Book Christian Responses to Four Views of the Bhagavad Gita

Download or read book Christian Responses to Four Views of the Bhagavad Gita written by Tom Wilson and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2021-10 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of all the Hindu Scriptures, the Bhagavad Gita is the most widely read by Western audiences. Its brevity belies its complexity; as with all sacred texts, the only way to fully understand its teaching is to learn from those who live out a faith based on that text. This book examines five different readings of the Bhagavad Gita, juxtaposing these readings with a Western Protestant Christian response to both the text and the ideas and theology that lie beneath the surface of the text. Written for students and practitioners of interfaith dialogue, it is a resource to enable richer and deeper conversations between Hindus and Christians.

Book excerpt: From T.S. Eliot to Bede Griffiths, many a Christian thinker has found in the Bhagavad Gita a source of genuine spiritual insight and inspiration. As Christians continue to explore the text in a spirit of dialogue, new points of theological interest are discovered and new insights gained into the meaning and importance of the text for Christian thought and practice. In this collection of Christian commentaries on the Bhagavad Gita, Christian theologians and scholars of Hinduism offer a variety of different perspectives on the text using a diversity of commentarial approaches and styles, from close textual analysis and exegetical comparison to a more general theological reflection on the text, from comparison of the Gita with a particular Christian classic to a focus on specific religious categories such as detachment, incarnation and eschatology. While some contributions focus mainly on the similarities between Christian thought and the Gita, others also engage differences in a mutually critical and constructive way. Each of these commentaries thus offers a distinctive lens through which Christians may read the Bhagavad Gita, and points to the endless possibility and promise of inter-religious hermeneutics, or the religious reading of a sacred text from another religious tradition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Learning Interreligiously offers a series of about one hundred short pieces, written online between 2008 and 2016. They are meant for a wide range of readers interested in interreligious dialogue, interreligious learning, and the realities of Hindu-Christian encounter today, and are rich in insights drawn from teaching, travels in America and India, and the author’s research on sacred texts. The author, a Catholic priest who has spent more than forty years learning from Hinduism and observing religion as a plus and minus in today’s world, has much to share with readers. Some pieces were prompted by items in the news, some go deeper into traditions and probe the rich Scriptures and practices going back millennia, some seek simply to provoke fresh thinking, and others invite spiritual reflection. The book is divided into several parts so that readers can focus on individual events that made the news or on longer term and more concerted study. Familiar texts such as the Yoga Sutras, the Bhagavad Gita, the Qur’an, and key passages from the New Testament will be considered for their spiritual possibilities. Readers will find much here to learn from and respond to as they too consider religion in today’s world.

Book Five Views of Christ in the Old Testament

Download or read book Five Views of Christ in the Old Testament written by Zondervan, and published by Zondervan Academic. This book was released on 2022-10-25 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors of the New Testament regularly quote and allude to Old Testament passages that point to the presence, person, and work of Jesus. Jesus himself claimed that Moses wrote about him (John 5:46). And on the road to Emmaus, Jesus instructed the disciples from "Moses and all the prophets" regarding himself (Luke 24:27). Though Christians affirm that the Old Testament bears witness to Christ, how the Old Testament writers did this is a matter of extensive debate. Furthermore, Christian biblical scholars also debate the degree to which contemporary interpreters of the Bible can follow the hermeneutics of the New Testament authors in using the Old Testament to point to the person and work of Jesus Christ. Five Views on Christ in the Old Testament is the first book to bring together in conversation the major views on how the Old Testament points to Christ. Contributors and views include: The First Testament Priority View (John Goldingay) The Christotelic View (Tremper Longman III) The Redemptive-Historical Christocentric View (Jason DeRouchie) The Reception-Centered Intertextual View (Havilah Dharamraj) The Premodern View (Craig Carter) Each contributor presents their preferred methodology, showing readers how their interpretive approach best explains the biblical data. Additionally, authors provide case studies of various Old Testament passages that equip readers to better compare the strengths and weaknesses of each of author's approaches. This essential resource will help readers learn practical steps to help them read the Old Testament more faithfully as it testifies to Jesus the Messiah.

The OM Mala gives 84 names of OM from Sanskrit texts and explains their meanings in 109 sections or beads: 108 chanting beads and one 'sumeru' bead. Each bead offers the meaning(s), explanation, traditions, etymology, and quotations for one or more names of OM. Popular meanings (like Brahma-Vishnu-Shiva) and rare meanings (like inhalation, holding the breath, and exhalation) are included. The book contains teachings and narratives related to OM from Veda-s, Upanishad-s, Smriti-s, Purana-s, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Gita, Yoga, Tantra, Vaishnavism, Shaivism, and Shaktism. Pearls on OM from poems, plays, and works on music and Ayurveda are presented. The use of OM in Yogic breathing and meditation is explained and the explanations/relevance of OM in Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism is briefly touched upon. Book excerpt: In My Gita, acclaimed mythologist Devdutt Pattanaik demystifies The Bhagavad Gita for the contemporary reader. His unique approach-thematic rather than verse by verse makes the ancient treatise eminently accessible, combined as it is with his trademark illustrations and simple diagrams. In a world that seems spellbound by argument over dialogue, vivaad over samvaad, Devdutt highlights how Krishna nudges Arjuna to understand rather than judge his relationships. This becomes relevant today when we are increasingly indulging and isolating the self (selfimprovement, selfactualization, selfrealization-even selfies ).We forget that we live in an ecosystem of others, where we can nourish each other with food, love and meaning, even when we fight. So let My Gita inform your Gita.
