Book Mission Station Christianity

Download or read book Mission Station Christianity written by Ingie Hovland and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-08-08 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Mission Station Christianity, Ingie Hovland presents an anthropological history of the ideas and practices that evolved among Norwegian missionaries in nineteenth-century colonial Natal and Zululand (Southern Africa). She examines how their mission station spaces influenced their daily Christianity, and vice versa, drawing on the anthropology of Christianity. Words and objects, missionary bodies, problematic converts, and the utopian imagination are discussed, as well as how the Zulus made use of (and ignored) the stations. The majority of the Norwegian missionaries had become theological cheerleaders of British colonialism by the 1880s, and Ingie Hovland argues that this was made possible by the everyday patterns of Christianity they had set up and become familiar with on the mission stations since the 1850s.

Book excerpt: A deeper understanding of the grand history of mission leads to a faithful expression of God's mission today. From the beginning, God's mission has been carried out by people sent around the world. From Abraham to Jesus, the thread that weaves its way throughout Scripture is a God who sends his people across the world, proclaiming his kingdom. As the world has evolved, Christian mission continues to be a foundational tradition in the church. In this one-volume textbook, Edward Smither weaves together a comprehensive history of Christian mission, from the apostles to the modern church. In each era, he focuses on the people sent by God to the ends of the earth, while also describing the cultural context they encountered. Smither highlights the continuity and development across thousands of years of global mission.

Book The American Merchant Experience in Nineteenth Century Japan

Download or read book The American Merchant Experience in Nineteenth Century Japan written by Kevin C. Murphy and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American merchants established trading firms in the ports of Yokohama, Kobe and Nagasaki which operated from 1859-1899 until the repeal of the Unequal Treaties. Members of a privileged, semi-colonial community, the merchants formed the largest group of Americans in 19th century Japan. In this first book-length treatment of this group, Kevin Murphy explores their interactions with the Japanese in the treaty port system, how the Japanese leadership manipulated them to its own ends, and how the merchants themselves defined the limitations of American business in Japan through their ambiguous but deep concern with order and opportunity, restraint and dominance, and conservatism and dominance.

Book African Voices on Slavery and the Slave Trade Volume 1 The Sources

Download or read book African Voices on Slavery and the Slave Trade Volume 1 The Sources written by Alice Bellagamba and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-05-13 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the history of slavery is a central topic for African, Atlantic world and world history, most of the sources presenting research in this area are European in origin. To cast light on African perspectives, and on the point of view of enslaved men and women, this group of top Africanist scholars has examined both conventional historical sources (such as European travel accounts, colonial documents, court cases, and missionary records) and less-explored sources of information (such as folklore, oral traditions, songs and proverbs, life histories collected by missionaries and colonial officials, correspondence in Arabic, and consular and admiralty interviews with runaway slaves). Each source has a short introduction highlighting its significance and orienting the reader. This first of two volumes provides students and scholars with a trove of African sources for studying African slavery and the slave trade.

Book Cultural Conversions

    Book Details:
  • Author : Heather J. Sharkey
  • Publisher : Syracuse University Press
  • Release : 2013-08-29
  • ISBN : 0815652208
  • Pages : 348 pages

Download or read book Cultural Conversions written by Heather J. Sharkey and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume study cultural conversions that arose from missionary activities in the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Both Catholic and Protestant missionaries effected changes that often went beyond what they had intended, sometimes backfiring against the missions. These changes entailed wrenching political struggles to redefine families, communities, and lines of authority. This volume’s contributors examine the meanings of "conversion" for individuals and communities in light of loyalties and cultural traditions, and consider how conversion, as a process, was often ambiguous. The history of Christian missions emerges from these pages as an integral part of world history that has stretched beyond professing Christians to affect the lives of peoples who have consciously rejected or remained largely unaware of missionary appeals.

Book American Missionaries Christian Oyatoi and Japan 1859 73

Download or read book American Missionaries Christian Oyatoi and Japan 1859 73 written by Hamish Ion and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japan closed its doors to foreigners for over two hundred years because of religious and political instability caused by Christianity. By 1859, foreign residents were once again living in treaty ports in Japan, but edicts banning Christianity remained enforced until 1873. Drawing on an impressive array of English and Japanese sources, Ion investigates a crucial era in the history of Japanese-American relations the formation of Protestant missions. He reveals that the transmission of values and beliefs was not a simple matter of acceptance or rejection: missionaries and Christian laymen persisted in the face of open hostility and served as important liaisons between East and West.
