Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, arguments for and against the existence of God have been largely confined to philosophy and theology, while science has sat on the sidelines. Despite the fact that science has revolutionized every aspect of human life and greatly clarified our understanding of the world, somehow the notion has arisen that it has nothing to say about the possibility of a supreme being, which much of humanity worships as the source of all reality. This book contends that, if God exists, some evidence for this existence should be detectable by scientific means, especially considering the central role that God is alleged to play in the operation of the universe and the lives of humans. Treating the traditional God concept, as conventionally presented in the Judeo-Christian and Islamic traditions, like any other scientific hypothesis, physicist Stenger examines all of the claims made for God's existence. He considers the latest Intelligent Design arguments as evidence of God's influence in biology. He looks at human behavior for evidence of immaterial souls and the possible effects of prayer. He discusses the findings of physics and astronomy in weighing the suggestions that the universe is the work of a creator and that humans are God's special creation. After evaluating all the scientific evidence, Stenger concludes that beyond a reasonable doubt the universe and life appear exactly as we might expect if there were no God. This paperback edition of the New York Times bestselling hardcover edition contains a new foreword by Christopher Hitchens and a postscript by the author in which he responds to reviewers' criticisms of the original edition.

Book Return of the God Hypothesis

Download or read book Return of the God Hypothesis written by Stephen C. Meyer and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling author of Darwin’s Doubt presents groundbreaking scientific evidence of the existence of God, based on breakthroughs in physics, cosmology, and biology. Beginning in the late 19th century, many intellectuals began to insist that scientific knowledge conflicts with traditional theistic belief—that science and belief in God are “at war.” Philosopher of science Stephen Meyer challenges this view by examining three scientific discoveries with decidedly theistic implications. Building on the case for the intelligent design of life that he developed in Signature in the Cell and Darwin’s Doubt, Meyer demonstrates how discoveries in cosmology and physics coupled with those in biology help to establish the identity of the designing intelligence behind life and the universe. Meyer argues that theism—with its affirmation of a transcendent, intelligent and active creator—best explains the evidence we have concerning biological and cosmological origins. Previously Meyer refrained from attempting to answer questions about “who” might have designed life. Now he provides an evidence-based answer to perhaps the ultimate mystery of the universe. In so doing, he reveals a stunning conclusion: the data support not just the existence of an intelligent designer of some kind—but the existence of a personal God.

Excerpt: ...convinced that the idea ' law' interpreted by the idea ' personality' and incorporated with the fact of cosmic progress by the operation of God, is patient of, and more than patient of, the idea of ' miracles ' properly understood. First, for the theologian. That there is no caprice in Nature, science has taught us. What we now have to learn is that there is no caprice in God, and that every question of miracles is a question of Him. As long as we think of miracles as 'exceptional events, ' as 'suspensions of the laws of Nature, ' we are very near to paganism and superstition. To make miracles rationally credible--credible out of the reason, that is, not merely out of inference from former experience--we must believe that they are as natural (using the word 'Nature' in that more comprehensive sense in which it means not the order of the physical, merely, but the divine order of things in its entirety) as the phenomena of Nature, in the narrower sense of the word. So thought of, the miraculous comes to be regarded as a sign and result of a divine entrance, fuller than any that has been heretofore experienced. Against the miraculous, so thought of, there can be no prejudice: its reality is simply a question of fact: of the divine modes of operation under conditions of which we have had no former experience, we cannot judge. And next, for the man of science. That there have been accessions of the Divine--changes not accounted for by the contents of the things changed or of their environment--in the history of things, everyone who does not deny the Divine altogether, or who has not lost his head over 'potentially present' and 'promise and potency' notions, would admit; and that these accessions have, sometimes at least, resulted in surprises in.

Book And Then the End Will Come

Download or read book And Then the End Will Come written by Michael B. Casteel and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2014-09-05 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most vexing questions faced by Christian theologians for nearly two thousand years is that of grace versus works in the attainment of salvation. The apostle Paul, for example, is often believed to have focused on grace and downplayed the role of works, while the apostle James famously proclaimed that faith without works is dead (James 2:26). This book traces the evolution of the idea of salvation from its beginnings in the Old Testament, where the emphasis was on the protection and survival of the nation, through the end of the New Testament, where it came to be understood as the reward of eternal life for each believer. Presenting this development in a systematic way, the authors argue that the apparent contradiction in the biblical teachings on grace versus works is based on a failure to distinguish between the Kingdom of God and eternal life; in brief, the former requires works while the latter is purely the result of grace. This proposal has important implications for the Christian understanding of Gods justice and mercy and offers a hopeful message to believers everywhere.

Across these wide-ranging discussions, four friends keep coming back to the need for something—a catalyst—to transform human brokenness and answer our deepest longings. With Gennaro as our guide, these questions lead us to the Bible’s stories of Jesus and the possibilities that this might be the best Catalyst human knowledge and experience has yet found. “This book addresses the biggest ideas and our biggest human needs for healing, rescue and restoration. It is a unique and passionate contribution to the arguments for why we can and must take Jesus seriously in our world today.” — Nathan Brown, author, Why I Try to Believe: An Experiment in Life, Faith and Stubborn Hope

Book The God Human Level Hypothesis

Download or read book The God Human Level Hypothesis written by Sebastian Iyere and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-03-17 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE GOD-HUMAN LEVEL HYPOTHESIS, an illuminating book by IYERE Sebastian, attempts to share a simple and uncomplicated understanding of the Bible and life in general, using a simple model. The book presents the human being living simultaneously in two worlds (seen and unseen), with consciousness trapped in this seen world. It explains that there is something out there that controls us all from the unseen world. It submits that the five-dimensional human nature (HEART being thread-like (Ecc.12:6) connecting the SPIRIT and the SOUL; SOUL attached to the FLESH with another thread-like MIGHT) is disconnected and disjointed. Whereas a full understanding will be gained at the end of time or after death (when consciousness is liberated), there is a need today to consider reconnecting to God and recombining the five-dimensions. The connector or plug is Jesus Christ. This literary piece reinforces the authenticity and infallibility of Gods word. A coalescence of science, geography and history. While poignantly projecting the Sovereignty of God, the book depicts as sheer insanity, any attempt for anyone to think he/she is in control of anything in this world. The book touches every aspect of life (physical, spiritual, psychological, emotional, and so forth) in a microscopic dimension.

Book Christianity in the Light of Science

Download or read book Christianity in the Light of Science written by John W. Loftus and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 453 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology of new critical essays written by experts in their fields, in honor of the late Victor Stenger, examines Christianity using established scientific criteria. Where science specifically touches upon the claims of Christianity the authors seek to show those claims lack the required evidence. The result is that Christianity is not a sufficiently evidenced religion. In his New York Times bestseller, God: The Failed Hypothesis, physicist Victor Stenger argued that claims of religion should be subject to the same standards of scientific rigor as any other truth claim. Taking this approach, the contributors argue that Christianity fails every known scientific test for truth. Stenger himself wrote a chapter for this volume before he died. In it he presents a brief history of ideas about cosmology, showing that Christianity’s premodern understanding of the cosmos is incompatible with current scientific evidence regarding the origin and structure of the cosmos. Other contributors examine a wide variety of topics, including biblical archaeology, Intelligent Design, the Shroud of Turin, free will, the existence of the soul, the efficacy of petitionary prayer, and more. This challenging work is indispensable reading for both skeptical readers and open-minded people of faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER As seen on The Joe Rogan Experience! A groundbreaking dive into the role psychedelics have played in the origins of Western civilization, and the real-life quest for the Holy Grail that could shake the Church to its foundations. The most influential religious historian of the 20th century, Huston Smith, once referred to it as the "best-kept secret" in history. Did the Ancient Greeks use drugs to find God? And did the earliest Christians inherit the same, secret tradition? A profound knowledge of visionary plants, herbs and fungi passed from one generation to the next, ever since the Stone Age? There is zero archaeological evidence for the original Eucharist – the sacred wine said to guarantee life after death for those who drink the blood of Jesus. The Holy Grail and its miraculous contents have never been found. In the absence of any hard data, whatever happened at the Last Supper remains an article of faith for today’s 2.5 billion Christians. In an unprecedented search for answers, The Immortality Key examines the archaic roots of the ritual that is performed every Sunday for nearly one third of the planet. Religion and science converge to paint a radical picture of Christianity’s founding event. And after centuries of debate, to solve history’s greatest puzzle. Before the birth of Jesus, the Ancient Greeks found salvation in their own sacraments. Sacred beverages were routinely consumed as part of the so-called Ancient Mysteries – elaborate rites that led initiates to the brink of death. The best and brightest from Athens and Rome flocked to the spiritual capital of Eleusis, where a holy beer unleashed heavenly visions for two thousand years. Others drank the holy wine of Dionysus to become one with the god. In the 1970s, renegade scholars claimed this beer and wine – the original sacraments of Western civilization – were spiked with mind-altering drugs. In recent years, vindication for the disgraced theory has been quietly mounting in the laboratory. The constantly advancing fields of archaeobotany and archaeochemistry have hinted at the enduring use of hallucinogenic drinks in antiquity. And with a single dose of psilocybin, the psychopharmacologists at Johns Hopkins and NYU are now turning self-proclaimed atheists into instant believers. But the smoking gun remains elusive. If these sacraments survived for thousands of years in our remote prehistory, from the Stone Age to the Ancient Greeks, did they also survive into the age of Jesus? Was the Eucharist of the earliest Christians, in fact, a psychedelic Eucharist? With an unquenchable thirst for evidence, Muraresku takes the reader on his twelve-year global hunt for proof. He tours the ruins of Greece with its government archaeologists. He gains access to the hidden collections of the Louvre to show the continuity from pagan to Christian wine. He unravels the Ancient Greek of the New Testament with the world’s most controversial priest. He spelunks into the catacombs under the streets of Rome to decipher the lost symbols of Christianity’s oldest monuments. He breaches the secret archives of the Vatican to unearth manuscripts never before translated into English. And with leads from the archaeological chemists at UPenn and MIT, he unveils the first scientific data for the ritual use of psychedelic drugs in classical antiquity. The Immortality Key reconstructs the suppressed history of women consecrating a forbidden, drugged Eucharist that was later banned by the Church Fathers. Women who were then targeted as witches during the Inquisition, when Europe’s sacred pharmacology largely disappeared. If the scientists of today have resurrected this technology, then Christianity is in crisis. Unless it returns to its roots. Featuring a Foreword by Graham Hancock, the NYT bestselling author of America Before.
