Book Education and Development in India

Download or read book Education and Development in India written by Jandhyala B.G. Tilak and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-09-15 with total page 646 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on empirical, interdisciplinary research, this book presents a critical review of some of the major issues that are of interest to researchers, policymakers and planners in developing as well as advanced countries, including specifically in India. It provides an in-depth review of some of the major development policy issues in education in general, and in India in particular, over the past 2-3 decades. Besides presenting an overview of the educational developments in India that reflects issues such as growth, equity, efficiency, foreign aid, decentralization, center-state relations, financing, and cost recovery, the book puts forward in-depth analyses of education poverty, interrelations between education and poverty, low level of outcomes in elementary education, effects of structural adjustment policies and approaches on education, south-south cooperation, etc. It also critically discusses changes in policies relating to financing higher education, external assistance for education, and how the growth of private higher education is affecting society at large. The dichotomy between public policy and action is also highlighted in many chapters. On the whole, while the importance of education is being increasingly recognized, the state does not seem to be as willing to foot the bill for education as the households and even the private sector. Occasionally contrasting with international evidence on, for example, financing higher education, private higher education, or the effects of neo-liberal policies, the book offers an interesting read for a wider audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the socio-economic factors in the rise and development of nationalism in the Tamil-speaking region of the Madras Presidency in India between 1858 and 1918. It analyses the dynamic interaction between socio-economic conditions and nationalism in Tamil Nadu by applying both historical methods of documentary analysis and a sociological perspective. The volume looks at the advent of Western education and the role of Christian missionaries, the growth of the local press, socio-religious reform movements, decline of indigenous industries and the land revenue policies of the colonial government to arrive at a comprehensive portrait of the rise of nationalism in the Madras Presidency. The volume is invaluable for scholars of colonial history and the Indian freedom movement in southern India.

Book Routledge Handbook of Contemporary India

Download or read book Routledge Handbook of Contemporary India written by Knut A. Jacobsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 523 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A second, revised edition of this title is available at https://www.routledge.com/Routledge-Handbook-of-Contemporary-India/Jacobsen/p/book/9781032244068 India is the second largest country in the world with regard to population, the world’s largest democracy and by far the largest country in South Asia, and one of the most diverse and pluralistic nations in the world in terms of official languages, cultures, religions and social identities. Indians have for centuries exchanged ideas with other cultures globally and some traditions have been transformed in those transnational and transcultural encounters and become successful innovations with an extraordinary global popularity. India is an emerging global power in terms of economy, but in spite of India’s impressive economic growth over the last decades, some of the most serious problems of Indian society such as poverty, repression of women, inequality both in terms of living conditions and of opportunities such as access to education, employment, and the economic resources of the state persist and do not seem to go away. This Handbook contains chapters by the field’s foremost scholars dealing with fundamental issues in India’s current cultural and social transformation and concentrates on India as it emerged after the economic reforms and the new economic policy of the 1980s and 1990s and as it develops in the twenty-first century. Following an introduction by the editor, the book is divided into five parts: Part I: Foundation Part II: India and the world Part III: Society, class, caste and gender Part IV: Religion and diversity Part V: Cultural change and innovations Exploring the cultural changes and innovations relating a number of contexts in contemporary India, this Handbook is essential reading for students and scholars interested in Indian and South Asian culture, politics and society. Chapter 11 of this book is freely available as a downloadable Open Access PDF at http://www.taylorfrancis.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC-BY-NC-ND) 4.0 license.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays is concerned with the Catholic Church’s understanding of the nature of human flourishing and the processes of education that flow from it. Each essay seeks, in its own way, to explore, illustrate and provide insights into the application of Catholic education policy and practice in differing socio/legislative circumstances. The book is divided into three main sections. The first explores Catholic teaching on education, its ethical basis and the Christo-centred nature of Catholic school leadership. The second considers some of the structural characteristics of Catholic educational systems in England, the United States of America and Jordan. The third section illustrates, in a series of case studies, how the universal precepts underpinning Catholic education are implemented in a variety of national and international contexts.

Download or read book Leave the Temple written by Felix Wilfred and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can India--a land of intense poverty as well as unparalled spirituality--be liberated? Where do the sources for its liberation lie? Leave the Temple brings together writings that weigh the practical and theoretical problems of hermeneutic pre-understandings of the socio-political situation in South Asia. Is the challenge of social transformation and human liberation one in which people must leave the temple to embrace the freeing insights of secularization? Or does leaving the temple--to find God in the world of suffering humanity--provide a richness and empowerment that secular models of the human future cannot replace? Contributors include Walter Fernandes, on a socio-historical perspective for liberation theology in India and on bhakti; Yvon Ambroise on oppression and liberation in Indian society; Ignatius Puthiadam on trends in Hindu thought; T. K. John on liberation theology and Gandhian praxis; George M. Soares-Prabhu on the liberative pedagogy of Jesus; Xavier Irudayaraj on interiority and liberation; Samuel Rayan on caste; Sebastian Kappen on social crisis and liberation; Michael Amaladoss on liberation as an interreligious project; and Felix Wilfred on the Catholic Church's participation in the liberation of India.
