. In the world of thought all the young and serious minds are absorbed in the solution of the social problems. Even literature and art point like compass-needles to this magnetic pole of all our thought. The social revolution has been slow in reaching our country. We have been exempt, not because we had solved the problems, but because we had not yet confronted them. We have now arrived, and all the characteristic conditions of American Hfe will henceforth combine to make the social struggle here more intense than anywhere else. Book Christianity and Economic Problems Facts Principles Programs

Download or read book Christianity and Economic Problems Facts Principles Programs written by Federal Council of the Churches Service and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and Economic Problems, Facts, Principles, Programs: A Discussion Group Text-Book This book, the second of the Social Problem Discussion Series, has a somewhat different form from the first - "What is the Christian View of Work and Wealth?" It contains a running text instead of reference material gathered from a variety of sources. But it is none the less a discussion course. The outline and the manner of treatment have been determined by the committee and the same kind of discussion has gone into the preparation of the course that it is hoped to elicit by means of it. The text has been written with a view not merely to stating facts or declaring opinions, but to laying bare the issues and enabling the group to approach the problems involved in the subject matter. On first thought many of the questions here dealt with seem to be of too technical a nature for popular discussion. What is contemplated, however, is a moral appraisal of the situation presented by industry in the light of our common heritage of ethical ideals. Suggestions to Leaders The leader will doubtless find himself serving the group best if he keeps as much as possible out of its way. He is really the chairman of a meeting. He should not attempt to "put over" any particular point of view, but to see to it that there is fair discussion. To this end, he probably will not wish to take part himself. He will have all he can do if he carries out his duties as chairman, stating the questions, seeing that all sides are represented in the discussion, and summarizing the conclusions. He may find a blackboard of help if he is handling a large group. The chairman will also need to see that the necessary information for intelligent discussion is before the meeting. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Social Duties: From the Christian Point of View, a d104book for the Study, of Social Problems These words of a high - minded writer of recent times may serve as an introduction to the present volume; but we must go farther; we must give a distinctly Christian note to our treatment. While most of what is written here has the broadly human aspect, it is all intended for people who are already inspired by the motive Of love to God as revealed in Jesus Christ, and who desire to learn what the Master requires Of men and women of this generation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Right and Wrong After the War: An Elementary Consideration of Christian Morals in the Light of Modern Social Problems The chapters of this book were originally lectures delivered at the 1917 Conference for Church Workers at the Episcopal Theological School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. At the request of a number of the members of my class, men and women keenly interested in religion and in our modern social life, as it is and as it is to be, I have prepared them for publication. It is to be hoped that no one will suppose them to be presented as final conclusions, dogmatically stated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Christian Sociology: A Series of Lectures at Princeton Theological Seminary and Marietta College on Moral Reforms and Social Problems, With 20th-Century Statistics When politics first came into our author's life as an influence, in the days of Fremont and John Brown, national issues were not questions of commerce but of conscience. The conquering elements of politics then boldly avowed allegiance to the Decalogue and the Golden Rule. It was felt by the most efficient reformers to be a momentous truth that man can neither make nor break law - though it may break him. He can only translate the one supreme law into its applications to current affairs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Classic Texts in Mission and World Christianity

Download or read book Classic Texts in Mission and World Christianity written by Norman E. Thomas and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classic Texts in Mission & World Christianity, a unique sourcebook on the history and mission of the church. Nearly two hundred selections covering the two millennia of the Christian era are represented, including both classic and contemporary voices of persons in mission - women and men, from Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Europe - and key texts for understanding the mission of Christ, the vocation of the church, and the nature of Christianity. Following the outline of David Bosch's monumental Transforming Mission, Classic Texts offers its readers the full texts cited throughout that best-seller, as well as dozens of additional primary sources from every era and every part of the world. From the seventh century abbess Bertilla of Chelles (who directed both women and men missionaries in England) to the Nestorian Monument detailing struggles with issues of contextualization in 8th century China, to David Livingstone's oft-cited espousal of civilization, commerce, and Christianity (seldom quoted in its entirety), Classic Texts provides a depth and breadth of resources unparalleled elsewhere.
