Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Karsten Harries provides a new and long-overdue reading of Martin Heidegger's well-known essay "Building Dwelling Thinking." Donald Kunze and Stephen Parcell consider possibilities of meaningful architectural space for a visual culture, continuing themes they addressed in Chora 1. Further reflections on the spaces of literature, cinema, and architecture include an interview with French writer and film maker Alain Robbe-Grillet and articles by Dagmar Motycka Weston on the surrealist city, Tracey Eve Winton on the museum as a paradigmatic modern building, and Terrance Galvin on spiritual space in the works of Jean Cocteau. Jean-Pierre Chupin and Bram Ratner explore historical themes in their essays on French Renaissance architect Philibert de l'Orme and the Jewish myth of the Golem. Gregory Caicco addresses ethical questions in his essay on the Greek agora and the death of Socrates, as does Lily Chi in her meditation on the critical issue of use in architectural works. A concern with architectural representation and generative strategies for the making of architecture is present throughout, especially in the essay by Joanna Merwood on the provocative House by British artist Rachel Whiteread.

Book The Chora of Metaponto 7

Download or read book The Chora of Metaponto 7 written by Joseph Coleman Carter and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 1713 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The seventh volume in the Institute of Classical Archaeology's series on the rural countryside (chora) of Metaponto is a study of the Greek sanctuary at Pantanello. The site is the first Greek rural sanctuary in southern Italy that has been fully excavated and exhaustively documented. Its evidence—a massive array of distinctive structural remains and 30,000-plus artifacts and ecofacts—offers unparalleled insights into the development of extra-urban cults in Magna Graecia from the seventh to the fourth centuries BC and the initiation rites that took place within the cults. Of particular interest are the analyses of the well-preserved botanical and faunal material, which present the fullest record yet of Greek rural sacrificial offerings, crops, and the natural environment of southern Italy and the Greek world. Excavations from 1974 to 2008 revealed three major phases of the sanctuary, ranging from the Archaic to Early Hellenistic periods. The structures include a natural spring as the earliest locus of the cult, an artificial stream (collecting basin) for the spring's outflow, Archaic and fourth-century BC structures for ritual dining and other cult activities, tantalizing evidence of a Late Archaic Doric temple atop the hill, and a farmhouse and tile factory that postdate the sanctuary's destruction. The extensive catalogs of material and special studies provide an invaluable opportunity to study the development of Greek material culture between the seventh and third centuries BC, with particular emphasis on votive pottery and figurative terracotta plaques.

Book excerpt: This volume aims at providing the first overview over landscape archaeology in the Black Sea region with particular focus on the cities' chorai including a comparative Mediterranean perspective. This type of archaeology is concerned with overall patterns beyond the individual site, and it faces the challenge of how to integrate time and space. From a methodological point of view, the ensemble of international contributors to (Re)guarding the chora shows the prospects of East-West collaboration over this fascinating kind of archaeology. Book excerpt: This international conference, sponsored jointly by the American School of Classical Studies and the British School of Archaeology at Athens, was dedicated to the memories of Alan John Bayard Wace and Carl William Blegen and to their long archaeological collaboration. The main theme of the conference was taken from their pioneering article, "Pottery as Evidence for Trade and Colonisation in the Aegean Bronze Age", Klio 32 (1939). The papers presented reflect the current state of scholarly opinion about prehistoric pottery from Mainland Greece and the extensive trade in that pottery, 50 years after Wace and Blegen's article. With 39 papers by archaeologists from 13 countries, the volume presents comprehensive surveys by period and area, as well as detailed discussions of new finds and problems, ranging from the Early, Middle, and Late Bronze Ages on the Mainland and islands of Greece, as well as Cyprus, the Levant, Egypt, Anatolia and Italy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Legend has it that the Ionian Islands were created as Zeus' beautiful lover, Io, raced through the Ionian Sea escaping Hera's wrath. Rising from the waters between Greece and Italy, the Ionians - peaks of an underwater mountain range - are quite unlike any of the other Greek islands and are some of the most culturally, historically and mythologically rich in all Greece. Consisting of Corfu, Paxos, Ithaka, Lefkas, Cephalonia, Zakynthos (Zante) and Kythera, they have been inhabited since Paleolithic times and have a colourful and often turbulent past. Variously invaded and occupied by the Goths, Arabs, Normans, Venetians, British, Germans and most recently by tourism, they have always absorbed and assimilated other cultures whilst still retaining their unique character and identity. The Ionians have been made famous in literature from Homer and Aeschylus to Gerald Durrell and Louis de Bernières and numerous myths are associated with them: Corfu is linked to the voyage of Jason's Argonauts, Aphrodite was born on Kythera, Paxos and Corfu were once joined until Poseidon threw his trident and separated them and Odysseus' home was on Ithaka. John Freely, who has visited and travelled throughout the islands over the course of 40 years, here illuminates the history, culture and present day of all seven islands, providing the most readable and comprehensive guide to the magnificent Ionians.

Book Theodore Metochites

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ioannis Polemis
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2023-12-28
  • ISBN : 0755651405

Download or read book Theodore Metochites written by Ioannis Polemis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-12-28 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The statesman and scholar Theodore Metochites was one of the most important personalities of the fourteenth-century Byzantine Empire. A close advisor to the emperor Andronikos II and restorer of the famous monastery of Chora in Constantinople, Metochites left various writings including orations, poems, essays and commentaries on classical and religious texts, in which he discusses the numerous problems that troubled him and his contemporaries, such as the decline of the state and the tension between public life and that of the philosopher. In this book, Ioannis Polemis provides the first in-depth study of Metochites' oeuvre, revealing the complex way he represented the authorial self to critique the politics and mores of his day, whilst at the same time shielding himself from potential criticism. Polemis details the way Metochites deftly manipulated figures and tropes from classical antiquity and early Christianity to justify his role in public life, which was traditionally shunned by scholars in the pursuit of 'logos'. The book provides unique insights into one of the late Empire's most important figures, as well as more widely deepening our understanding of classical reception in Byzantium and the social, political and intellectual climate of Constantinople in the fourteenth century.
