Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Truth of the Bible It has been the object of the author to use such language as would be readily understood by the most common class of minds. Sense is never sacrificed to smoothness of sound, and when a few words of rough saxon have served best to express his meaning, he has not labored to dilute them with smooth rhetorical phrases. He does not pretend to say that the arrangement of the Lectures have, in all cases, been the best, but as each Lecture is complete in itself, this is a matter of trifling importance. Book Lectures on Christian Theology Classic Reprint

Download or read book Lectures on Christian Theology Classic Reprint written by George Christian Knapp and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on Christian Theology This was a state of things which Spener de plored. Others before him, especially pious lay men, had noticed these evils, but had withdrawn, like the mystics of a former period, and sought in private contemplation that satisfaction of their spiritual wants which they could not obtain from the learned jargon of the pulpit; or if, like An dreas and Arndt, they had lifted up a voice of rem onstrance against the prevailing disorders, it had been drowned in the noise of angry pole mics. But the reputation and influence of Spener were too great to allow his remonstrances to pass unnoticed. Without aiming at the name, he performed the work of a reformer. In the unpretending form of a preface to an edition of Arndt's Sermons, he published in 1675 his Pia Desidert'a, in which he urged the necessity of amending the prevailing mode of instruction and preaching. It was his great object to divert attention from the symbols, and direct it to the scriptures. He wished every student to derive his system for himself directly from the Bible; and to feel and enjoy the truths thus learned, rather than contend about them; and especially he wished the teachers in the universities, and the preachers in the desk, abandoning for ever their foolish questions and subtle dialectics, to labour to promote the solid instruction and the true piety of those committed to their charge. Download or read book The Madison Avenue Lectures Classic Reprint written by American Baptist Publication Society and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-19 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Madison Avenue Lectures You will therefore, I am sure, regard as timely an argu ment for the soundness and sacredness of the principle, that the Bible is the only proper standard of Christian faith and practice - a principle which may be easily drawn from the language of my text: Howbeit, when He, the Spirit of truth shall come, he will guide you into all the truth. Not - as the authorized version, which omits the article, may suggest - into all truth of whatever domain, scientific, historic, philosophic; but into all the truth which pertains to the religion of Christ as adapted to men in their present state, and which, by its office in making known the moral perfections of God and the way of eternal life for man, outshines all other truth, even as the sun at noonday outshines all other light. Into this truth, the highest and the best, was the Holy Spirit to guide the eleven disciples addressed by our Saviour; and it will be my aim to show that the promise recorded in my text involves the divine authority and completeness of the Bible, as a source of Christian truth. Book Modern Doubt and Christian Belief

Download or read book Modern Doubt and Christian Belief written by Theodore Christlieb and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Doubt and Christian Belief: A Series of Apologetic Lectures Addressed to Earnest Seekers After Truth The following translation is in part the work of Mr. G. H. Venables (translator of Schmid's Biblical Theology of the New Testament), and in greater measure that of the Rev. H. U. Weitbrecht, - the four last Lectures, and the last section (B) of Lecture IV. (from p. 266), having been translated by him. Mr. Weitbrecht, who has just received Deacon's orders in the diocese of Chester, studied for some years in Germany, and being the author's brother-in-law, and former pupil, has throughout been favoured with Professor Christlieb's special sanction and assistance, which have also been extended to other parts of the work. For the objects mainly kept in view in successive portions of this important Treatise, and for some changes made in the present translation, which may almost be regarded as a third edition of the original work, the reader is referred to the author's own account of them in the following Preface. In addition to what is there said, the reader's attention may also be invited to the valuable Exposition of the Scriptural Doctrine of the Trinity in Section A (pp. 244-265) of the Fourth Lecture. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lectures on the Law and the Gospel Gospel of the Blessed God, stated in simplicity and clear ness, in perfect accordance with the instructions of the Holy Scripture, and the Liturgy, Articles, and Homilies of the Protestant Episcopal Church. He humbly trusts that the Glorious Jesus whom he worships as his Lord and his God, -his Great God and Saviour, - will be still pleased to use this work for the manifestation of his glory, the bringing of the vessels of his mercy to an acknowledgment and obedience of the truth, and the guarding of his Church against the vital and dangerous errors which these days have again brought forth, all of which, the author believes, originate in an ignorance, or in confused views, of the relations of the Law and the Gospel to each other and to man. He has also in prepa ration, should his life be spared for their publication, two other works in connection with this; the one under the title of Christ is all, displaying these precious truths in the actual experience of mam - and the other under the title of The good Confession, exhibiting the outward manifestation of their influence and Operation in the Chris tian life. He humbly hopes, and for this end, begs the prayers of Christian friends, that the Glorious King of Zion will graciously accept his efforts in these books to proclaim the truth, to the promotion of his own glory, and the edifying of his Church. And committing his labours to Him, he would adore and glorify God, the Father, the Son, and the Holv Ghost, one Almighty, Gracious God, with thanksgivings and praise, for evermore. Amen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truth in Christian Science: A Lecture Before the College Club, at Boston, Massachusetts That Christian Science has received at the hands of its jcontemporary opponents seems very inadequate and often grossly unfair. Its critics have hardly taken it seriously; and, in such an attitude of mind, abuse and misapprehension have usurped the place of calm analysis and candid dissection. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Half Truths and the Truth: Lectures on the Origin and Development of Prevailing Forms of Unbelief, Considered in Relation to the Nature and Claims of the Christian System The invidious use of this term in theological contro versy must strike all fair minds as the extreme of Invidious meanness and cowardly na manliness. It always alfrgf the injures the cause in whose behalf it is employed. When not a confession of weakness, it is 'a blunder. All are repelled by it, save those whom prejudice or rude pas sion has blinded nor does it influence even these, except for the time being. Though the poisoned arrow with which a prostrate antagonist seeks to wound his cou queror, though the desperate cry by which he summons to his rescue the pack of ignorant and noisy zealots, yet it ever fails to deliver him, while at the same time it makes his defeat doubly disgraceful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Trends of Thought and Christian Truth Several years ago a number of lectures were delivered by me, upon request, on the relation of Christianity to modern issues. These lectures formed the starting point for this volume. Some of them were repeated before the students of Wittenberg College and the Hamma Divinity School. They are now elaborated and put into a form which shall correlate them as a text-book with the logical and philosophical studies, which are usually found in cer tain groups and courses in the Senior year of the college course. There is in them also much material which may serve for apologetic courses in theological seminaries. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
