Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physics of strongly interacting many-body systems known as nuclear physics is a mature discipline which has achieved a remarkably quantitative success. It has explained with an impressive accuracy the properties of nuclei from the deuteron to heavy nuclei containing several hundreds of nucleons. This is the more remarkable when one realizes that in no way did the success depend on the existence of, or knowledge derived from, the fundamental theory of strong interactions now believed to be quantum chromodynamics (QCD).This monograph is a first, albeit embryonic, attempt to explain how a nucleus can be understood without invoking the explicit degrees of freedom of quarks and gluons while still staying within the basic premise of QCD and furthermore why do quark-gluon signatures not show up prominently in nuclear processes, including those processes involving short-distance encounters within nuclei. Such an understanding is largely based on the modern concepts of broken chiral symmetry and is believed to be essential in uncovering new physics expected to figure in the hadronic environment under extreme conditions of high temperature and/or high density.

Book Chiral Nuclear Dynamics II

Download or read book Chiral Nuclear Dynamics II written by Chang-Hwan Lee and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2008 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the sequel to the first volume to treat in one effective field theory framework the physics of strongly interacting matter under extreme conditions. This is vital for understanding the high temperature phenomena taking place in relativistic heavy ion collisions and in the early Universe, as well as the high-density matter predicted to be present in compact stars. The underlying thesis is that what governs hadronic properties in a heat bath and/or a dense medium is hidden local symmetry which emerges from chiral dynamics of light quark systems and from the duality between QCD in 4D and bulk gravity in 5D as in AdS/QCD. Special attention is paid to hot matter relevant for relativistic heavy ion processes and to dense matter relevant for compact stars that are either stable or on the verge of collapse into black holes.

Book Effective Field Theories For Nuclei And Compact star Matter Chiral Nuclear Dynamics Cnd iii

Download or read book Effective Field Theories For Nuclei And Compact star Matter Chiral Nuclear Dynamics Cnd iii written by Yong-liang Ma and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Effective field theories have been widely used in nuclear physics. This volume is devoted to exploring the intricate structure of compact-star matter inaccessible directly from QCD. It is principally anchored on hidden symmetries and topology presumed to be encoded in QCD. It differs from standard effective field theory and energy density functional approaches in that it exploits renormalization-group flow in the complex 'vacuum' sliding with density inferred from topology change identified as a manifestation of baryon-quark continuity in dense matter. It makes a variety of predictions that drastically differ from the conventional treatments that could be tested by upcoming terrestrial and astrophysical experiments. This monograph recounts how to go, in one unique field theoretic formalism in terms of hadronic degrees of freedom, from finite nuclei to dense compact-star matter that could be explored in RIB-type machines in nuclear physics as well as in LIGO-type gravity waves in astrophysics.

Book Advances in Nuclear Dynamics 5

Download or read book Advances in Nuclear Dynamics 5 written by Wolfgang Bauer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: th This workshop was the 15 in a series that addresses the subject of the dynamics of nuclear reactions. These workshops are dedicated to the concept that bringing together scientists from diverse areas of nuclear reactions promotes the vibrant exchange of ideas. This workshop hosted presentations from experimentalists and theorists, intermediate energy to ultrarelativistic energies, and final results to recent speculations. Many of these scientists would not normally be exposed to the work done in other subfields. Thus the Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics plays a unique role in information exchange and the stimulation of new ides. The field of nuclear dynamics has a bright future. New accelerators are being planned and completed around the world. New detectors are being constructed. New models and theories are being developed to describe these phenomena. The Winter Workshop on Nuclear Dynamics will continue to promote this lively and compelling field of research. WOLFGANG BAUER AND GARY D. WESTFALL v Previous Workshops The following table contains a list of the dates and locations of the previous Winter Workshops on Nuclear Dynamics as well as the members of the organizing committees. Book Electronic And Nuclear Dynamics In Molecular Systems

Download or read book Electronic And Nuclear Dynamics In Molecular Systems written by Yuichi Fujimura and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2011-06-20 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been rapid growth in the research field of real-time observation of nuclear and electronic dynamics in molecules. Its time range extends from femtoseconds to attoseconds. This has been made possible by the development of both laser technology and time-dependent theoretical treatments. Indeed, this research field is arguably the most active one in molecular science, second only to femtosecond chemistry. The outcome of the research is expected to make an important contribution to physics, materials science and biology as well as chemistry. In this monograph, the fundamental theories and methods, as well as experimental methods and results, of real-time observation of both nuclear and electronic motions in molecular systems are described. It is suitable for researchers who want to make an active contribution to the new research field and for graduate students who are interested in ultra-fast nuclear and electron dynamics in molecular systems.

Book New Aspects of Nuclear Dynamics

Download or read book New Aspects of Nuclear Dynamics written by J.H. Koch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1988 Summer School on New Aspects of Nuclear Dynamics took place in the style that by now has become a tradition: a series of lectures by well known scientists on modem topics of nuclear physics, where special emphasis is placed on the didactic aspects of the lectures. In the past few years, we have witnessed a rapid evolution of the field of nuclear physics towards novel directions of research. This development is accompanied by the construction of some of the largest experimental facilities ever built for nuclear research. The subjects covered by the Summer School focussed on two main issues currently under active investigation and which will be pursued with the new facilities: the transition from nucleonic to quark degrees of freedom in the decription of nuclear reactions, and the behavior of nuclear matter as one approaches extreme densities and temperatures. These topics in many respects go beyond traditional nuclear physics and the speakers therefore also included high energy physicists. From the response of the participants it was clear that the program of the school filled a gap in the curriculum of many students. We wish to thank all the speakers for their well organized lectures, which were nicely geared to the level of the school, and for spending extra time on problem sessions and extensive discussions. The organization of this Summer School was made possible by substantial support from the Science Committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Book Chiral Dynamics in Few nucleon Systems

Download or read book Chiral Dynamics in Few nucleon Systems written by Evgeny Epelbaum and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chiral Effective Field Theory (EFT) has become a standard tool for analyzing the properties of hadronic systems at low energy in a systematic and controlled way based upon the approximate and spontaneously broken chiral symmetry of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD). Based on Weinberg's idea to use chiral EFT to derive nuclear forces, this method has also been successfully applied to a few-nucleon problems. Energy-independent and hermitian nuclear potentials can be derived from the chiral Lagrangian e.g. using the method of unitary transformation. This scheme can also be applied to derive the corresponding nuclear current operator. They have used this framework to study the 2N system at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order (N3LO) in the chiral expansion. The theoretical uncertainty for scattering observables at N3LO is expected to be of the order (almost equal to) 0.5%, 7% and 25% at laboratory energy (almost equal to) 50, 150 and 250 MeV. The findings agree well with these estimations. Three- and more-nucleon systems have been considered so far up to next-to-next-to-leading order. For the first time, the complete chiral three-nucleon force has been included in few-body calculations, which starts to contribute at this order. N3LO analysis of> 2N systems is in progress. Recently they have worked out the leading and subleading isospin-violating 3N forces using the method of unitary transformation, which are largely driven by nucleon and pion mass differences. The work on isospin-breaking 2N forces is underway.
