Book The Christian Cross in American Public Life

Download or read book The Christian Cross in American Public Life written by John R. Vile and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2024-01-23 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cross is one of Christianity’s most distinctive symbols, increasingly cutting across Catholic/Protestant and other denominational divides. Although the US acknowledges no official religion, a variety of both Christian and non-Christian denominations have flourished. Crosses dot the landscape, sometimes towering over it and at other times simply marking a grave or the site of a traffic accident, or providing a place for contemplation. Courts continue to decide whether it is better to remove long-standing crosses on public property to protect the separation of church and state, or whether removing such symbols might be misinterpreted as expressing hostility towards religion. Whether marking identity, triumph, love, grief, or sacrifice, the cross remains important in American life and continues to be the subject of works of art, music, literature, and political, religious, and social rhetoric, all of which this volume addresses in an accessible A-to-Z format.

Download or read book Christotainment written by Shirley R. Steinberg,Joe L. and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than two thousand years Christian expansion and proselytizing was couched in terms of 'defending the faith'. Until recently in the United States, much of that defense came in the form of reactions against the 'liberal' influences channeled through big-corporate media such as popular music, Hollywood movies, and network and cable television. But the election of Ronald Reagan as a Hollywood President introduced Christian America to the tools of advertising and multimedia appeals to children and youth to win new believers to God's armies. Christotainment examines how Christian fundamentalism has realigned its armies to combat threats against it by employing the forces it once considered its chief enemies: the entertainment media, including movies, television, music, cartoons, theme parks, video games, and books. Invited contributors discuss the critical theoretical frameworks of top-selling devices within Christian pop culture and the appeal to masses of American souls through the blessed marriage of corporatism and the quest for pleasure.

Book Maya Christian Murals of Early Modern Yucat n

Download or read book Maya Christian Murals of Early Modern Yucat n written by Amara Solari and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This multidisciplinary project studies religious murals that were painted by Christianized Maya artists in the first centuries after the conquest of Mexico. Solari and Williams study the paintings, all of which are based in the Yucatán Peninsula, from an art history perspective, along with the printed sources referencing the murals. At the same time, they examine the chemical signatures left by the murals' pigments and the techniques used in their production through state-of-the-art imaging technologies. By using these methodologies, the authors seek to explain the many ways in which cultural and material exchange took place between the Spanish and Maya peoples. At first glance, murals depicting Spanish ideals of Western Christianity would appear to be an obvious and frequent tool of oppression in the Yucatán, as they were elsewhere in the Americas, but they were also a form of agency for Indigenous people as a means to shape these narratives with their own subtle imagery and ideas drawn from Mayan cosmologies and cultural traditions. These painters used European pictorial techniques, such as perspective, while also using local materials to create vivid pigments and colors never before seen in murals in Europe. The authors seek to trace how the initial and continued use of these material sources to create these images led to a much more localized form of Catholicism that continues to be practiced by Mayan speakers today"--
