The first edition was published at Edinburgh in 1834, and has already obtained a very exten sive circulation in Britain. An estimate may be formed of the value of these Lectures, from the fact of their having received the highest praise of some of the most distinguished theological scholars in Scotland and England; and though expressing in the most decided manner the views of the particular denomination with which their author was connected, (the Presbyterian, ) the catholic spirit with which these Opinions are main tained, the candour with which others are stated, and the ability with which the common Christianity is illustrated and defended, may be learned from the fact of their being warmly recommended by the'leading periodicals of nearly all the Protestant denominations of Britain. The study of the contents of Christian Theology in their historic mould belongs to the department of Church History, as the history of the Christian Religion, of Christian Doctrine, of Christian Institutions, and so on. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Christian Doctrine, Vol. 1 This book contains a sketch pf Christian doctrine from the earliest times until the Council of Chalcedon in A.D. 451. By that date the faith of the Church in Jesus Christ was expressed with such clearness that any serious misunderstanding on the subject of His Incarnation was rendered difficult. Some account is also given of the doctrines of the Trinity the Atonement, and the Sacraments, which are so intimately connected with the doctrine of the Incarnation. Brevity has made it necessary to omit many important references and quotations which the writer hopes to incorporate in a larger book on dogmatic theology. Download or read book Historical Theology written by Gregg Allison and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2011-04-19 with total page 898 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historical Theology presents the key pillars of the contemporary church and the development of those doctrines as they evolved from the history of Christian thought. Most historical theology texts follow Christian beliefs in a strict chronological manner with the classic theological loci scattered throughout various time periods, movements, and controversies—making for good history but confusing theology. This companion to the classic bestseller Systematic Theology is unique among historical theologies. Gregg Allison sets out the history of Christian doctrine according to a topical-chronological arrangement—one theological element at a time instead of committing to a discussion of theological thought according to its historical appearance alone. This method allows you to: Contemplate one tenet of Christianity at a time, along with its formulation in the early church—through the Middle Ages, Reformation, and post-Reformation era, and into the modern period. Become familiar with the primary source material of Christian history's most important contributors, such as Cyprian, Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Barth, and others. Understand the development of evangelical doctrine with a focus on the centrality of the gospel. Discern a sense of urgent need for greater doctrinal understanding in the whole church. Historical Theology is an easy-to-read textbook for any Christian who wants to know how the church has come to believe what it believes today. Gregg Allison's clear and concise structure make this resource an ideal introduction to Christian doctrine.

This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Christian Theology on the Inductive Method, Vol. 1 The pages which are here submitted to the public are the result of the work of the past thirty years with successive classes of students. The lectures were revised and enlarged with each successive delivery, and several times entirely re written in the effort to meet the questions of current thought, and once with a special view of helping Japanese students who must approach the study of Christian truth from a point of view quite different from that of their European brethren. The principle which underlies the entire work was forced upon the writer while still a youthful pastor striving to minister to the spiritual wants of a congregation in which were a number of keen young men familiar with the current scepticism of forty years ago. In striving to meet this he found that the apologetics of the eighteenth century were of little or no service. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Days of Christianity, Vol. 1 I complete in these volumes the work which has absorbed such leisure as could be spared from many and onerous duties during the last twelve years. My object has been to furnish English readers with a companion, partly historic and partly expository, to the whole of the New Testament. By attention to the minutest details of the original, by availing myself to the best of my power of the results of modern criticism, by trying to concentrate upon the writings of the Apostles and Evangelists such light as may be derived from Jewish, Pagan, or Christian sources, I have endeavoured to fulfil my ordination vow and to show diligence in such studies as help to the knowledge of the Holy Scriptures. The Life of Christ was intended mainly as a commentary upon the Gospels. It was written in such a form as should reproduce whatever I had been able to learn from the close examination of every word which they contain, and should at the same time set forth the living reality of the scenes recorded. In the Life of St. Paul I wished to incorporate the details of the Acts of the Apostles with such biographical incidents as can be derived from the Epistles of St. Paul; and to take. Download or read book The Christian Doctrine of God Vol 1 written by Emil Brunner and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-18 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of God, Vol. 1: Dogmatics Dogmatics is not the Word of God. God can make His Word prevail in the world without theology. But at a time when human thought is so often confused and perverted by fantastic ideas and theories, spun out of men's own minds, it is evident that it is almost impossible to preserve the Divine Word with out the most passionate intellectual effort to te-think its mean ing and its content. The simple Christian may, it is true, under stand and preserve God's Word without theology; but for those Christians who are involved in the thinking of their own day, and who, as children of their own day, are deeply influenced by these currents of thought, an all-inclusive and thorough effort to re-think what has been given' 'to faith ls absolutely indis pensable. This is particularly true for those whose calling it is to proclaim this faith to others. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Christian Philosophy Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Ephraim Langdon Frothingham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Philosophy, Vol. 1 Christian philosophy is necessarily founded upon conceptions of the nature of God, of the origin and nature of the universe, and of the relation of God to the universe and to man. In our time, the greatest con fusion exists, even within the precincts of the Christian chui ch, with regard to these fundamental ideas and conceptions which contradict each other are recognized, either from an external eclecticism, or from an internal inversion by the Destructive Reason with the view to confound opposite ideas in the interest of a nihilistic or of a pantheistic philosophy. This perversion and inver Sion of Christian thought are produced by transcendental philosophy (german in origin) and by evolutionary sci ence (english in origin), which work together to establish in the Church an Antichristian, materialistic, and panthe istic philosophy. There is, in our century, and extending to all departments of intelligence, a renaissance of Pagan thought quite analogous to that effected in the fifteenth century and onward, and our period, equally with that, calls for a new birth or regeneration of Christian thought from a more universal insight into the fundamental ideas of Christianity. From 'the very need of it, therefore, we may look for a new dogmatic form of Christian theology that shall iflcorporate the fundamental and primitive ideas of Christianity, as an historical institution, in forms of imaginative thought which Shall correspond to that more internal condition of the Reason and of the Re. The starry heavens challenge study and interpretation, in the course of which difficult questions are likely to be raised, and upon these conflicting answers may be, and indeed often have been elicited. In like manner the Scriptures chal lenge study and interpretation. In many instances they suggest much more than they expressly state. What they give in the shape of historical facts is often fitted to serve as a basis for a whole train Of inferences respecting the divine kingdom. So the mind is sent off upon far-reaching paths.
