Book A Year of Vincentian Preaching by Daniel Harris CM

Download or read book A Year of Vincentian Preaching by Daniel Harris CM written by Gregory Heille and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-11-03 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Daniel Harris—a Vincentian of the Congregation of the Mission Western Province—taught preaching for the forty-two years of his priestly ministry at seminaries in Illinois, Missouri, Colorado, and California. Nearly every Sunday, Dan also preached in nearby parishes—and he preached amazingly. With a transparent love for the Eucharist and a keen sense of the biblical texts for each liturgical season, Dan nourished fortunate congregations with wit and insight into the Christian life as we live it today in our families and neighborhoods. Dan inspired seminary students and congregational listeners to understand, celebrate, and live their Christian lives with apostolic devotion. A Year of Vincentian Preaching collects thirty-nine homilies preached by Dan in St. Louis according to the seasons of the liturgical year. These homilies are beautifully crafted and worthy of reflective reading and prayer by listeners and preachers. A Year of Vincentian Preaching remembers a remarkable preacher and teacher of preachers to his listeners, students, confreres, and colleagues. It also offers a corpus of high-quality homilies for study by new and seasoned preachers seeking to hone their craft in biblical preaching and preaching the just word.

Book Priesthood Through the Scriptures

Download or read book Priesthood Through the Scriptures written by Clinton Matthews and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-10-07 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How does one obtain the wisdom to discern between the truth and that which is false? Can one look to the institutions of higher learning? Is the station and high achievements of some individuals a proper yardstick? By what measure is the validity and reliability of their work and words measured? Can one feel safe and secure in the established order of what has been generally accepted by the great majority? Truly, the last question one should ask is, Was God so naive as to leave mankind without the means to find out the truth in such a way as to preclude any chance of missing the mark?

Book If Sons Then Heirs

  • Author : Caroline Johnson Hodge

Download or read book If Sons Then Heirs written by Caroline Johnson Hodge and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2007-07-13 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Christianity is widely understood to be a "universal" religion that transcends the particularities of history and culture, including differences related to kinship and ethnicity. In traditional Pauline scholarship, this portrait of Christianity has been justified by the letters of Paul. Interpreters claim that Paul eliminates ethnicity, or at least separates it from what is important about Christianity. This study challenges that perception. Through a detailed examination of kinship and ethnic language in Paul's letters, Johnson Hodge argues that notions of peoplehood and lineage are not rejected or downplayed by Paul; instead they are central to his gospel. Paul's chief concern is the status of the gentile peoples who are alienated from the God of Israel. Ethnicity defines this theological problem, just as it shapes his own evangelizing of the ethnic and religious "other." According to Paul, God has responded to the gentile predicament through Christ. Johnson Hodge details how Paul uses the logic of patrilineal descent to construct a myth of origins for gentiles: through baptism into Christ the gentiles become descendants of Abraham, adopted sons of God and coheirs with Christ. Although Jews and gentiles now share a common ancestor, they are not collapsed into one group (of "Christians," for example). They are separate but related lineages of Abraham. Through comparisons with other ancient authors, Johnson Hodge shows that Paul is not alone in his strategic use of kinship and ethnic language. Because kinship and ethnicity present themselves as natural and fixed, yet are also open to negotiation and reworking, they are effective tools in organizing people and power, shaping self-understanding and defining membership. If Sons, Then Heirs demonstrates that Paul's thinking is immersed in the story of Israel. He speaks not as a Christian theologian, but as a first-century Jewish teacher of gentiles responding to concrete situations in these early communities of Christ-followers. As such Paul does not reject or critique Judaism, but responds to God's call to be a "light to the nations."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new kind of Bible study… After the success of her first two books, Heather Holleman received many requests to write a Bible study. And as a college English instructor, she wanted to make sure it really taught and didn’t simply inform. So she surveyed several women about what their dream study would look like, then got to work. The result is Included in Christ, a narrative-driven study where you can bring your life before Scripture in the context of community. Together women will discern their personal shadow narratives—ways they are living outside of their identity in Christ—and then rewrite those narratives according to biblical truth. This in-depth, 8-week study in Ephesians willequip women with six “signature stories” of God’s work in their lives—helping them combat exclusion, loneliness, weakness, decay, emptiness, and silence. Designed to facilitate honest sharing and help you internalize biblical truth, Included in Christ will provide community and connectedness as well as spiritual nourishment. It will also guide you in how to share your story and the hope of Christ with someone who doesn’t yet know Him.
