Book The Early Days of Christianity Vol 1 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Days of Christianity, Vol. 1 I complete in these volumes the work which has absorbed such leisure as could be spared from many and onerous duties during the last twelve years. My object has been to furnish English readers with a companion, partly historic and partly expository, to the whole of the New Testament. By attention to the minutest details of the original, by availing myself to the best of my power of the results of modern criticism, by trying to concentrate upon the writings of the Apostles and Evangelists such light as may be derived from Jewish, Pagan, or Christian sources, I have endeavoured to fulfil my ordination vow and to show diligence in such studies as help to the knowledge of the Holy Scriptures. The Life of Christ was intended mainly as a commentary upon the Gospels. It was written in such a form as should reproduce whatever I had been able to learn from the close examination of every word which they contain, and should at the same time set forth the living reality of the scenes recorded. In the Life of St. Paul I wished to incorporate the details of the Acts of the Apostles with such biographical incidents as can be derived from the Epistles of St. Paul; and to take. Download or read book Christian Philosophy Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Ephraim Langdon Frothingham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Philosophy, Vol. 1 Christian philosophy is necessarily founded upon conceptions of the nature of God, of the origin and nature of the universe, and of the relation of God to the universe and to man. In our time, the greatest con fusion exists, even within the precincts of the Christian chui ch, with regard to these fundamental ideas and conceptions which contradict each other are recognized, either from an external eclecticism, or from an internal inversion by the Destructive Reason with the view to confound opposite ideas in the interest of a nihilistic or of a pantheistic philosophy. This perversion and inver Sion of Christian thought are produced by transcendental philosophy (german in origin) and by evolutionary sci ence (english in origin), which work together to establish in the Church an Antichristian, materialistic, and panthe istic philosophy. There is, in our century, and extending to all departments of intelligence, a renaissance of Pagan thought quite analogous to that effected in the fifteenth century and onward, and our period, equally with that, calls for a new birth or regeneration of Christian thought from a more universal insight into the fundamental ideas of Christianity. From 'the very need of it, therefore, we may look for a new dogmatic form of Christian theology that shall iflcorporate the fundamental and primitive ideas of Christianity, as an historical institution, in forms of imaginative thought which Shall correspond to that more internal condition of the Reason and of the Re. Book The Life of Jesus the Christ Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Jesus the Christ Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Henry Ward Beecher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Jesus the Christ, Vol. 1 The Lives of Christ which have appeared of late years have naturally partaken largely of the dialectic and critical spirit. They have either attacked or defended. The Gospel, like a city of four gates, has been taken and retaken by alternate parties, or held in part by Opposing hosts, while on every side the marks of siege and defence cover the ground. This may be unfortunate, but it is necessary. As long as great learning and acute criticism are brought to assail the text of the Gos pels, their historic authenticity, the truth of their contents, and the ethical nature of their teachings, so long must great learn ing and sound philosophy be brought to the defence of those precious documents. Download or read book Manifold Witness for Christ Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Alfred Barry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manifold Witness for Christ, Vol. 1 It is certain, as a matter of fact, that the Christianity of the mass of men is received by inheritance and teaching, and tested first by practical experience, and then by simple study of the Gospel in itself. I contend not only that this is perfectly reasonable, but that by no other method could Christianity, in accordance with the laws of human nature and experience, hope to assert for itself anything like a universal sway. But when this natural process is chal lenged to justify itself by reason, it appears to me that Christian thought generally passes through the two phases which I have attempted to Sketch in the first and second parts of this volume. I. Christianity obviously presents herself as the chief re presentative of Supernatural Religion', probably the only representative who has any chance of a hearing. The first question which suggests itself to most men on hearing her claim, is the question of the relation in which the Gospel stands to the conclusions and doubts of Natural Religion.' Can it do anything to strengthen the one, and to dispel the other In answer to that question I have endeavoured to Show that here, as in all other cases, the Supernatural is not Preternatural.' Tracing the gradual development in the Bible of the full Christian doctrine, under the pervading idea of Covenant with God, ' I have contended that, in relation to the three fundamental points of religion, the personality of God, the Spirituality of man, and the solution of the mystery of evil, Christianity accords at all points with the main principles of Natural Religion; but at the same time confirms in the calmness of absolute certitude the modest inductions of Natural Theology, and supplements them, when they are silent or speak with stammering tongue. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life and Words of Christ, Vol. 1 To write the story of such a Life is no easy task, but it is one beyond all others important for the best interests of the age. It is impossible to describe the infinite dignity of His person; but His words and acts are His legacy to us, which it is vital to study and apply. I have tried in this book to restore, as far as I could, the world in which Jesus moved; the country in which He lived; the people among whom He grew up and ministered; the religion in which He was trained the Temple services in which He took part; the ecclesiastical, civil, and social aspects of His time; the parties of the day, their Opinions and their spirit; the customs that ruled; the influences that prevailed the events, social, religious, and political, not mentioned in the Gospels, that formed the history of His lifetime, so far as they can be recovered. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginnings of Christianity, Vol. 1: The Rise of the Religion St Paul was a trained theologian, the writer of the Apocalypse was a layman, and this volume closes with an analysis and estimate of that remarkable work. It is the oldest and only document springing out of lay Christian enthusiasm, and Professor Wernle thinks that it represents the general lay opinion of the Church in primitive Christian times. At the bottom of this enthusiasm lay the belief that the world was rapidly coming to an end. And that the supreme duty of man was to seek salvation from the coming judgment by watchfulness and repentance. Men in such a condition of mind had no thought of setting up stable ecclesiastical forms and institutions. But these men had a new life in them - a life of. Book Early Christian Doctrine Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Early Christian Doctrine Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Rev Leighton Pullan and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-09 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Christian Doctrine, Vol. 1 This book contains a sketch pf Christian doctrine from the earliest times until the Council of Chalcedon in A.D. 451. By that date the faith of the Church in Jesus Christ was expressed with such clearness that any serious misunderstanding on the subject of His Incarnation was rendered difficult. Some account is also given of the doctrines of the Trinity the Atonement, and the Sacraments, which are so intimately connected with the doctrine of the Incarnation. Brevity has made it necessary to omit many important references and quotations which the writer hopes to incorporate in a larger book on dogmatic theology. Book The Life of Christ Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Life of Christ Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Mgr; E. Le Camus and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Christ, Vol. 1 This is the sixth edition of this book. It has undergone some changes in form and has received some important additions. To ask the author the reason for thus retouching a work which the public has readily received with favour, would be like asking the artist, who always sees his ideal better than he can realise it, why, when every one is praising his work, he feels himself irresistibly moved to begin again, striving each day to throw more light on certain details, to make others more precise, to harmonise better all the outlines, until he has put into his picture or his statue all that he feels, all that he sees, all that he can. The author, indeed, is aware that in putting pen to paper to write a life of Our Lord, one must from the first give up all thought of attaining even the most relative perfection. For how can one flatter himself that he has enclosed in a frame worthy of it, as if it were simply that of some great man, the astounding physiognomy of the Master, which, suddenly, when we think to grasp it and set it firmly on our earthly horizon, assumes superhuman proportions, and, in the midst of infinite light, mounts up toward heaven, where it is lost in God? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginnings of Christianity The studies and discourses that are herein ofiered to the public deal with some general conditions of Christian life in the first three centuries of our era. Though already printed, at intervals and amid the pressure of grave academic duties, it is hoped that a certain unity of doctrine, purpose, and interest will not be found wanting to their collection as a series. In one way or another they illustrate certain phases and circumstances of those wonderful centuries before Constantine the Great, when the constitution and the institutions of the new religious society were de veloping on all sides within the vast Empire of Rome. The teachings of Jesus Christ were the pure, sweet leaven that permeated the decaying and unhappy society of antiquity, saved from its mass of corruption some germs of goodness and truth, of beauty and justice, and strengthened the State against those shocks that would otherwise have reduced it to pri maeval barbarism. A perennial charm must therefore attach to any narrative of the problems and vicissi tudes of this era. This is particularly true of the sufferings of the infant churches, and the social changes their rapid growth could not fail to work in the Roman society that seemed to contain them, but of which.
