Book excerpt: Reading is one of the most effective and fun ways to learn Mandarin Chinese, but the biggest frustration has been finding the right level of reading materials that are not only appropriate but also engaging to keep reading and improving. We are here to provide the solution and help language learners like you improve your Chinese through short stories that are not only leveled but also cover a range of topics so that you can enjoy reading and have fun studying Chinese simultaneously! Extensive Grading Process for Classifying Our Stories at the Right Level Research shows that understanding a text without needing the help of a dictionary requires the reader to understand 95% or more of the vocabulary used in the text. To improve one's language skills, the "input" (reading materials) needs to be one level above the learner's level. With that in mind, the AL Language Cafe team goes through an extensive process to ensure our stories are properly assigned to the appropriate level. There are many factors that our team takes into consideration, one of them being the percentage of known words based on the official HSK vocabulary list. In addition, our team also takes into consideration whether the new words are critical to understanding the main concepts of the story. Book excerpt: Learning Chinese can be frustrating and difficult, partly because it's very different from European languages. Following a teacher, textbook or language course is not enough. They show you the characters, words and grammar you need to become proficient in Chinese, but they don't teach you how to learn them! Regardless of what program you're in (if any), you need to take responsibility for your own learning. If you don't, you will miss many important things that aren't included in the course you're taking. If you study on your own, you need to be even more aware of what you need to do, what you're doing at the moment and the difference between them. Here are some of the questions I have asked and have since been asked many times by students: How do I learn characters efficiently? How do I get the most out of my course or teacher? Which are the best learning tools and resources? How can I become fluent in Mandarin? How can I improve my pronunciation? How do I learn successfully on my own? How can I motivate myself to study more? How can I fit learning Chinese into a busy schedule? The answers I've found to these questions and many others form the core of this book. It took eight years of learning, researching, teaching and writing to figure these things out. Not everybody has the time to do that! I can't go back in time and help myself learn in a better way, but I can help you! This book is meant for normal students and independent language learners alike. While it covers all major areas of learning, you won't learn Chinese just by reading this book. It's like when someone on TV teaches you how to cook: you won't get to eat the delicious dish just by watching the program; you have to do the cooking yourself. That's true for this book as well. When you apply what you learn, it will boost your learning, making every hour you spend count for more, but you still have to do the learning yourself. This is what a few readers have said about the book: "The book had me nodding at a heap of things I'd learnt the hard way, wishing I knew them when I started, as well as highlighting areas that I'm currently missing in my study." - Geoff van der Meer, VP engineering "This publication is like a bible for anyone serious about Chinese proficiency. It's easy for anyone to read and written with scientific precision." - Zachary Danz, foreign teacher, children's theatre artist About me I started learning Chinese when I was 23 (that's more than eight years ago now) and have since studied in many different situations, including serious immersion programs abroad, high-intensity programs in Sweden, online courses, as well as on the side while working or studying other things. I have also successfully used my Chinese in a graduate program for teaching Chinese as a second language, taught entirely in Chinese mostly for native speakers (the Graduate Institute for Teaching Chinese as a Second Language at National Taiwan Normal University). All these parts have contributed to my website, Hacking Chinese, where I write regularly about how to learn Mandarin.

Book Remembering the Kanji 2

Download or read book Remembering the Kanji 2 written by James W. Heisig and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2012-04-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following the first volume of Remembering the Kanji, the present work provides students with helpful tools for learning the pronunciation of the kanji. Behind the notorious inconsistencies in the way the Japanese language has come to pronounce the characters it received from China lie several coherent patterns. Identifying these patterns and arranging them in logical order can reduce dramatically the amount of time spent in the brute memorization of sounds unrelated to written forms. Many of the “primitive elements,” or building blocks, used in the drawing of the characters also serve to indicate the “Chinese reading” that particular kanji use, chiefly in compound terms. By learning one of the kanji that uses such a “signal primitive,” one can learn the entire group at the same time. In this way, Remembering the Kanji 2 lays out the varieties of phonetic pattern and offers helpful hints for learning readings, that might otherwise appear completely random, in an efficient and rational way. Individual frames cross-reference the kanji to alternate readings and to the frame in volume 1 in which the meaning and writing of the kanji was first introduced. A parallel system of pronouncing the kanji, their “Japanese readings,” uses native Japanese words assigned to particular Chinese characters. Although these are more easily learned because of the association of the meaning to a single word, the author creates a kind of phonetic alphabet of single syllable words, each connected to a simple Japanese word, and shows how they can be combined to help memorize particularly troublesome vocabulary. The 4th edition has been updated to include the 196 new kanji approved by the government in 2010 as “general-use” kanji.

Book HSK 2 Storybook Vol 1

Download or read book HSK 2 Storybook Vol 1 written by B Y Leong and published by LEONG BIK YOKE. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HSK 2 Storybook Vol. 1 consists of 10 short stories written in Simplified Chinese and Pinyin with free audio files. The purpose of this book is to provide readers with reading materials to practice their reading skills as well as an introduction to more extended sentence structure and longer articles. HSK 2 Storybook Vol. 1 has all the vocabularies in HSK 2. If you finish the book, you would have practised your reading skill on all the vocabularies in HSK 2. This book focuses on HSK 2 vocabularies. If you need to practise HSK 1 vocabularies, please consider reading HSK 1 Storybook. I have tried to restrict the vocabularies used in this book to HSK 2 as far as possible. Where it is not possible, I have introduced limited new words in the story. If you have learned all the HSK 2 Vocabulary and completed the Standard Course Book for HSK 2 by Jiang Liping, you would be able to read about 85% of this book without learning new words. Text to speech for this book has been enabled. You may also download the free audio files with the link and password provided on the last page. I consider the HSK 2 Vocabulary together with the new words introduced in Standard Course Book as Extended HSK 2 Vocabulary and I will refer to it as such from now on. The structure of this book is as follows: •Statistics – this will provide the reader with an analysis of the words used in the story and the level of difficulty. It will set out new words along with Pinyin and explanation. The new words set out here are not cumulative. New words are set out here as long as the words used are not in the Extended HSK 2 Vocabulary. •Story – this section is the story in Simplified Chinese without Pinyin and the English translation. To test level of reading skills, you should attempt to read this section first before going to the next. •Pinyin and Translation – this will be the section for Pinyin and English translation. •Appendix – for the benefit of those who need assistance on the HSK 2 and HSK 2 Standard Course vocabularies, I have included them in this section for your reference. The stories in this book are individual stories. A reader may choose to read this book in any particular order. To help you decide which story to read first, you may take a look at the statistics before you begin. The difficulty level for each story varies.
