Book excerpt: Chordal graphs play a central role in techniques for exploiting sparsity in large semidefinite optimization problems and in related convex optimization problems involving sparse positive semidefinite matrices. Chordal graph properties are also fundamental to several classical results in combinatorial optimization, linear algebra, statistics, signal processing, machine learning, and nonlinear optimization. This survey covers the theory and applications of chordal graphs, with an emphasis on algorithms developed in the literature on sparse Cholesky factorization. These algorithms are formulated as recursions on elimination trees, supernodal elimination trees, or clique trees associated with the graph. The best known example is the multifrontal Cholesky factorization algorithm, but similar algorithms can be formulated for a variety of related problems, including the computation of the partial inverse of a sparse positive definite matrix, positive semidefinite and Euclidean distance matrix completion problems, and the evaluation of gradients and Hessians of logarithmic barriers for cones of sparse positive semidefinite matrices and their dual cones. The purpose of the survey is to show how these techniques can be applied in algorithms for sparse semidefinite optimization, and to point out the connections with related topics outside semidefinite optimization, such as probabilistic networks, matrix completion problems, and partial separability in nonlinear optimization.

Semidefinite programming (SDP) is a generalization of linear programming (LP) in that the non-negativity constraints on the variables is replaced by a positive semidefinite constraint on matrix variables. Many of the elegant theoretical properties and powerful solution techniques follow through from LP to SDP. In particular, the primal-dual interior-point methods, which are currently so successful for LP, can be used to efficiently solve SDP problems. In addition to the theoretical and algorithmic questions, SDP has found many important applications in combinatorial optimization, control theory and other areas of mathematical programming. The papers in this volume cover a wide spectrum of recent developments in SDP. The volume would be suitable as a textbook for advanced courses in optimization. It is intended for graduate students and researchers in mathematics, computer science, engineering and operations.

One key advantage of these techniques is their ability to model a wide range of problems using optimization formulations. Polynomial optimization heavily relies on the moment-sums of squares (moment-SOS) approach proposed by Lasserre, which provides certificates for positive polynomials. On the practical side, however, there is 'no free lunch' and such optimization methods usually encompass severe scalability issues. Fortunately, for many applications, including the ones formerly mentioned, we can look at the problem in the eyes and exploit the inherent data structure arising from the cost and constraints describing the problem.This book presents several research efforts to resolve this scientific challenge with important computational implications. It provides the development of alternative optimization schemes that scale well in terms of computational complexity, at least in some identified class of problems. We show that there is a linear time greedy algorithm for a maximum matching in a strongly chordal graph provided a strongly perfect elimination ordering is known. This algorithm can be also turned into a parallel algorithm. The technique used can be also extended for the multidimensional matching for chordal and strongly chordal graphs yielding the first polynomial time algorithms for these classes of graphs (the multidimensional matching is NP-complete in general)."
