Book Chinese Studies in the Netherlands

Download or read book Chinese Studies in the Netherlands written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2013-12-09 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Netherlands have a long and proud history in Chinese studies. This volume collects not only articles that trace the historical development of Chinese studies in the Netherlands from the middle of the nineteenth century to the present and beyond, but also studies that deal with Dutch research in specific disciplines within Chinese studies. Chinese studies in the Netherlands originated from the needs of the Dutch colonial administration in the Dutch East Indies, but developed a strong philological emphasis in the first part of the twentieth century, to turn increasingly towards disciplinary research on modern and contemporary China in the last few decades. Contributors include Leonard Blussé, Maghiel van Crevel, Barend ter Haar, Albert Hoffstädt, Wilt Idema, Mark Leenhouts, Oliver Moore, Frank Pieke and Rint Sybesma.

Book excerpt: ilk Thread uses objects from the Rijksmuseum collection to explore the shared history of China and the Netherlands from 1600 to the present. This book pays lavish attention both to the intensive efforts of Dutch traders to reach China and establish a trading post, and to the Dutch peoples fascination with Chinese goods. The products of the encounter the silk, porcelain and lacquerware, the travelogues and atlases defined perceptions of China in the Netherlands and far beyond. In the same period, the Netherlands gained a small but significant place in Chinese consciousness. The often-turbulent relationship between China and the West forms an intriguing contrast to the enduring Dutch interest in China and the magnificent objects emanating from it. Tristan Mostert is a historian specializing in Dutch overseas history in the early modern period. A former junior curator in the History department of the Rijksmuseum, he is currently working on a doctoral thesis at Leiden University. Jan van Campen is the Rijksmuseums Curator of Asian Export Art, a position he has held since 2001. His areas of special interest are Chinese porcelain and the history of Asian art collecting in Europe. Silk Thread is part of the Country Series published by the Rijksmuseums History department. Each book in the series uses objects in the Rijksmuseum collection to explore the shared history of the Netherlands and one of the following countries: Indonesia, Japan, China, India, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Ghana, Suriname and Brazil.

Book Chinese Economic Activity in Netherlands India

Download or read book Chinese Economic Activity in Netherlands India written by M. R. Fernando and published by Institute of Southeast Asian. This book was released on 1992 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exceptional commercial success of many Southeast Asians of Chinese origin has generated much contemporary debate about the cultural or social basis of that success. This book shows that those questions have long roots in Indonesia. Dutch colonial officials in the nineteenth century expressed alarm over the rural economy. In the twentieth century more detached assessments sought to describe and explain Chinese business methods and the crucial networks they established through the Archipelago. An indispensable volume which appeared under the name of J.L Vleming used the resources of the Duth colonial taxation service to explain the nature of Chinese commercial and credit systems. This volume contains a selection of the most important writing in Dutch (by prominent lawyer Phao Liong Gie as well as by Dutch officials) that has been translated for the first time. These extracts cover the period from 1850 to 1936, though half the volume is taken from the 1926 book edited by Vleming. Basic demographic data and the revenues drawn from Chinese-held farms are presented in a statistical supplement.

It also illustrates how Chinese immigrants live together and operate within a western society.

Book Media and Communication in the Chinese Diaspora

Download or read book Media and Communication in the Chinese Diaspora written by Wanning Sun and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-09-16 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rise of China has brought about a dramatic increase in the rate of migration from mainland China. At the same time, the Chinese government has embarked on a full-scale push for the internationalisation of Chinese media and culture. Media and communication have therefore become crucial factors in shaping the increasingly fraught politics of transnational Chinese communities. This book explores the changing nature of these communities, and reveals their dynamic and complex relationship to the media in a range of countries worldwide. Overall, the book highlights a number of ways in which China’s "going global" policy interacts with other factors in significantly reshaping the content and contours of the diasporic Chinese media landscape. In doing so, this book constitutes a major rethinking of Chinese transnationalism in the twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Central to this publication is the question as to which porcelain reached the Netherlands in the 17th century and how it was esteemed.Following the publication of several Dutch-language books connected to various exhibitions, all contributors to this book have long wanted to step beyond this limited scope with an international publication that contributed to the global research field of Chinese ceramics. Thirteen authors, both within and outside the Netherlands, elucidate the different sides of this topic. Although it ultimately is the history of how it was received – what was valued and why – a broad range of viewpoints have been chosen in order to answer those two questions adequately.--
