Book Crito An adaptation to Chinese shadows theatre

Download or read book Crito An adaptation to Chinese shadows theatre written by and published by Gregori Navarro. This book was released on 2022-09-10 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book you are holding in your hands is a dramatization of one of Plato's most widely read Socratic dialogues. After the "Apology of Socrates", published in this same collection, we thought it necessary to adapt this work since it is its continuation. In this dialogue, and after Socrates' trial and condemnation to death narrated in the "Apology of Socrates", his friend Crito maintains the hope of the old philosopher's salvation and makes him a proposal. This work becomes an educational resource to work in the classroom in a multidisciplinary way: we will work on oratory, memorization, emphasis and dramatization of reading, philosophy, ancient history, theatrical performance, handicrafts, group work, structuring tasks and functions,... This book is designed to be read and played.

Book excerpt: An authoritative guide to the rise of Chinese shadow banking and its systemic implications Shadow Banking in China examines this rapidly growing sector in the Chinese economy, and what it means for your investments. Written by two world-class experts in Chinese banking, including the Chief Advisor to the China Banking Regulatory Commission and former Chairman of the Securities and Futures Commission in Hong Kong, this book is unique in providing true, first-hand perspectives from authorities within the world's largest economy. There is little widely-available information on China's shadow banking developments, and much of it is rife with disparate data, inaccuracies and overblown risks due to definitional and measurement differences. This book clears the confusion by supplying accurate information, on-the-ground context and invaluable national balance sheet analysis you won't find anywhere else. Shadow banking has grown to be a key source of credit in China, and a major component of the economy. This book serves as a primer for analysts and investors seeking real, useful information about the sector to better inform investment decisions. Discover what's driving the growth of shadow banking in China Learn the truth about both real and inflated risks Dig into popular rhetoric and clarify common misconceptions Access valuable data previously not published in English Despite shadow banking's critical influence on the Chinese economy, there have been very few official studies and even fewer books written on the subject. Book Human Rights in China

Download or read book Human Rights in China written by Eva Pils and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we make sense of human rights in China's authoritarian Party-State system? Eva Pils offers a nuanced account of this contentious area, examining human rights as a set of social practices. Drawing on a wide range of resources including years of interaction with Chinese human rights defenders, Pils discusses what gives rise to systematic human rights violations, what institutional avenues of protection are available, and how social practices of human rights defence have evolved. Three central areas are addressed: liberty and integrity of the person; freedom of thought and expression; and inequality and socio-economic rights. Pils argues that the Party-State system is inherently opposed to human rights principles in all these areas, and that – contributing to a global trend – it is becoming more repressive. Yet, despite authoritarianism's lengthening shadows, China’s human rights movement has so far proved resourceful and resilient. The trajectories discussed here will continue to shape the struggle for human rights in China and beyond its borders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's convulsive Cultural Revolution was conceived in 1966 as a 'great revolution that would touch the people to their very souls'. How are we to assess its impact fifty years on? In this volume, leading social and political scientists, historians and anthropologists examine the long-lasting consequences of the political, social, economic and cultural upheaval unleashed by Mao Zedong. Contributions from authors working within and outside the People's Republic of China consider the impact of this tumultuous mass movement from perspectives as diverse as market-based economic reform, clothing and fashion, the grassroots movements of late 1960s across the globe and the so-called 'lost generation' of sent-down youth. We find that collective and personal memories of the Cultural Revolution and its enduring institutional and social legacies continue to exert a profound effect on China and the Chinese people today.

Book excerpt: The art of "magic shadows" which just before the dawn of the twentieth century evolved into the modern motion picture, was born three centuries ago, in Rome. Just at the appointed hour for Kircher's show, a few distinguished Monsignori, in flowing purple were driven to the entrance in their carriages with a mounted escort. Nothing like Kircher's show had ever been presented before. He had chained light and shadow, but the suspicion was held by some of the spectators that there was a dark magic about it all and that Kircher had dabbled in the black arts.

Book Travel Shadows by Justinus Kerner

Download or read book Travel Shadows by Justinus Kerner written by Harold B. Segel and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-17 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Justinus Kerner (1786–1862) was one of the most celebrated figures in nineteenth-century German culture. A physician by training, he was also a leading member of the Swabian Romantic circle of poets which included, among others, Ludwig Uhland and Gustav Schwab. Kerner’s international fame rests primarily on his contributions to the investigation of paranormal phenomena. The most important of these was his exhaustive case study, Die Seherin von Prevorst (The Seeress of Prevorst, 1829). The book was translated into English in 1849 by the English writer, Catherine Crowe (1803–76). Until the present, this has been the only work of Kerner available in English. Apart from his many scientific publications and his poetry, Kerner was also the author of one of the more intriguing literary works of German Romanticism, Die Reiseschatten (Travel Shadows, 1811). Ostensibly an account of his travels through Germany and Austria following his graduation from the University of Tübingen, the book is a highly imaginative, almost surreal concoction of Romantic, sentimental, grotesque, satirical, and Old German folkloric elements. Attributed by Kerner to an itinerant “shadow performer” named Lux, Travel Shadows was inspired by the tradition of “Chinese Shadows” (ombres chinoises) and represents Kerner’s attempt to create a travel narrative in the form of a grandiose shadow show. In the introduction to his translation of Travel Shadows – the first in English – Harold B. Segel situates Kerner’s work in the context of the emergence of a German shadow show tradition in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
