Book Pictures and Visuality in Early Modern China

Download or read book Pictures and Visuality in Early Modern China written by Craig Clunas and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2006-03-01 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pictures and Visuality in Early Modern China is not simply a survey of sixteenth-century images, but rather, a thorough and thoughtful examination of visual culture in China's Ming Dynasty, one that considers images wherever they appeared—not only paintings, but also illustrated books, maps, ceramic bowls, lacquered boxes, painted fans, and even clothing and tomb pictures. Clunas's theory of visuality incorporates not only the image and the object upon which it is placed but also the culture which produced and purchased it. Economic changes in sixteenth-century China—the rapid expansion of trade routes and a growing class of consumers—are thus intricately bound up with the evolution of the image itself. Pictures and Visuality in Early Modern China will be a touchstone for students of Chinese history, art, and culture.

Book Taiwan s Imagined Geography

Download or read book Taiwan s Imagined Geography written by Emma Jinhua Teng and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-03-23 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Until 300 years ago, the Chinese considered Taiwan a “land beyond the seas,” a “ball of mud” inhabited by “naked and tattooed savages.” The incorporation of this island into the Qing empire in the seventeenth century and its evolution into a province by the late nineteenth century involved not only a reconsideration of imperial geography but also a reconceptualization of the Chinese domain. The annexation of Taiwan was only one incident in the much larger phenomenon of Qing expansionism into frontier areas that resulted in a doubling of the area controlled from Beijing and the creation of a multi-ethnic polity. The author argues that travelers’ accounts and pictures of frontiers such as Taiwan led to a change in the imagined geography of the empire. In representing distant lands and ethnically diverse peoples of the frontiers to audiences in China proper, these works transformed places once considered non-Chinese into familiar parts of the empire and thereby helped to naturalize Qing expansionism. By viewing Taiwan–China relations as a product of the history of Qing expansionism, the author contributes to our understanding of current political events in the region."

Book Pictures of the Chinese Drawn by Themselves

Download or read book Pictures of the Chinese Drawn by Themselves written by Robert Henry Cobbold and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pictures of the Chinese, Drawn by Themselves A residence of eight years among the Chinese at the port of Ningpo, with frequent opportunities of travel in the province of Chekeang, enables the writer to offer this unpretending little volume to the English public. The pen-and-ink etchings, contributed by a native artist, are not the least valuable part of the book. They are faithful representations of the Northern Chinese. The contour of the figures differs much from the, prevailing type of the South, and affords a pleasing variety to the hackneyed form to which we have been accustomed. The only figures of a foreign cast (for all without the boundaries of the province must be accounted foreign) are those of the "fortune-teller" in the sketch "Symbolism of Words;" and of the "phrenologist." Nor is this without reason. Persons who follow such professions are usually strangers. "The prophet without honour in his own country" is a world-wide proverb. Book The East India Company at Home 1757 1857

Download or read book The East India Company at Home 1757 1857 written by Margot Finn and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The East India Company at Home, 1757–1857 explores how empire in Asia shaped British country houses, their interiors and the lives of their residents. It includes chapters from researchers based in a wide range of settings such as archives and libraries, museums, heritage organisations, the community of family historians and universities. It moves beyond conventional academic narratives and makes an important contribution to ongoing debates around how empire impacted Britain. The volume focuses on the propertied families of the East India Company at the height of Company rule. From the Battle of Plassey in 1757 to the outbreak of the Indian Uprising in 1857, objects, people and wealth flowed to Britain from Asia. As men in Company service increasingly shifted their activities from trade to military expansion and political administration, a new population of civil servants, army officers, surveyors and surgeons journeyed to India to make their fortunes. These Company men and their families acquired wealth, tastes and identities in India, which travelled home with them to Britain. Their stories, the biographies of their Indian possessions and the narratives of the stately homes in Britain that came to house them, frame our explorations of imperial culture and its British legacies.
