Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Fellowship in Thought and Prayer This book on Fellowship is of such high value that I trust it will be widely read by clergy and laity. It is not a book which can be mastered at a single reading; it demands study. It is as fine a bit of practical mysticism as has come to my attention for some years. The fellowship which it advocates is not of an easy-going sort. It requires a hallowing of the whole nature. The beauty of it is that there is no mission however humble, no parish however struggling that cannot find in this beautifully Christian program new inspiration and power. These are days for promoting and developing unities. This little book is an aid to that end. There is just one feature of fellowship not dwelt upon in the book to which in conclusion I should like to allude. Book The Sunday School Prayer Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Sunday School Prayer Book Classic Reprint written by J. Treadwell Walden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-27 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sunday School Prayer Book The writer offers the present work as an attempt more to suggest than to realize the above ideal. It is based upon a work prepared nearly three years ago for his own Sunday school, and which has been in successful use ever since. But sensible 0f the many imperfections in its first form he has long contemplated the issue of this edition. In its preparation, besides availing himself of the suggestions made by its prac tical working under his own observation, he was able also to ascertain the mind and necessity of the Church at large by dispersing hundreds of copies over the country, sending them to bishops, clergy, and superintendents known to be interested and experienced in the Sunday-school work, and requesting the most free and candid criticism. The application was met in the spirit that it was made, and he would gratefully acknowledge the obligation under which he has been placed by eminent authorities from all quarters. The suggestions of chief value were those relating to the construction of the de votional forms according to liturgical rules, and sometimes to the niceties of doctrinal statement, without which no real re semblance to the prayer-book could be attained. For this his obligation is so great that he cannot forbear to mention the names of Bishops Williams, Whittingham, Alfred Lee, Alonzo Potter, Bowman, and Burgess, and the Reverend Drs. Coxe, Howe, F. D. Huntington, and Muhlenberg. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Thoughts on Prayer Classic Reprint

Download or read book Thoughts on Prayer Classic Reprint written by Thomas K. Conrad and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts on Prayer Never did men need to offer the disciples' prayer, Lord, increase our faith, with more earnest and passionate sincerity. The average sentiment, or what is familiarly called the spirit of the age, no longer holds to fundamental doctrines with any firm or nervous grasp. The peril is no longer external to the Church. Even there, the Sphere of reason encroaches constantly on that of faith. Men are growing impatient of dogmatic truth. Doctrines must prove their right to be believed, and the progress of destructive criticism threatens to obscure almost every single truth which the Church has held from the beginning. Book The Practice of Prayer Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Practice of Prayer Classic Reprint written by G. Campbell Morgan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: G Campbell Morgan wrote the Practice of Prayer not just to recommend prayer, but a full biblical underpinning to a habit of prayer and an acknowledgement of the Christian doctrine of the omniscient and omnipotent God. In his life-long distinguished career of biblical study Morgan was particularly struck by the passage where the disciples beseech Jesus, 'Lord, teach us to pray'. Reverend Morgan was both insistent that the modern church consider the necessity of wholehearted, faithful prayer and the most appropriate way to achieve it. He believed that the answers were furnished to the faithful by God but that the development of faith, the knowledge of how to pray and even more importantly the appropriate attitude for worship were crucial to righteous worship. In this work he explains his concept of the correct method. Morgan examines each element of the trinity thoughtfully and explains in clear and poetic language the role that each element of the trinity plays in enabling the ideal practice of prayer. He identifies a tantalising human emotionality in Christ, the capacity for mercy in God and the inspiration for prayer that he attributes to the Holy Spirit. He refuses bars to prayer and urges those who would receive the full benefit of prayer to eschew activities that would block them from periods of theological reflection in favour of a more reflective approach to faith. As as prominent teacher, theologian and minister Reverend Morgan's arguments about the ideal approach to the practice and theory of prayer reflect his experience and education, as well as an emotional and moving account of spiritual closeness to God that he felt through prayer. For those seeking to expand the meditative element of their worship this book will linger on in the mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thoughts on Public Prayer Unless I mistake, I have Observed, from time to time, facts in regard to public prayer which satisfied me that there was a call for special counsel on the subject. It has even occurred to me to doubt whe ther the well-known doctrine of our beloved Church, With regard to Liturgies, may not have been so rigidly interpreted, and so unskilfully applied, as to lead to practical misapprehension and mischief in regard to the devotional part Of the service of our sanctuaries. Praise for Life Without Lack: "Dallas Willard helps us to understand that the Twenty-Third Psalm is not meant as a nice sentiment or for kitschy decor, it is for the very thick of our lives, the very moment of crisis. Imagine what our personal lives, families, communities, and politics would look like if we rejected the frantic striving of our day, and instead embraced the life without lack offered to us in Jesus Christ.
