Book China and the End of Global Silver 1873 1937

Download or read book China and the End of Global Silver 1873 1937 written by Austin Dean and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late nineteenth century, as much of the world adopted some variant of the gold standard, China remained the most populous country still using silver. Yet China had no unified national currency; there was not one monetary standard but many. Silver coins circulated alongside chunks of silver and every transaction became an "encounter of wits." China and the End of Global Silver, 1873–1937 focuses on how officials, policy makers, bankers, merchants, academics, and journalists in China and around the world answered a simple question: how should China change its monetary system? Far from a narrow, technical issue, Chinese monetary reform is a dramatic story full of political revolutions, economic depressions, chance, and contingency. As different governments in China attempted to create a unified monetary standard in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century, the United States, England, and Japan tried to shape the direction of Chinese monetary reform for their own benefit. Austin Dean argues convincingly that the Silver Era in world history ended owing to the interaction of imperial competition in East Asia and the state-building projects of different governments in China. When the Nationalist government of China went off the silver standard in 1935, it marked a key moment not just in Chinese history but in world history.

Book The History of Chinese Ceramics

Download or read book The History of Chinese Ceramics written by Lili Fang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 1184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adopting the perspective of anthropology of art and combining it with global academic insights, this book helps the readers to recognize that “history is, in great measure, the record of human activity which spreads from the local to the regional, from the regional to the global, and from the global to the universal.” Readers will learn that China was not only the first country to create porcelain, but also the first to export it to the world, both the products and its techniques. Therefore, the history of Chinese ceramics reflects the history of Chinese foreign trade on the one hand and depicts the expansion of Chinese ceramic techniques and cultures on the other. In addition to ceramics types, molds, decoration, and techniques, the book analyzes the spiritual impacts and aesthetic conceptions embodied in the utensils of daily use by the Chinese literati. Therefore, it reaches the conclusion that ideological systems and not technological systems are what bring about social revolutions. In addition, the book is richly illustrated with pictures of earthenware and finely glazed pieces from later periods.

Book A HISTORY OF FINE ARTS ECONOMY OF CHINA

Download or read book A HISTORY OF FINE ARTS ECONOMY OF CHINA written by Li Xiangmin and published by American Academic Press. This book was released on 2024-07-01 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Fine Arts Economy of China is a groundbreaking book that offers a fresh perspective on the economic aspects of Chinese fine arts. It explores how economic activities related to art have influenced art history, introducing new methods and ideas to the field of art history research. The book provides a detailed analysis of the production, exchange, and consumption of various art forms in China, including calligraphy, paintings, crafts, and architecture. It examines the evolution of art markets, the driving forces behind them, and how they were shaped by social, political, economic, and cultural factors throughout Chinese history. This work uniquely combines art history with economic aspects. It looks at the economic origins of art and identifies three main types of art sponsorship in China: royal, private, and public. The history of art economics in China is divided into three phases, each marked by different sponsorship trends. The book highlights the significance of art marketization, showing its impact not just on the economy, but also on cultural and artistic standards in society. A History of Fine Arts Economy of China is an important contribution to academic literature, offering a comprehensive view of the intersection between art and economics in Chinese history.
