Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroines of the Mission Field: Biographical Sketches of Female Missionaries Who Have Laboured in Various Lands Among the Heathen A further argument for the necessity for such an agency, lies in the fact that Roman Catholicism largely employs the aid of women, even among the recently converted adherents of Protestant churches, and sets them to neutralise the work done by European mis sionaries, by winning over the women and children. This course was recently adopted in Madagascar. Catholic Sisters of Mercy caught hold of the mothers, wives, Sisters, and daughters of the Christian converts, and made much mischief. Their success was mainly due to the fact that the natives preferred to have female teachers for their wives and daughters; and while the missionaries' Wives did all they could, they could not cope with the full need which prevailed. But the London Missionary Society resolved to fight the foe with their own weapons, and appointed Miss Bliss to labour in the capital, dealing especially, of course, with the women and girls. And this instance is only one out of many that could be quoted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Lady Missionaries Foreign Lands Classic Reprint written by Mrs. E. R. Pitman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lady Missionaries Foreign Lands It is only in Christian lands that women occupy their proper place. In all other countries they are drudges, slaves, or victims but equals or companions, never! Christianity in a large measure revokes the curse which the Fall imposed on women and Christ made the sexes more equal by coming as a man, and being born of a woman. He not only raised the standard of our common humanity by wearing our human nature, but He took the bitterness out of the woman's lot by honouring and adopting motherhood. From that time, all motherhood became brighter and holier, and all womanhood grander yet tenderer. The knowledge of Christ as a Saviour comes to the female heathen with new beauty, because of their saddened and depressed condition, and this knowledge is eagerly welcomed by them as good news. But they were debarred from these glad tidings, until Christian ladies made them known, and by so doing, caused such joy to enter Syrian hut, Mohammedan harem, and Indian zenana, as never beamed there before. The spreading of these tidings, in one way or another, forms woman's peculiar mission to the heathen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Women in the Mission Field: Glimpses of Christian Women Among the Heathen The first place on the roll of these elect women belongs to Mary Moffat. She has a double claim to honour as the wife of Robert Mofl'at and the mother of Mrs. Livingstone. Her father, James Smith, was a native of Perthshire, who had crossed the Border and married Mary Gray, of York, in 1792. He was a Nonconformist; his wife belonged to the Church of England. Both were earnest Christians. Mary Smith, their only daughter, was born in 1795 at New Windsor, which now forms part of Salford. A few months later the Scotchman whose name and work she was after wards to share was born at Ormiston, in East Lothian. She was sent to the Moravian School at Fairfield, where the girl's strong sense of devotion to Christ was fostered by precept and example.
