Book Positivism and Christianity

Download or read book Positivism and Christianity written by K.H. Klein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essay is conceived as a critical exposition of the central issues that figure in the ongoing conversation between Logical Positivists and neo Positivists on the one hand and Christian apologists on the other. My expository aim is to isolate and to describe the main issues that have emer ged in the extended discussion between men of Positivistic turn of mind and men sympathetic to the claims of Christianity. My critical aim is to select typical, influential stands that have been taken on each of these issues, to assess their viability, and to isolate certain dilemmas which discussion of these issues has generated. I am convinced that the now commonly rejected verifiability theory of meaning is very commonly misunderstood and has been rejected by and large for the wrong reasons. Before it is cast off-if it is to be cast off-what is needed is a reconsideration of that theory and of the objections that its several formulations have elicited. Furthermore, at least partially because of a misconstruing of the verifiability doctrine, there have been some interesting-though in my opinion unsuccessful-claims advanced about the testability-status of sentences expressive of Christian belief. Moreover, in their haste to vindicate Christianity, some apologists have been fairly cavalier, in my opinion, about what "Christianity" involves. This volume offers what I hope will be a clear statement and analysis of the principle points at issue between Positivism and Christianity, together with my own assessment of where the argument stands now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally written in 1903 by Francis Beattie, "Christian Apologetics" is a comprehensive examination of the rational foundations of the Christian faith. This treatise delves into the philosophical, historical, and theological underpinnings of Christianity, offering a robust defense against various critiques and alternative worldviews. This updated edition has been carefully revised to make Beattie's profound work accessible to contemporary readers. The original text, rich in depth but laden with archaic language and complex structures, has been modernized for clarity and readability. Outdated scientific and philosophical references have been updated to reflect current understanding, and spelling, grammar, and syntax errors have been corrected. Moreover, we have replaced the archaic Bible translations with the Updated American Standard Version (UASV) to maintain the integrity of Beattie’s arguments while ensuring accuracy and readability. In this volume, readers will find a systematic exploration of key apologetic themes, including the nature and scope of apologetics, the philosophical foundations of theism, the psychological aspects of religious belief, and the critical examination of antitheistic theories such as atheism, materialism, and agnosticism. Each chapter is designed to build upon the last, creating a cohesive and compelling case for the rationality and necessity of the Christian faith. This edition retains the scholarly rigor of the original work while making it more accessible to today's readers. It is an essential resource for students, scholars, and anyone interested in the intellectual defense of Christianity. By bridging the gap between historical and contemporary thought, this revised edition of "Christian Apologetics" ensures that Beattie's invaluable insights continue to enlighten and inspire.

Download or read book The Slain God written by Timothy Larsen and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2014-08-29 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout its entire history, the discipline of anthropology has been perceived as undermining, or even discrediting, Christian faith. Many of its most prominent theorists have been agnostics who assumed that ethnographic findings and theories had exposed religious beliefs to be untenable. E. B. Tylor, the founder of the discipline in Britain, lost his faith through studying anthropology. James Frazer saw the material that he presented in his highly influential work, The Golden Bough, as demonstrating that Christian thought was based on the erroneous thought patterns of 'savages.' On the other hand, some of the most eminent anthropologists have been Christians, including E. E. Evans-Pritchard, Mary Douglas, Victor Turner, and Edith Turner. Moreover, they openly presented articulate reasons for how their religious convictions cohered with their professional work. Despite being a major site of friction between faith and modern thought, the relationship between anthropology and Christianity has never before been the subject of a book-length study. In this groundbreaking work, Timothy Larsen examines the point where doubt and faith collide with anthropological theory and evidence.

Book Christian Apologetics Past and Present Volume 2 From 1500

Download or read book Christian Apologetics Past and Present Volume 2 From 1500 written by William Edgar and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2011-09-13 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid a revival of apologetics, “few things could be more useful than an acquaintance with how Christian faith was defended down through the ages,” say the editors in their introduction to this two-part anthology. “Access to both historical and contemporary texts gives us fresh insight into how our fathers in the faith responded to the questions facing them.” Volume 2 in this one-of-a-kind resource takes a sweeping look at apologetics from the Reformation to the present. Readings from twenty-six apologists, including Martin Luther, John Calvin, Blaise Pascal, Jonathan Edwards, Søren Kierkegaard, Francis Schaeffer, Alvin Plantinga, and William Lane Craig are included. With editorial commentary and questions for reflection, Christian Apologetics Past and Present will prove a valuable text for students as well as a unique resource for those interested in defending the faith.
