First, I have designed to present with scientific accuracy, yet in a popular form, the fundamental principles of Moral Philosophy. Secondly, I have sought to show its inseparable alli ance, at every point, with religion, and especially with Christianity, which I regard. Not as having had its birth midway in human history, but as Truth and Right, co-eternal with God, and revealed and manifested by and in Jesus Christ. Thirdly, I have Wished to illus trate the principles of ethical science, as they are developed in its own and in human history, as they are involved in questions and subjects of current or recent interest, and as they are applicable to the con cerns of daily life. These three aims have been so constantly united in my habits of thinking and teach ing, that, with me, they are virtually one: it remains to be seen whether I shall have made them one to my. At the request of a number of the members of my class, men and women keenly interested in religion and in our modern social life, as it is and as it is to be, I have prepared them for publication. It is to be hoped that no one will suppose them to be presented as final conclusions, dogmatically stated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Religion of All Good Men, and Other Studies in Christian Ethics And being, from the nature of my profession, in contact on all hands with young men of many types belonging to the educated classes, I say, with some confidence, that never, I believe, was the hold of Religion upon the minds of the youth of this country stronger, nor the hold of Christianity weaker. And, with still greater confidence, I would affirm that the difficulty which young men to-day have in accepting Christianity is not Intellectual but moral. I speak that which I know. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Character: A Study in New Testament Morality Christian character, therefore, declares the mind of God in the creation of man. This is man v as God meant him to be. There is no worthier ambition for man than to enter into God's mind regarding him, and to make God's design for him his own resolute endeavour. To become what God would have him be ought to be the passion of man's heart. Any conception of life, even though it be couched in religious phraseology, which falls short of this, is inadequate and misleading. Any representation of Christianity, which makes it pos sible for a man to imagine that he can be right with God when he is not pressing forward to the realisation of God's aim, is false and harmful. To deny that character is the be-all and end-all of religion is worse than intellectual error. Intel lectual error may not touch the springs of spiritual life. Moral stagnation is death. It behoves young men and women, therefore, in uniting themselves with the Christian Church. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Few pages will be duly appreciated only by those who are acquainted with the subject. There are, also, many pit falls of treatment, which prove disastrous to the unwary. Two of them, at any rate, I have tried to avoid, (1) swamping Christian Ethics in Christian Theology, and (2) separating the two provinces so absolutely as to convey the impression that they have no relation to each other. I have, further, endeavoured to respect the sense of proportion in the topics handled. Beyond this, I need make no explanation. The little treatise must explain itself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Morals of Christ: A Comparison With Contemporaneous Systems For, he says, On these two commandments (positive) hang all the Law and the Prophets (negative); or, when he generalizes st'ill farther these same commandments into the Golden Rule - One positive precept Whatsoever ye would that men should do to you do ye even SO to them; and so fulfill the Law and the Prophets. The Mosaic morality said, in substance, DO nothing that is wrong; the morality of Christ, DO everything that is right. The substance of the former, is, Thou shalt do no evil; that of the latter, Thou shalt do good; the substantial command of the former, Thou shalt not hate that Of the latter, Thou shalt love; the principle of the former, justice; that Of the latter, benevolence. The Ten Commandments might more appropriately be called the Ten Prohibitions; while the Sermon on the Mount is the real commandment. In the Old Testament there was restraint and warning put upon the moral man; in the New, liberty and impulse. In the former man Was a slave, under bonds against vice; in the latter he is free, under incentives to virtue. The Mosaic morality said substantially, DO nothing in morality, lest it be an injury; the Christian morality said, Do some thing in morality, since it may be good. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Ethics and Modern Problems The history of moral philosophy, from the Greeks to the nineteenth-century Utilitarians, does not fall within the scope Of this book. Nor will it be necessary to examine in detail different types Of ethical theory, as has been done by Martineau, Sidgwick, Green, and many others. My plan is to take the Ethics Of the New Testament as embodying, on this side, the Chris tian revelation, and to bring these into comparison with the principles which seem to underlie the theory and practice Of the white races in our own day. In this book I am concerned only with Western civilisa tion; I have neither the knowledge nor the space for a consideration Of Asiatic peoples. In the first place, it refers to the plan of the whole treatise. In science generally, but in theology from quite peculiar grounds, it appears to me a matter of doubtful propriety when a department of knowledge which is a common possession has not also a certain common form of treat ment, so that one immediately perceives from the style of discussion whether what is new is meant merely to attempt a better establish ment of an old knowledge of the truth. Where this mode of treatment is unnecessarily departed from, there arises not only the danger of ministering, even if involuntarily, to that craving after novelty which loves not what is true, but only what is new; but one also cuts asunder deliberately the threads of connection which bind to one another the different stages of culture and of knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Ethics: Special Part; First Division: Individual Ethics N the General Part of this work (page 46 3) I gave my views on the relation existing between that and the more strictly practical part, which latter is now presented in two divisions, namely Individual and Social Ethics, the first of which has regard chiefly to the individual, the other to society. So, then, the whole essay is closed herewith, and experts will be able to prove what value may belong to the method here applied to the treatment of Ethics. But if the Special Part was to be connected with the General as a side-piece, there was needed a certain amplitude of statement and a form corresponding to the subjects handled. And from the whole design of this work, it will scarcely require an apology that parts occur in it of an edifying character, or at least bordering thereon. On the whole, it is to be remarked, however, that in the progress of a more ample statement, it is not always easy to hit the boundary between what the author has to express and what he can fitly leave to the reader to say to himself, a difficulty which makes itself felt more especially where so much is treated of that in a certain sense is known to all, although all do not therefore by any means rightly understand or have fully acknowledged it.
