Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Servetus was a unique and central figure in European history. When he was burned alive in Geneva on October 27, 1553, all unbound copies of his major work went up in smoke with him. Today, only three surviving copies of the original publication are known. Except for a fragment of a few pages concerning the famous discovery of the pulmonary circulation, the book was never translated into English. The present edition is the first translation into English and includes the first part of the original text."

Book Servetus and Calvin a Study of an Important Epoch in the Early History of the Reformation

Download or read book Servetus and Calvin a Study of an Important Epoch in the Early History of the Reformation written by Robert Willis and published by Theclassics.Us. This book was released on 2013-09 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This historic book may have numerous typos and missing text. Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1877 edition. Excerpt: ... APPENDIX. An account of the extant copies of the 'Christianismi Restitutio;' of the reprints of the work by Dr. de Murr and Dr. Mead, and of the notices the work has received in earlier and later times. The ' Christianismi Restitutio' of Michael Servetus is one of the rarest books in the world. Of the thousand copies known to have been printed, two only are now known to survive; one of these being among the treasures of the National Library of Paris, the other among those of the Imperial and Royal Library of Vienna. The history of both of these copies, curiously enough, is complete from rather a remote date, and it is somewhat provoking to know that both of them were once in this country; but bigotry sent the one, and want of religious sympathy, presumably, suffered the other to leave our shores. The Paris copy certainly belonged to Dr. Richard Mead, the distinguished physician and medallist, who lived in the reign of Queen Anne, and is believed, before it came into Mead's possession, to have formed part of the Library of the Landgrave of Kur-Hesse. How it got dissevered from this is not known. It was probably stolen and brought to England as to a sure market. Mead, liberal in politics and presumably in religion also, appears to have felt so much interest in Servetus' work, not only by reason of the physiological matter it contained, but because of the free spirit of inquiry it breathed, that he was minded to have it reprinted and made generally accessible. He had accordingly got halfway with a new and handsome edition of the work in 410. form, so far back as the year 1723, when his purpose reached the ears of Gibson, the then Bishop of London. Alarmed at the idea of light being let in on the world that had not been strained through the...

Download or read book Out of the Flames written by Lawrence Goldstone and published by Crown. This book was released on 2008-12-10 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Out of the Flames is an extraordinary story - providing testament to the power of ideas, the enduring legacy of books, and the triumph of individual courage. Out of the Flames tracks the history of The Chrisitianismi Restituto, examining Michael Servetus's life and times and the politics of the first information during the sixteenth century. The Chrisitianismi Restituto, a heretical work of biblical scholarship, written in 1553, aimed to refute the orthodox Christianity that Michael Servetus' old colleague, John Calvin, supported. After the book spread through the ranks of Protestant hierarchy, Servetus was tried and agonizingly burned at the stake, the last known copy of the Restitutio chained to his leg. Servetus's execution marked a turning point in the quest for freedom of expression, due largely to the development of the printing press and the proliferation of books in Renaissance Europe. Three copies of the Restitutio managed to survive the burning, despite every effort on the part of his enemies to destroy them. As a result, the book became almost a surrogate for its author, going into hiding and relying on covert distribution until it could be read freely, centuries later. Lawrence and Nancy Goldstone follow the clandestine journey of the three copies through the subsequent centuries and explore its author's legacy and influence over the thinkers that shared his spirit and genius, such as Leibniz, Voltaire, Rousseau, Jefferson, Clarence Dorrow, and William Osler.

Book excerpt: Please see the description for this title below. But first... Our promise: All of our works are complete and unabridged. As with all our titles, we have endeavoured to bring you modern editions of classic works. This work is not a scan, but is a completely digitized and updated version of the original. Unlike, many other publishers of classic works, our publications are easy to read. You won't find illegible, faded, poor quality photocopies here. Neither will you find poorly done OCR versions of those faded scans either with illegible "words" that contain all kinds of strange characters like , %, &, etc. Our publications have all been looked over and corrected by the human eye. We can't promise perfection, but we're sure gonna try! Our goal is to bring you high quality Christian publications at rock bottom prices. Description: The following work is an attempt to place on record for the first time the history of the three printed copies known to be extant of one of the rarest of theological books. Round this volume, the "Christianismi Restitutio," or Restoration of Christianity, published in 1553, and that of the two smaller works by the same author, and also commented on, arose an ecclesiastical conflict of an almost unparalleled nature, one which brought the author to a martyred end. The attack by Servetus on the doctrine of the Trinity ranged against him the theological giants of the Reformation, such as Luther, Melanchthon, OEcolampadius, Erasmus, and notably Calvin himself. Servetus and Calvin are, however, chiefly dealt with, as the title of this work indicates. While thanking the Library Committee of the Edinburgh University for granting permission to reproduce the facsimiles, I am also indebted to Mr A. W. K. Miller, of the British Museum, and Mr W. K. Dickson, Keeper of the Advocates' Library, Edinburgh, for useful help. To Principal Gordon, Manchester, I am also indebted for kindly criticism of a former book, and some of his emendations and suggestions have been taken advantage of in the present work.

Book From Logos to Trinity

Download or read book From Logos to Trinity written by Marian Hillar and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-30 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a critical evaluation of the doctrine of the Trinity, tracing its development and investigating the intellectual, philosophical and theological background that shaped this influential doctrine of Christianity. Despite the centrality of Trinitarian thought to Christianity and its importance as one of the fundamental tenets that differentiates Christianity from Judaism and Islam, the doctrine is not fully formulated in the canon of Christian scriptural texts. Instead, it evolved through the conflation of selective pieces of scripture with the philosophical and religious ideas of ancient Hellenistic milieu. Marian Hillar analyzes the development of Trinitarian thought during the formative years of Christianity from its roots in ancient Greek philosophical concepts and religious thinking in the Mediterranean region. He identifies several important sources of Trinitarian thought heretofore largely ignored by scholars, including the Greek middle-Platonic philosophical writings of Numenius and Egyptian metaphysical writings and monuments representing divinity as a triune entity.

Book John Colet on the Ecclesiastical Hierarchy of Dionysius

Download or read book John Colet on the Ecclesiastical Hierarchy of Dionysius written by Daniel J. Nodes and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-09-26 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The commentary of John Colet (1467-1519) on Dionysius the Areopagite’s Ecclesiastical Hierarchy adapts a work widely neglected by medieval theologians to the early sixteenth century. Dionysius’s “apostolic” model allowed Colet to set ecclesiastical corruption against the ideas for re-forming the mind as well as the church. The commentary reveals Colet’s fascination with the Kabbalah and re-emergent Galenism, but it subordinates all to harmonizing Dionysius and his supposed teacher, Paul. This first new edition in almost 150 years and first edition of the complete manuscript is edited critically, translated expertly, and provided with an apparatus that advances historical, theological, and rhetorical contexts. It resituates study of Colet by identifying a coherent center for his theology and agenda for reform in Tudor England.
