Book Physiological Mechanisms Of Marine Pollutant Toxicity

Download or read book Physiological Mechanisms Of Marine Pollutant Toxicity written by Winona Vernberg and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Physiological Mechanisms of Marine Pollutant Toxicity contains the proceedings of a symposium on ""Pollution and Marine Organisms"" held at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina, on November 30 to December 3, 1981. It explores the effects of pollutants, such as petroleum hydrocarbons, heavy metals, and pesticides, on the physiology of marine organisms, along with the functional aspects of detoxification and the environmental health implications of pollution. Organized into three sections encompassing 24 chapters, this volume begins with a discussion of subcellular accumulation and detoxification of metals in aquatic animals such as fishes, crabs, and polychaetes. The reader is then introduced to the physiological mechanisms of pollutant toxicity, including the sublethal effects of pollutants on the gill morphology of the scallop, Placopecten magellanicus; mechanisms underlying the tolerance of killifish embryos to heavy metals; increased sensitivity of smolts in seawater to petroleum hydrocarbons, such as toluene and naphthalene; and physiological effects of sublethal concentrations of benzene and dimethylnaphthalene on blue crab juveniles. The book concludes by outlining research directions for linking cause and effect concerning pollution and marine organisms. This book will be a valuable resource for marine scientists, ecologists, and students.

Book Reaction of Oysters to Chlorination

Download or read book Reaction of Oysters to Chlorination written by Paul Simon Galtsoff and published by . This book was released on 1946 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reaction of oysters to free chlorine was studied by recording shell movement, measuring the rate of water through the gills, and determining the beat frequency of the lateral cilia of the gills. Live oysters are sensitve to intital treatment with chlorine concentration of 0.01-0.2 parts per million. Great variation in tolerance, observed in the experiments, is associated with the stimulation by chlorine of mucus secretion which acts as a protective coating of tissues. Experiments indicate that effective self-purification of oysters can be attained if their normal shell movements and pumping are not inhibited by free chlorine and the later is only used for disinfecting the shells and sea water.

Download or read book Death of the Chesapeake written by Richard Albright and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-05-29 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book focuses attention on the failure of current efforts to cleanup the Chesapeake Bay and suggests an approach often used in cleaning up environmentally damaged sites While military munitions sources contribute significantly to the pollution and degradation of Chesapeake Bay, they have been completely overlooked in many of the efforts to restore the Bay. Death of the Chesapeake explores this important aspect of the nation's environmental health. The book also recognizes for the first time that efforts to restore the Bay have failed because of the violation of a fundamental precept of environmental cleanup; that is, to sample the site and see what's there. The Bay itself has never been sampled. Thus, this book presents a view of the environmental condition of Chesapeake Bay that is totally unique. It covers a part of the history of the Bay that is not widely known, including how the Bay was formed. It presents a mixture of science, military history, and novel solutions to the Bay's degradation. In so doing, the author examines the military use of the Bay and reveals the extent that munitions dumpsites containing nitrogen and phosphorus as well as chemical warfare material are affecting the environment. The book concludes with the author's own cleanup plan, which, if implemented, would go a long way toward restoring health to the Bay. The book is supplemented with many photographs and maps.
