Book Christian Mysticism Didactic Press Paperbacks

Download or read book Christian Mysticism Didactic Press Paperbacks written by William Ralph Inge and published by . This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No word in our language-not even "Socialism"-has been employed more loosely than "Mysticism." Sometimes it is used as an equivalent for symbolism or allegorism, sometimes for theosophy or occult science; and sometimes it merely suggests the mental state of a dreamer, or vague and fantastic opinions about God and the world. In Roman Catholic writers, "mystical phenomena" mean supernatural suspensions of physical law. Even those writers who have made a special study of the subject, show by their definitions of the word how uncertain is its connotation. It is therefore necessary that I should make clear at the outset what I understand by the term, and what aspects of religious life and thought I intend to deal with in these Lectures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Merton's lectures to the young monastics at the Abbey of Gethsemani provide a good look at Merton the scholar. A Course in Christian Mysticism gathers together, for the first time, the best of these talks into a spiritual, historical, and theological survey of Christian mysticism—from St. John's gospel to St. John of the Cross. Sixteen centuries are covered over thirteen lectures. A general introduction sets the scene for when and how the talks were prepared and for the perennial themes one finds in them, making them relevant for spiritual seekers today. This compact volume allows anyone to learn from one of the twentieth century's greatest Catholic spiritual teachers. The study materials at the back of the book, including additional primary source readings and thoughtful questions for reflection and discussion, make this an essential text for any student of Christian mysticism.

Book Mystic Christianity the Inner Teachings of the Master

Download or read book Mystic Christianity the Inner Teachings of the Master written by Yogi Ramacharaka and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-07-03 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 100 years western students have been aided by the teachings of Yogi Ramacharaka. Generations of students have found the study of the Ramacharaka texts and the practice of his teachings to be a valuable step in the attainment of wisdom, awareness, and improved health of mind, body and spirit. This collector-quality edition includes the complete text of this enduring classic in a freshly edited and newly typeset edition. With a generous 6"x9" page size, this Summit Classic edition is printed on heavyweight bright white paper with a fully laminated cover featuring an original full color design. Also included is an original detailed biographical sketch discussing the life and work of the secretive author. Mystic Christianity is a comprehensive study of the influence and impact of the beliefs, concepts, principles and philosophy of ancient Judaic and eastern mysticism and the Kabbalah on the religion of Christianity. Presented in a straightforward manner in plain language, the text guides the reader through a study of the ancient mystic and occult doctrines which form the basis of much of the Christian Doctrine as presented in the New Testament of the Christian Bible. Drawing on both ancient and more modern sources, the text sheds light on many of the most confusing, mysterious and paradoxical episodes in the life, teaching, and philosophy of Jesus Christ, revealing Him not as the creator of an entirely new belief system, but as the master and teacher of an ancient system of knowledge and beliefs comprising the "Inner Teachings" previously known only to a handful of initiates. Whether as an introduction for beginners or a self-study guide for more advanced readers, the systematic, straightforward style of the work makes the often abstract and mysterious concepts accessible to all readers, as it explores the role of ancient wisdom and knowledge in the teachings of Jesus, and the later entry, through various means, of concepts which distorted and confused the original message of the Master, a message of the "oneness" of the universe, and the place of man — collectively and individually — in that universe, a universe where there are universal laws at work and universal truths at the heart of existence. Like much of the author's work, the text teaches that the discovery and understanding of these universal laws and truths can be applied to improve the life of the individual, and that humankind's growth and development is an ongoing process which should be directed at the discovery and application of these principles. But the message is also directed to each individual, for each individual is capable of understanding some part of the universal truth, and the application of that part which is within the grasp of the individual will further the mental and spiritual growth and development of that individual. This book is most emphatically NOT an overt rejection of Jesus or his teachings, or the central message of Christianity. But it strips away layers of misleading information added to that message in the ensuing years by often well-meaning disciples and believers who confused and obscured the real teachings of Jesus, teachings grounded in an ancient and mysterious wisdom.

Book The Cloud of Unknowing

Download or read book The Cloud of Unknowing written by James Walsh and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by an anonymous English monk during the late fourteenth century, The Cloud of Unknowing holds an important place in the history of both Western literature and spirituality. Though originally intended for a select audience, the work's simple, engaging style has won it widespread popularity since its rediscovery more than a century ago. The Cloud puts forth a method of contemplation that stresses the impotence of the understanding to break through the cloud of unknowing that separates God and humanity. Rather, "it is love alone that can reach God in this life". In his preface to this volume, Simon Tugwell sums up the challenge that the author of The Cloud presents us today: "If we wish to follow him, we must be prepared to be taxed to the limit. But if we have the courage and the ability to follow him, we shall not find that our efforts has been in vain."

Book The Wisdom of the Pearlers

Download or read book The Wisdom of the Pearlers written by Brian Colless and published by Cistercian Publications Books. This book was released on 2008 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pearlers we meet in this book were early monks of Syria, Mesopotamia (Iraq), and Persia (Iran). They saw themselves as pearl-divers and pearl-merchants searing--through asceticism and prayer--for the precious pearl of mystical experience. Their quest led them into the wilderness, to a state of silent solitude in remote caves and hermitages. Working from Syriac manuscripts in the British Museum, the Vatican Library, the Greek monastery of Saint Catherine in the wilderness of Sinai, and the Coptic monastery of the Syrians (Der es-Suriani) in the Egyptian desert, Brian E. Colless has produced a volume which draws modern readers into the spiritual world of Christian spirituality little know in the West or in the Chalcedonian East.

Book excerpt: In Mystics, William Harmless, S.J., introduces readers to the scholarly study of mysticism. He explores both mystics' extraordinary lives and their no-less-extraordinary writings using a unique case-study method centered on detailed examinations of six major Christian mystics: Thomas Merton, Bernard of Clairvaux, Hildegard of Bingen, Bonaventure, Meister Eckhart, and Evagrius Ponticus. Rather than presenting mysticism as a subtle web of psychological or theological abstractions, Harless's case-study approach brings things down to earth, restoring mystics to their historical context.

Book The Mystical Presence of Christ

Download or read book The Mystical Presence of Christ written by Richard Kieckhefer and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mystical Presence of Christ investigates the connections between exceptional experiences of Christ's presence and ordinary devotion to Christ in the late medieval West. Unsettling the notion that experiences of seeing Christ's figure or hearing Christ speak are simply exceptional events that happen at singular moments, Richard Kieckhefer reveals the entanglements between these experiences and those that occur through the imagery, language, and rituals of ordinary, everyday devotional culture. Kieckhefer begins his book by reconsidering the "who" and the "how" of Christ's mystical presence. He argues that Christ's humanity and divinity were equally important preconditions for encounters, both exceptional and ordinary, which Kieckhefer proposes as existing on a spectrum of experience that moves from presupposition to intuition and finally to perception. Kieckhefer then examines various contexts of Christ manifestations—during prayer, meditation, and liturgy, for example—with attention to gender dynamics and the relationship between saintly individuals and their hagiographers. Through penetrating discussions of a diverse set of texts and figures across the long fourteenth century (Angela of Foligno, the nuns of Helfta, Margery Kempe, Dorothea of Montau, Meister Eckhart, Henry Suso, and Walter Hilton, among others), Kieckhefer shows that seemingly exceptional manifestations of Christ were also embedded in ordinary religious experience. Wide-ranging in scope and groundbreaking in methodology, The Mystical Presence of Christ is a magisterial work that rethinks the interplay between the exceptional and the ordinary in the workings of late medieval religion.
