Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Turner Classic Movies Library: Film and history buffs alike will enjoy this engrossing story of Hollywood's involvement in World War II, as it's never before been told. Remember a time when all of Hollywood—with the expressed encouragement and investment of the government—joined forces to defend the American way of life? It was World War II and the gravest threat faced the nation, and the world at large. Hollywood answered the call to action. This is the riveting tale of how the film industry enlisted in the Allied effort during the second World War—a story that started with staunch isolationism as studios sought to maintain the European market and eventually erupted into impassioned support in countless ways. Industry output included war films depicting battles and reminding moviegoers what they were fighting for, "home-front" stories designed to boost the morale of troops overseas, and even musicals and comedies that did their bit by promoting the Good Neighbor Policy with American allies to the south. Stars like Carole Lombard—who lost her life returning from a war bond-selling tour—Bob Hope, and Marlene Dietrich enthusiastically joined USO performances and risked their own health and safety by entertaining troops near battlefronts; others like James Stewart and Clark Gable joined the fight themselves in uniform; Bette Davis and John Garfield created a starry haven for soldiers in their founding of the Hollywood Canteen. Filmmakers Orson Welles, Walt Disney, Alfred Hitchcock, and others took breaks from thriving careers to make films aiming to shore up alliances, boost recruitment, and let the folks back home know what beloved family members were facing overseas. Through it all, a story of once-in-a-century unity—of a collective need to stand up for humanity, even if it means risking everything—comes to life in this engrossing, photo-filled tale of Hollywood Victory.

  • Author : Rodney Stark
  • Publisher : Random House

  • ISBN : 158836500X
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book The Victory of Reason written by Rodney Stark and published by Random House. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many books have been written about the success of the West, analyzing why Europe was able to pull ahead of the rest of the world by the end of the Middle Ages. The most common explanations cite the West’s superior geography, commerce, and technology. Completely overlooked is the fact that faith in reason, rooted in Christianity’s commitment to rational theology, made all these developments possible. Simply put, the conventional wisdom that Western success depended upon overcoming religious barriers to progress is utter nonsense. In The Victory of Reason, Rodney Stark advances a revolutionary, controversial, and long overdue idea: that Christianity and its related institutions are, in fact, directly responsible for the most significant intellectual, political, scientific, and economic breakthroughs of the past millennium. In Stark’s view, what has propelled the West is not the tension between secular and nonsecular society, nor the pitting of science and the humanities against religious belief. Christian theology, Stark asserts, is the very font of reason: While the world’s other great belief systems emphasized mystery, obedience, or introspection, Christianity alone embraced logic and reason as the path toward enlightenment, freedom, and progress. That is what made all the difference. In explaining the West’s dominance, Stark convincingly debunks long-accepted “truths.” For instance, by contending that capitalism thrived centuries before there was a Protestant work ethic–or even Protestants–he counters the notion that the Protestant work ethic was responsible for kicking capitalism into overdrive. In the fifth century, Stark notes, Saint Augustine celebrated theological and material progress and the institution of “exuberant invention.” By contrast, long before Augustine, Aristotle had condemned commercial trade as “inconsistent with human virtue”–which helps further underscore that Augustine’s times were not the Dark Ages but the incubator for the West’s future glories. This is a sweeping, multifaceted survey that takes readers from the Old World to the New, from the past to the present, overturning along the way not only centuries of prejudiced scholarship but the antireligious bias of our own time. The Victory of Reason proves that what we most admire about our world–scientific progress, democratic rule, free commerce–is largely due to Christianity, through which we are all inheritors of this grand tradition.

Book Christus Victor

  • Publisher : Wipf and Stock Publishers
  • Release : 2003-09-05
  • ISBN : 1725254174

Download or read book Christus Victor written by Gustaf Aulen and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2003-09-05 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gustaf Aulen's classic work, 'Christus Victor', has long been a standard text on the atonement. Aulen applies history of ideas' methodology to historical theology in tracing the development of three views of the atonement. Aulen asserts that in traditional histories of the doctrine of the atonement only two views have usually been presented, the objective/Anselmian and the subjective/Aberlardian views. According to Aulen, however, there is another type of atonement doctrine in which Christ overcomes the hostile powers that hold humanity in subjection, at the same time that God in Christ reconciles the world to Himself. This view he calls the "classic" idea of the atonement. Because of its predominance in the New Testament, in patristic writings, and in the theology of Luther, Aulen holds that the classic type may be called the distinctively Christian idea of the atonement.

Book Victory Over a Critical Spirit

Download or read book Victory Over a Critical Spirit written by Jim Hammer and published by TEACH Services, Inc.. This book was released on 2012-11 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Can you believe he is wearing sandals to church?" "I know, and did you see what she brought for potluck? Doesn't see know better?" "Tell me about it, and did you hear that the pastor supports the school board's decision to hire another teacher? How ridiculous! The school doesn't have the money!" Sound familiar? Our church is often plagued with critical comments and a negative spirit. Instead of reaching out to those in the world, we criticize them. And if they do come to church, we are quick to point out their faults in an effort to help them "grow." Of course, we aren't any better with our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. We like to point out what we think other people are doing wrong. If we are to finish the work of spreading the gospel to the world, we must unite and cultivate the fruit of the Spirit. We must become like Jesus and banish our critical spirit and let the Holy Spirit develop a loving character in us. Jim Hammer shares personal stories and insights from his own spiritual journey that has brought him Victory Over a Critical Spirit. This is a must read! "Jim has given us a much-needed message. If we could each incorporate its principles into our lives we would bring a new peace and happiness into our families, the church, and the world." June Strong, author of Project Sunlight and Song of Eve "The toxic results of being judgmental are at the heart of why Christianity and its love message have not swept the world. I thank Jim for writing such a sensitive book and for his vulnerability. May God bless you and your Christian walk as you digest and grow in grace by reading this book." Mike Ortel, president, Northern New England Conference
