Book Chris Hani

Download or read book Chris Hani written by Hugh Macmillan and published by Ohio University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-15 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography shows how Black political leader Chris Hani’s life and death were pivotal to ending apartheid and to establishing a democratic government in South Africa. Chris Hani is one of the most iconic figures in South Africa’s history, as a leader within the African National Congress (ANC) and as chief of staff of uMkhonto we Sizwe, the armed wing of the ANC. His assassination in 1993 by a far-right militant threatened negotiations to end apartheid and install a democratic government. Serious tensions followed the assassination, leading Nelson Mandela to address the nation in an effort to avert further violence: Tonight I am reaching out to every single South African, black and white, from the very depths of my being. A white man, full of prejudice and hate, came to our country and committed a deed so foul that our whole nation now teeters on the brink of disaster. A white woman, of Afrikaner origin, risked her life so that we may know, and bring to justice, this assassin. The cold-blooded murder of Chris Hani has sent shock waves throughout the country and the world... Now is the time for all South Africans to stand together against those who, from any quarter, wish to destroy what Chris Hani gave his life for: the freedom of all of us. Hugh Macmillan’s concise biography details Hani’s important role in shaping twentieth-century South African history.

Having found her soul mate, a Canadian journalist called Matt, Rosie uproots from England to Johannesburg. Optimistic and independent, she is rapidly jolted from the tranquil English countryside into bustling Soweto. Apartheid is crumbling. Mr Nelson Mandela has been released from prison and whites are about to decide whether to give black South Africans the vote. In a battered red VW Beatle, Rosie’s journey continues as she explores Soweto, one of the most dangerous places on earth. She befriends a group of resilient black women, a bereft sangoma (medicine woman) and tsostis (car-jackers) and even bumps into Winnie’s body guard. But then her life takes a sinister turn: her car is stolen, a child is murdered and her neighbour shot and she becomes seriously ill. Matt is out of the country. What is to become of her?

Book excerpt: As the most influential and powerful country on the entire continent of Africa, an understanding of South Africa’s past and its present trends is crucial in appreciating where South Africans are going to, and from where they have come. There were also serious problems in governance, in public health, and the economy, but with a remarkable popular resilience too. This third edition of Historical Dictionary of South Africa contains a chronology, an introduction, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has more than 600 cross-referenced entries on important personalities as well as aspects of the country’s politics, economy, foreign relations, religion, and culture. Book excerpt: (Narrated by Professor A Marula – An Old Tree) Dedicated to all of those who have roots in South Africa. Professor Marula’s story: “From my hilltop I have looked down on the living history of South Africa. From my early days understanding the rules of the Southern African plains I realized just how much I loved the country and its peoples. We lived in a magnificent world – each species knowing their role in the circle of life in Africa. As I aged and became a professor I enjoyed meeting the leaders of the species and discussing the changes that were taking place in South Africa. I prepared lessons on the changing landscape in South Africa and I am privileged to share these with you in the book. I do so love the country and even if I say so myself I am a student of nature, of politics and of human development. Over the years I have stored vast amounts of documents in my trunks – interviews with political figures and tribal leaders. In my latter years I enjoyed meeting with both black and white leaders in South Africa. Sharing our thoughts on the developments in the country made me feel as if I was given the status of an elder statesman. My story covers what I have seen from my hilltop over a span of approximately 500 years – a very long time. The development and sustainability of the country rests with the youth and the leaders of tomorrow. My story gives hope that the ‘tomorrow’ will include a place for everyone in a dynamic, honest, healthy and vibrant country. I do hope that you enjoy my story. Please feel free to contact me at my email address. Kind regards, Professor A Marula, (Sclerocarya birrea)

  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2022-04-06
  • ISBN : 1000555097
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book South Africa written by Nancy L. Clark and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-04-06 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of South Africa examines the history of South Africa from 1948 to the present, covering the economic background to racial segregation, the introduction of the oppressive policy of apartheid, the eventual collapse of White supremacy, and the legacy of apartheid to the present day. Fully revised, the fourth edition incorporates new original research, particularly from the records of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, and includes additional popular culture images, such as posters linked to the international anti-apartheid struggle. These help to further emphasise the mounting popular opposition to state repression in the 1970s and 1980s. By developing an analysis of recent economic and political issues that are rooted in the apartheid regime, particularly the continuing divide between rich and poor along racial lines and the impact of public corruption known as 'state capture', South Africa provides a current, clear, and succinct introduction to the ideology and practice of apartheid. Illustrated with photographs, maps, and figures, and including a Chronology, Glossary, Who’s Who, and updated Further Reading section, the fourth edition of South Africa is an essential text for students studying all aspects of apartheid in South Africa.

This book provides an overview to South Africa's multiple millennia of history, covering its long and often troubled past to its current status in the 21st century. A newly revised and thoroughly updated version of a popular Greenwood publication, The History of South Africa: Second Edition provides readers with readable, accessible information on the nation's prehistory, early history and colonial past, its unfortunate apartheid era, as well as new coverage of South Africa's more recent events in the 20th and 21st centuries. This work presents unique, extended coverage of South Africa's prehistory, beginning 3.5 million years ago and incorporating information gleaned from the most recent archaeological finds. The text reflects the most current historiography on African settlement and life before the arrival of Europeans, accurately describes the colonial era as a period of European hegemony and intense African resistance, and discusses in great detail the apartheid years and the events leading up to majority rule in 1994. This second edition also includes an updated timeline, new biographical sketches of notable people, and supplies recent print and electronic resources in the bibliography.
