Book Mystic Chords of Memory

Download or read book Mystic Chords of Memory written by Michael Kammen and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2011-08-17 with total page 879 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mystic Chords of Memory "Illustrated with hundreds of well-chosen anecdotes and minute observations . . . Kammen is a demon researcher who seems to have mined his nuggets from the entire corpus of American cultural history . . . insightful and sardonic." —Washington Post Book World In this ground-breaking, panoramic work of American cultural history, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Machine That Would Go of Itself examines a central paradox of our national identity How did "the land of the future" acquire a past? And to what extent has our collective memory of that past—as embodied in our traditions—have been distorted, or even manufactured? Ranging from John Adams to Ronald Reagan, from the origins of Independence Day celebrations to the controversies surrounding the Vietnam War Memorial, from the Daughters of the American Revolution to immigrant associations, and filled with incisive analyses of such phenonema as Americana and its collectors, "historic" villages and Disneyland, Mystic Chords of Memory is a brilliant, immensely readable, and enormously important book. "Fascinating . . . a subtle and teeming narrative . . . masterly." —Time "This is a big, ambitious book, and Kammen pulls it off admirably. . . . [He] brings a prodigious mind and much scholarly rigor to his task . . . an importnat book—and a revealing look at how Americans look at themselves." —Milwaukee Journal

Book Chords of Freedom

Download or read book Chords of Freedom written by J. R. Oldfield and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How should Britons remember transatlantic slavery? How has slavery been remembered in the past? Chords of Freedom sets out to answer these questions and, in doing so, traces the way in which British transatlantic slavery has been absorbed into the nation's collective memory. It offers valuable new insights into the way in which a "culture of abolition" took root in Britain, and how views of transatlantic slavery and figures like William Wilberforce have been revised and amended to reflect the changing demands of a series of "present days". Its cross-disciplinary approach will appeal to a broad spectrum of specialists, as well as to undergraduates and postgraduates.

Book Centre and Periphery Roots and Exile

Download or read book Centre and Periphery Roots and Exile written by Friedemann Sallis and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2012-08-06 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the impact place and displacement can have on the composition and interpretation of Western art music, using as its primary objects of study the work of István Anhalt (1919–2012), György Kurtág (1926–), and Sándor Veress (1907–92). Although all three composers are of Hungarian origin, their careers followed radically different paths. Whereas, Kurtág remained in Budapest for most of his career, Anhalt and Veress left: the former in 1946 and immigrated to Canada and the latter in 1948 and settled in Switzerland. All three composers have had an extraordinary impact in the cultural environments within which their work took place. In the first section, “Place and Displacement,” contributors examine what happens when composers and their music migrate in the culturally complex world of the late twentieth century. The past one hundred years produced record numbers of refugees, and this fact is now beginning to resonate in the study of music. As Anhalt himself forcefully asserts, however, not all composers who emigrate should be understood as exiles. The first chapters of this book explore some of the problems and questions surrounding this issue. Essays in the second section, “Perspectives on Reception, Analysis, and Interpretation,” look at how performing acts of interpretation on music implies bringing the time, place, and identity of the musician, the analyst, and the teacher to bear on the object of study. Like Kodály, Kurtág considers his work to be “naturally” embedded in Hungarian culture, but he is also a quintessentially European artist. Much of his production—he is one of the twentieth century’s most prolific composers of vocal music—involves the setting of Hungarian texts, but in the late 1970s his cultural horizons expanded to include texts in Russian, German, French, English, and ancient Greek. The book explores how musicologists’ divergent cultural perspectives impinge on the interpretation of this work. The final section, “The Presence of the Past and Memory in Contemporary Music,” examines the impact time and memory can have on notions of place and identity in music. All living art taps into the personal and collective past in one way or another. The final four chapters look at various aspects of this relationship.

Book excerpt: First published in 1954, Thackeray is intended as a reminder that Thackeray is, after all, a great novelist. Professor Tillotson, admiring the novels as great literature, explores their common characteristics and those they share with the rest of Thackeray’s writings – for he sees Thackeray’s work as all of a piece. He is particularly interested in Thackeray’s methods of narration and in the philosophic commentary which forms a sort of trellis for almost everything he put out. He sees him mainly as a writer who, subtle as he is, address himself to readers honoured as ordinary human beings. In two appendices, Professor Tillotson deals with two particular modern opinions – that Thackeray spoiled his novels by an ‘infiltration’ into them of his own biography, and that he has no place in the great novel tradition. This book will be of interest to students of literature and history.
