Book Christian Beliefs Reconsidered in the Light of Modern Thought Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Beliefs Reconsidered in the Light of Modern Thought In reconsidering certain Christian Beliefs, I have not attempted to discuss several of paramount interest and importance; such as the existence of God, the Doctrine of the Holy Trinity, of Immortality, &c.; but only such with which the so-called "Scheme of Redemption" is mainly concerned. It might be at once observed that a future life is intimately connected with the Redemption of Mankind; but the reader will find that I adopt the view that a future life is comparatively seldom alluded to in the New Testament, and that the Salvation there spoken of affects a man here, and only by implication, hereafter. I would nevertheless add that I regard a future life, either in compensation or fulfilment, as a necessary part of our existence. I assume, as I fully believe in the existence of God the Father, who created the Universe by the methods of Evolution. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Restoration of Belief When these Tracts were projected it was intended that they should embrace the principal subjects that belong to the modern argument con cerning the truth of the Christian system; and I then believed that. I should be able to carry out my purpose at short and regular intervals. I have not found it possible to do this; and in fact many months have separated the Second of these publications from the Third; nor ought I now to believe that, at any time to which I could pledge myself, I shall be able to resume my task. Book The Grounds of Theistic and Christian Belief Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Grounds of Theistic and Christian Belief Classic Reprint written by George Park Fisher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-17 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Grounds of Theistic and Christian Belief I must expect, that, among the readers who may be interested in the general subject of this volume, some will be less attracted by the sections that are concerned with the philosophical objections to theism, or with the critical evi dence in behalf of the genuineness of the Gospels. But even this class, I trust, will find the major part of the book not altogether ill-suited to their wants. I venture to ih dulge the hope, that they may derive from it some aid in clearing up perplexities, and some new light upon the nature of the Christian faith and its relation to the Scriptures. Book The Doctrine of the Ages Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Doctrine of the Ages Classic Reprint written by Robert Cameron and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-25 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Doctrine of the Ages The substance of this book, in all of its essen tial features, was carefully read by the late Dr. A. J. Gordon, in manuscript. He urged its immediate publication, and consented to write an introduction to its pages. Before the closing chapters were completed he had passed away from his useful life. On this account his name has no connection with the book, further than this grateful acknowledgment of his encouraging words. The learned Dr. Harnack, in his History of Dogma, when speaking of the Christian's faith in God as the father of Jesus Christ, makes the following comprehensive statement: So far as this God is believed to be the omnipotent Lord of heaven and earth, the Christian religion includes a knowledge of God, of the world, and of the purpose of created things. These three spheres, then, are the proper objects of our contemplation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Christian Doctrine of Reconciliation Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Christian Doctrine of Reconciliation Classic Reprint written by James Denney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Reconciliation Reconciliation is a term of wide scope and various applica tion, and it is hardly possible to conceive a life or a religion which should dispense with it. There is always some kind Of strain or tension between man and his environment, and man has always an interest in overcoming the strain, in re solving the discord in his situation into a harmony, in getting the environment to be his ally rather than his adversary. The process by which his end is attained may be described 'as one of reconciliation, but whether the reconciliation is adequate depends on whether his conception Of the environ ment is equal to the truth. Men may be very dimly and imperfectly conscious of the nature Of the strain which dis quiets their life, and may seek to Overcome it in blind and insufficient ways. They may interpret it as physical in its origin when it is really ethical, or as the misapprehension of a moral order when it is really antagonism to a personal God, and in either case the reconciliation they seek will fail to give the peace of which they are in quest. Nevertheless, reconciliation and nothing else is what they want, and its place in religion is central and vital. Book Varieties of Religion Today

Download or read book Varieties of Religion Today written by Charles Taylor and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2003-11-30 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hundred years after William James delivered the celebrated lectures that became The Varieties of Religious Experience, one of the foremost thinkers in the English-speaking world returns to the questions posed in James's masterpiece to clarify the circumstances and conditions of religion in our day. An elegant mix of the philosophy and sociology of religion, Charles Taylor's powerful book maintains a clear perspective on James's work in its historical and cultural contexts, while casting a new and revealing light upon the present. Lucid, readable, and dense with ideas that promise to transform current debates about religion and secularism, Varieties of Religion Today is much more than a revisiting of James's classic. Rather, it places James's analysis of religious experience and the dilemmas of doubt and belief in an unfamiliar but illuminating context, namely the social horizon in which questions of religion come to be presented to individuals in the first place. Taylor begins with questions about the way in which James conceives his subject, and shows how these questions arise out of different ways of understanding religion that confronted one another in James's time and continue to do so today. Evaluating James's treatment of the ethics of belief, he goes on to develop an innovative and provocative reading of the public and cultural conditions in which questions of belief or unbelief are perceived to be individual questions. What emerges is a remarkable and penetrating view of the relation between religion and social order and, ultimately, of what "religion" means.

Book Christianity and the New Age Classic Reprint

Download or read book Christianity and the New Age Classic Reprint written by George Preston Mains and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and the New Age While I could covet for this book a wide welcome, an interdenominational welcome, from both the ministry and the laity, in its preparation I have had not less in mind the lay than the ministerial reader. I have been led, sanely and constructively I hope, to discuss many phases of modem fact and thought, and in my various processes I think it could be only helpful if a large constituency of thinking laymen were to keep me company. I do not for a moment assume that all such readers would give consent to all the positions of the book, but it is my confidence that all would receive some benefit; and it might not be of least value that the attention of readers should be newly challenged at the very points, if any, which seem to awaken dissent. The theme of this volume is - the Church? Yes; but something far other and more. The central thought around which the entire discussion revolves is - the world-kingdom of Jesus Christ. I have elected for the title of the book, as covering perhaps its conception more perfectly than any other phrasing, this - Christianity and the New Age. This title is exceedingly broad - indeed, "broader than the measure of man's mind." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
