Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Illinois basin coals have a chlorine content which varies from 0.1% to values in excess of 0.5%. The mean chlorine content of the coal being mined is steadily rising. Customers are already expressing some unease and contracts limiting the chlorine content of coal have been reported. This has potentially significant implications for the industry. The object of this Conference was to attempt to quantify the impact of coal chlorine content on a variety of coal-using technologies, and to identify new research which is necessary to allow a rational definition of the limits of chlorine content required for each technology. The distribution of chlorine in the Illinois Basin coals was considered, and the current state of knowledge of the forms in which the chlorine is present in the coal was reviewed. The release of the chlorine from the coal during its processing, and the forms in which it is present in the products was examined. This information permits an assessment of the viability of methods of removing chlorine, either in coal preparation or from the post-processing products.The effect of chlorine on the coal conversion and combustion processes, and on the balance of the plant was reviewed. The most important effects are on the corrosion of construction materials at both high and low temperatures. These proceedings should be of interest to power plant, corrosion, and chemical engineers, and to coal cleaning technologists and researchers.

Book excerpt: This book contains papers presented at the Engineering Foundation Conference on mineral matter in fuels held on November 2-7, 1997 in Kona, Hawaii. The conference is one of a continuing series that was initiated by the CEGB Mar- wood Engineering Laboratories in 1963. The conference was to be eventually organised by the Engineering Foundation as the need for multi-disciplinary work related to c- trolling ash effects in combustors became apparent. The conference covers both the science and the applications. The papers also present case histories, particularly for current fuel technologies, developments in advanced technologies for power generation and mathematical modelling of these processes. Developments since 1963 have been slow, but steady, due to the complexity of the chemical and physical processes involved. However, the research presented here displays great improvement in our understanding of the mechanisms by which mineral matter will influence fuel use. Steve Benson from EERC presented a review and current status of issues related to ash deposition in coal combustion and gasification. The application of new analytical tools, which have been detailed in the previous conferences, is presented. These include CCSEM, as well as new techniques for char- terising sintering of ash, such as TMA, image analysis, X-ray diffraction crystallography and thermal analysis. The new analytical techniques were extended to encompass widely differing fuels such as biomass. Ole H Larsen from ELSAM Denmark presented a review of these advanced techniques.

Comprehensive results of such recent experimentation and development work on atmospheric fluidized bed combustion of coal are covered in this volume. Each chapter, written by an expert, treats one specific subject and gives both the theoretical background as well as experimental results and verifications. Though the contents deal primarily with coal combustion, much information proved applicable and relevant for the combustion or incineration of other solid fuels and waste in a fluidized bed. Results of extended research and fundamental backgrounds are presented in order to provide the designer and operator of fluidized bed combustors with more complete and systematic information needed for an optimal design and operation. The design and operating experience of a full scale fluidized bed boiler are discussed and compared with the results of theoretical and experimental research on pilot plant scale.
