Book Ethnic Enclaves in Contemporary Japan

Download or read book Ethnic Enclaves in Contemporary Japan written by Yoshitaka Ishikawa and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-01 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first work to comprehensively investigate the enclaves of non-Japanese residents in Japan. In a comparative study, it convincingly examines eight enclaves of five nationalities (Chinese, Korean, Filipino, Brazilian and Turkish) in twelve municipalities. Japan now leads in terms of depopulation in countries affiliated with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The fact that the country has been supplementing the decreased number of Japanese nationals with an increase in migrants, who form enclaves, has attracted great attention. The temporal development and status quo of such enclaves are important concerns of researchers, policymakers and the general public. This publication is the result of joint studies by geographers and sociologists and contributes to a more detailed understanding of these topics. It thus represents a valuable achievement in the study of the segregation and enclave formation of minority nationalities. The empirical validity of existing explanatory frameworks, such as spatial assimilation and heterolocalism, is also discussed in a Japanese context.

Book An English Translation and Analysis of Major General Karl Ernst Haushofer s Geopolitics of the Pacific Ocean

Download or read book An English Translation and Analysis of Major General Karl Ernst Haushofer s Geopolitics of the Pacific Ocean written by Karl Haushofer and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new translation and updating of Geopolitics of the Pacific Ocean will allow English speakers to enjoy and learn from Karl Haushofer's seminal work. Born into an academic family in Munich in 1869, Haushofer attended Cadet school and joined the Bavarian General Staff. He spent two years in the Far East, returning by way of the Trans-Siberian Railroad in 1910. Impressed with the Japanese, he wrote four books urging an alliance between Germany and Japan. After serving in WWI, he retired with the rank of general and taught at the University of Munich. In 1926 he wrote Geopolitics of the Pacific Ocean, which contended that the center of world power had moved from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and advocated an alliance of Germany, Russia, India, China and Japan against the Colonial powers and the USA. He predicted mass migration around the Rim of the Pacific, and urged Japan to move against Southeast Asia, Australia and New Zealand, not China. Hitler's rise to power brought Haushofer into prominence. Soviet occupation of Eastern Europe, moves into the Middle East, conquest of China by the Communists, the Indian-Russian alliance, and invasion of Afghanistan almost brought Haushofer's Eurasian empire into reality. Current events in the Pacific Rim continue to bear out Haushofer's predictions.

Book excerpt: High mountains, polar expanses, volcanic peaks are exciting and special environments. 13 leading international geographers explore different aspects of these environments - disorientation, exploration, native knowledge, polar research. This is the first book to do this.High places - be they mountain peaks or the vast expanses of the polar latitudes - have always captured the human imagination. Inaccessible, extreme, they are commonly invested with awe and reverence, as places of physical challenge, intense experience. Increasingly, they are also treated as unique locations for science."High Places" explores the fascinating geographies of these special environments, revealing how senses are challenged, objectivities exposed, cultural assumptions laid bare. Whether walking the summit of Pico de Orizaba, the fourth highest volcano in the northern hemisphere; recounting the tale of the American explorer Charles Wilkes, charged with 'immoral mapping' in Antarctica; or exploring the 200,000 year old Greenland ice core; the international contributors reveal the richness and significance of these unique locations. Embracing Europe, Asia, North and Central America, Antarctica and the Arctic, "High Places" will interest geographers, historians of science, and those interested in polar/mountain studies, landscape, culture and environment.
