This book was released on 2009 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the early seventeenth century when the secret of porcelain was first carried from China to Japan by Korean potters, Japan has produced some of the world's most exquisite porcelains. The Kakiemon masters in Arita on the island of Kyushu gained particular renown for the quality of their colourful overglaze enamels and artistic designs. Through exports Kakiemon ware had a profound impact on the development of European porcelain in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, inspiring ceramic manufacturers in both continental Europe and England to reach new levels of technical and artistic achievement. Dragons, Tigers and Bamboo highlights 170 masterpieces from the Bill and Molly Anne Macdonald Collection at the Gardiner Museum of Ceramic Art in Toronto, Canada. This extraordinary collection illustrates many different aspects of the historical interaction between Japanese and European porcelain during the seventeenth, eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. It is unquestionably the best cross-cultural porcelain collection in Canada and is among the best of its kind in the world. Illustrated with more than 160 full-colour photographs commissioned for this volume, Dragons, Tigers and Bamboo for the first time makes the Macdonald Collection accessible to an international audience.

Book Japanese Export Lacquer

Download or read book Japanese Export Lacquer written by Oliver R. Impey and published by Hotei Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japanese export lacquer exerted an influence on European art and decoration quite out of proportion to its physical presence in Europe. The vast amounts shipped from Japan -- mainly in three stages (1590s-1640, 1639-93, 1800-40s) -- demonstrate the need for the study of this beautiful material. Japanese export lacquer is the first full treatment of lacquerware made to European demand, its transportation and the lacquer market in Europe as well as the effect of lacquer and its use in a European context. Trading patterns and its use are described in detail, based on the documentary evidence of Europeans in the Far East, on notes kept by the Portuguese in Japan, on the important and comprehensive archives of the Dutch East India Company and to a lesser extent and for a shorter period, of the English Honourable East India Company, as well as on contemporary comments and inventories within Europe. Full use is made of the sparse Japanese documentation of the trade, only available for the period 1709-11and the early nineteenth century. Reference is also made to additional records kept by American ships' captains and supercargoes from Massachusetts. While the Portuguese seem to have regarded Japanese lacquer as mainly suitable for use as grand gifts, particularly within the Habsburg family network, it is surprising how much of the lacquer for the Portuguese market (the so-called Namban lacquer) survives in Europe, testifying to extensive (undocumented) private trade, as well as the orders of the Society of Jesus. The Dutch used lacquer as gifts and for trade. The English Company never traded in lacquer but was involved in many private transactions. The inter-Asian markets were vital to theDutch, particularly where lacquer was regarded as suitable for gifts to Oriental potentates. This is well documented and descriptions of orders for lacquer elephant howdahs and carrying chairs inform us of what has been lost. Th

Book Calling All Minds

Download or read book Calling All Minds written by Temple Grandin, Ph.D. and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2019-04-30 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From world-renowned autism spokesperson, scientist, and inventor Temple Grandin -- a book of personal stories, inventions, and facts that will blow young inventors' minds and make them soar. Have you ever wondered what makes a kite fly or a boat float? Have you ever thought about why snowflakes are symmetrical, or why golf balls have dimples? Have you ever tried to make a kaleidoscope or build a pair of stilts? In Calling All Minds, Temple Grandin explores the ideas behind all of those questions and more. She delves into the science behind inventions, the steps various people took to create and improve upon ideas as they evolved, and the ways in which young inventors can continue to think about and understand what it means to tinker, to fiddle, and to innovate. And laced throughout it all, Temple gives us glimpses into her own childhood tinkering, building, and inventing. More than a blueprint for how to build things, in Calling All Minds Temple Grandin creates a blueprint for different ways to look at the world. And more than a call to action, she gives a call to imagination, and shows readers that there is truly no single way to approach any given problem--but that an open and inquisitive mind is always key. Praise for Calling All Minds: "An impassioned call to look at the world in unique ways with plenty of practical advice on how to cultivate a curious, inquiring, imaginative mind." —Kirkus Reviews "Both practical and inspirational, this useful book describes an overall approach to viewing the world creatively, as exemplified by the numerous projects and supporting material provided here." —VOYA "Grandin offers a nuanced perspective on the qualities of a successful inventor—notably, a sense of wonder and curiosity, careful observation, and the willingness to learn from mistakes." —Publishers Weekly
