Focusing on several set phrases that have been taken as evidence that Paul either did or did not use "christos" in its conventional sense, Novenson concludes that the question cannot be settled at the level of formal grammar. Examining nine passages in which Paul comments on how he means the word "christos", Novenson shows that they do all that we normally expect any text to do to count as a messiah text.

Meanwhile, interpreters of Paul, faced with his several hundred uses of the Greek word for ''messiah,'' have concluded that christos in Paul does not bear its conventional sense. Against this curious consensus, Matthew V. Novenson argues in Christ among the Messiahs that all contemporary uses of such language, Paul's included, must be taken as evidence for its range of meaning. In other words, early Jewish messiah language is the kind of thing of which Paul's Christ language is an example. From the writings of the Jewish historian, Josephus, Judas the Galilean was the only Messiah figure who matched the mythical Jesus of Nazareth in word and deed. Judas the Galilean preached a nationalistic message which pitted his followers against Herod the Great and Rome. Judas cleansed the Temple, was involved in a Barabbas-style prisoner release and led a tax revolt. His exploits were absorbed into the story of Jesus, who also cleansed the Temple, was involved in the Barabbas prisoner release and was arrested for his refusal to pay taxes to Rome. To many Jews, Judas the Galilean was a failed Messiah. His followers, however, kept him relevant through the concept of bodily resurrection. They believed he would return and defeat the Romans. Paul accepted the resurrection but developed his own interpretation based upon personal revelations. His Messiah had nothing to do with Jewish politics but was a redeemer for all mankind. Paul's theology became the bridge between the historical Judas the Galilean and the mythical Jesus of Nazareth. With the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 CE, Paul's salvation theology soon replaced the Jewish nationalistic teachings of Judas. Within decades, Josephus' historical Judas the Galilean was replaced with the Gospels' Jesus of Nazareth.

Book excerpt: For most of church history, the Catholic dogma of the Trinity has supplanted the original Jewish understanding of God’s incarnation in the Messiah that was taught in the New Testament Scriptures. But the Jews were never trinitarian in their understanding of Yahweh’s self-revelation. So, why is the evangelical Christian church described as trinitarian in her orthodoxy? The forgotten reality is that the Messiah Jesus and his apostles were Jewish and would have understood the nature of God exactly as Moses and the prophets had. They knew Yahweh as a single person Deity. Therefore, whenever Jesus or the apostles would speak of God or his Spirit, they would never deviate from that Mosaic understanding. And so, when we read of the gospel being presented to the Gentiles in the book of Acts, there is no introduction or controversy about the idea of the Trinity at all. This book will argue for the pure scriptural revelation of the Christology that the Jewish apostles proclaimed and defended, and will provide a definitive refutation of the Catholic fiction by appealing to the verbalized convictions and assertions of Moses and the prophets, the Lord Jesus Christ, and the Jewish apostles, which cannot sustain the Trinity.
