Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dr. Inge describes mysticism as having 'its origin in that which is the raw material for all religion, and perhaps of all philosophy and art as well, namely, that dim consciousness of the beyond,' and he defines it as 'the attempt to realize, in thought and feeling, the immanence of the temporal in the eternal, and of the eternal in the temporal.' The apostles John and Paul are good examples of true Christian mysticism by which we are enabled to live above the world while still living in it. He ably defends John from the charge of being a mere mystic who had lost his hold upon historical realities. The limitations of the mystical faculty are well set forth in the following sentences: - 'The inner light can only testify to spiritual truths. It always speaks in the present tense; it cannot guarantee any historical event, past or future. It cannot guarantee either the Gospel history or a future judgment. It can tell us that Christ is risen, and that He is alive for evermore, but not that He rose again the third day. It can tell us that the gate of everlasting life is open, but not that the dead shall be raised incorruptible. We have other faculties for investigating the evidence for past events; the inner light cannot certify them immediately, though it can give a powerful support to the external evidence. For though we are in no position to dogmatise about the relations of the temporal to the eternal, one fact does seem to stand out,--that the two are, for us, bound together.' "The volume maintains the reputation of the lectureship for thoroughness of treatment and high literary excellence." -The Bibliotheca Sacra, Volume 57, 1900 "Its author was drawn to the mystics in a quest for personal guidance to a satisfactory philosophy and rule of religious life. He records what he found serviceable, and shows how it may be separated from erroneous principles and methods. The book has the interest which belongs to all such endeavors, where intellectual capacity and equipment combine with sincerity and earnestness. It has the touch of reality, the note of conviction. Its literary form is attractive…..There is a mystical element in Christianity, and in Christian theology and worship. This new volume of Bampton Lectures is a valuable contribution to its appreciation." -Egbert C. Smyth, The American Journal of Theology, Volume 4, 1900 CONTENTS LECTURE I. Book excerpt: William Ralph Inge's exceptional lectures on mysticism in Christianity are among the most authoritative and well-supported writings on the subject to this day. This book comprises eight lectures, which together tackle the subject of mystical phenomena in Christian history. The author first acknowledges the difficulty of arriving at a correct definition of the term 'mysticism' itself - the word has been used in a variety of fields: spiritualists, occultists, historians and religious figures of many faiths all employ it with abandon. For his study, Inge seeks to arrive at a distinctive definition by investigating its origins of 'mysticism' as a concept, beginning in Ancient Greece. Particular attention is drawn to Plato, the ancient Greek philosopher, whose own mystical vision of humanity stands as one of the first written in the West. Inge demonstrates that the influence of Plato upon the early Christians and Gnostic sects - exemplified in the life of St. Paul - is substantial. Mysticism's expression in Christianity continued to evolve after antiquity. The fifth and sixth lectures see Inge navigate the literature of the Medieval period, such as the Theologia Germanica. The lives of certain priests and scholars of the age hold many examples; visions in the form of angels and the Virgin Mary, and religious men informed more by their contemplative inner life close to God as opposed to scholarly, canonical texts. A respected academic and priest, William Inge lived a life characterized by the study of holy texts and classical antiquity. He was prominent in England, and eventually became Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral. His prolific writings found much appreciation in academic circles; the contents of this book are his contributions to the famous Bampton Lectures of 1899, of Oxford University.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No word in our language-not even "Socialism"-has been employed more loosely than "Mysticism." Sometimes it is used as an equivalent for symbolism or allegorism, sometimes for theosophy or occult science; and sometimes it merely suggests the mental state of a dreamer, or vague and fantastic opinions about God and the world. In Roman Catholic writers, "mystical phenomena" mean supernatural suspensions of physical law. Even those writers who have made a special study of the subject, show by their definitions of the word how uncertain is its connotation. It is therefore necessary that I should make clear at the outset what I understand by the term, and what aspects of religious life and thought I intend to deal with in these Lectures.
