Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Progress in Utah: The Discussions of the Christian Convention; Held in Salt Lake City, April 3rd, 4th and 5th, 1888 In February, 1888, at a meeting of the Ministers Association of this city, the importance of a convention of all the Christian workers in this region, to discuss the special opportunities and responsibilities devolving upon Christian churches here, in view of the dawning of a new era, was considered and heartily favored by those present. Accordingly an executive committee of one from each of the six Christian denominations located here was appointed, to publish a call for such a convention, prepare a programme and make all needful arrangements. The following call was therefore issued: Christian Convention. Called to meet in Salt Lake City, April 3. It is the belief of representatives of the various Christian denominations in this inter-mountain region that the Christian church, which ought to take the lead in all moral reforms, needs just now to come unitedly to the front in this new commercial, civil and moral era which has just dawned upon us. Christian men and women, and Christian churches generally, need to have their attention turned to the new responsibility which this new era brings, and to the importance of Christian co-operation among the evangelical denominations for the overthrow of certain great evils in this region, and the establishment on their ruins of those institutions which are calculated to promote the welfare of both the State and the Church. Book excerpt: Keep Showing Up is the story of an evangelical Christian church founded in an unlikely place: Utah Valley, the spiritual epicenter of a culture dominated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, home to Brigham Young University and an overwhelmingly Mormon populace. It is a book that asks, "Can a non-Mormon church survive in a place like Utah?" and answers that question with resounding certainty. Written by Scott McKinney, who has served as pastor of CenterPoint Church since 1989, Keep Showing Up chronicles one small church's humble beginnings and its eventual growth into a thriving local church at the center point of LDS culture. More than a chronicle of growth against the odds, it also provides a Biblical approach to building bridges and forging mutual respect by speaking the truth in love. Comprised of more than three decades of experience living and working in a primarily LDS community, Scott McKinney's words are an encouragement to leaders of churches in similar positions elsewhere-a handy blueprint of sorts that seeks to encourage church leaders the world over to "keep showing up" with the Good News of Jesus Christ.

Book Under the Banner of Heaven

Download or read book Under the Banner of Heaven written by Jon Krakauer and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2004-06-08 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • From the author of Into the Wild and Into Thin Air, this extraordinary work of investigative journalism takes readers inside America’s isolated Mormon Fundamentalist communities. • Now an acclaimed FX limited series streaming on HULU. “Fantastic.... Right up there with In Cold Blood and The Executioner’s Song.” —San Francisco Chronicle Defying both civil authorities and the Mormon establishment in Salt Lake City, the renegade leaders of these Taliban-like theocracies are zealots who answer only to God; some 40,000 people still practice polygamy in these communities. At the core of Krakauer’s book are brothers Ron and Dan Lafferty, who insist they received a commandment from God to kill a blameless woman and her baby girl. Beginning with a meticulously researched account of this appalling double murder, Krakauer constructs a multi-layered, bone-chilling narrative of messianic delusion, polygamy, savage violence, and unyielding faith. Along the way he uncovers a shadowy offshoot of America’s fastest growing religion, and raises provocative questions about the nature of religious belief.

Book excerpt: “From one of the brightest of the new generation of Mormon-studies scholars comes a crisp, engaging account of the religion’s history.”—The Wall Street Journal With Mormonism on the nation’s radar as never before, religious historian Matthew Bowman has written an essential book that pulls back the curtain on more than 180 years of Mormon history and doctrine. He recounts the church’s origins and explains how the Mormon vision has evolved—and with it the esteem in which Mormons have been held in the eyes of their countrymen. Admired on the one hand as hardworking paragons of family values, Mormons have also been derided as oddballs and persecuted as polygamists, heretics, and zealots. The place of Mormonism in public life continues to generate heated debate, yet the faith has never been more popular. One of the fastest-growing religions in the world, it retains an uneasy sense of its relationship with the main line of American culture. Mormons will surely play an even greater role in American civic life in the years ahead. The Mormon People comes as a vital addition to the corpus of American religious history—a frank and balanced demystification of a faith that remains a mystery for many. With a new afterword by the author. “Fascinating and fair-minded . . . a sweeping soup-to-nuts primer on Mormonism.”—The Boston Globe “A cogent, judicious, and important account of a faith that has been an important element in American history but remained surprisingly misunderstood.”—Michael Beschloss “A thorough, stimulating rendering of the Mormon past and present.”—Kirkus Reviews “[A] smart, lucid history.”—Tom Brokaw

Book The Reed Smoot Hearings

Download or read book The Reed Smoot Hearings written by Michael Harold Paulos and published by University Press of Colorado. This book was released on 2021-06-01 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the hearings that followed Mormon apostle Reed Smoot’s 1903 election to the US Senate and the subsequent protests and petitioning efforts from mainstream Christian ministries disputing Smoot’s right to serve as a senator. Exploring how religious and political institutions adapted and shapeshifted in response to larger societal and ecclesiastical trends, The Reed Smoot Hearings offers a broader exploration of secularism during the Progressive Era and puts the Smoot hearings in context with the ongoing debate about the constitutional definition of marriage. The work adds new insights into the role religion and the secular played in the shaping of US political institutions and national policies. Chapters also look at the history of anti-polygamy laws, the persistence of post-1890 plural marriage, the continuation of anti-Mormon sentiment, the intimacies and challenges of religious privatization, the dynamic of federal power on religious reform, and the more intimate role individuals played in effecting these institutional and national developments. The Smoot hearings stand as an important case study that highlights the paradoxical history of religious liberty in America and the principles of exclusion and coercion that history is predicated on. Framed within a liberal Protestant sensibility, these principles of secular progress mapped out the relationship of religion and the nation-state for the new modern century. The Reed Smoot Hearings will be of significant interest to students and scholars of Mormon, western, American, and religious history. Publication supported, in part, by Gonzaba Medical Group. Contributors: Gary James Bergera, John Brumbaugh, Kenneth L. Cannon II, Byron W. Daynes, Kathryn M. Daynes, Kathryn Smoot Egan, D. Michael Quinn

Book Understanding Your Mormon Neighbor

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Understanding Your Mormon Neighbor, Ross Anderson seeks to help Christians relate to Latter-day Saints by giving insights into Mormon life and culture. Anderson’s work is supported both by his lifetime of experiences growing up Mormon and by current research that utilizes many Latter-day Saints’ own sources. This book explains core stories that form the Mormon worldview, experiences that shape the community identity of Mormonism, and how Mormons understand truth. Anderson shares how most Mormons see themselves and others around them, illuminating why people join the LDS Church and why many eventually leave. Latter-day Saints will find the descriptions of their values, practices, and experiences both credible and familiar. Understanding Your Mormon Neighbor suggests how Christians can befriend Latter-day Saints with confidence and sensitivity and share the grace of God wisely within their relationships. Anderson includes discussion questions for individuals and small groups, black and white photographs and charts, and an appendix that includes “Are Mormons Christians?” and “Should I Vote for a Mormon?”
