Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chinese Characteristics Within the past thirty years, the Chinese has madeyhimself a factor in the. Affairs of many lands. He is seen to be irrepressible; is felt to be incomprehensible, He cannot, indeed, be rightly understood in any country but China, yet the impression still prevails that he is a bundle of contradictions who cannot be understood at all. But after all there is no apparent reason now that, several hundred years of our acquaintance with China have elapsed, why what is actually known of its people should not be co-ordinated, as well as any other combination of complex phenomena. This book was released on 2017-06-03 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of the Chinese Characters Tun Chinese characters are records of a distant past. In stead of being hidden under the rubbish heaps of ruined palaces, like the Cuneiform Inscriptions, they have, millen nium after millennium, been passing in open day through the hands of scribes. Subject to the caprices of each genera tion of writers, they now present themselves to us in a vast variety of successive forms. Through these forms, if the inquisitive eye of science trace correctly the process of change, we may acquire a knowledge of the origin of Chinese writing, and the method pursued by the inventors. Download or read book Synoptical Studies in Chinese Character Classic Reprint written by Herbert A. Giles and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Synoptical Studies in Chinese Character What little there was in native works of practical value to foreign students has been embodied in the present collection, and for the rest, it can hardly be expected that every comparison drawn will meet with general approval. At the same time, it must be borne in mind that all the characters in any group are not necessarily to be compared one with another, though an ele ment of sameness will be found always to pervade each group and frequently a whole series of such which have been placed intentionally in juxtaposition. Further, although this volume begins from the beginning and leaves the student on the threshold of written Chinese, yet a thorough analytical knowledge of all the characters here given will make future classification a compa ratively easy matter - and the bitterness of Chinese is past. Book Glimpses of China and Chinese Homes Classic Reprint

Download or read book Glimpses of China and Chinese Homes Classic Reprint written by Edward Sylvester Morse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-19 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glimpses of China and Chinese Homes Chinese Characteristics. Dr. Smith was for twenty-two years connected with the American Board of Foreign Missions in China. He says: The circumstance that a person has lived twenty-two years in China is no more a guarantee that he is competent to write of the charac teristics of the Chinese than the fact that another man has lived for twenty-two years in a silver mine is proof that he is a fit person to compose a treatise on metal lurgy or bi-metalism. This is unquestionably too modest, as will be realized by any one who has read his remarkable analysis of Chinese character, yet it may stand as a warning to those who generalize about the Chinese on slight acquaintance. Whatever conclusions I have come to, superficial as they may be, are curiously borne out by the testimony of others who have spent as many years in the Empire as I have days, and have travelled as many thousand miles in the country as I have single miles. Most of this material appeared first in a series of ar ticles in the American Architect under the title of Journal Sketches in China, and to the publishers of that journal, and to its editor, Mr. William Rotch Ware, I am indebted for the privilege of publishing them in book-form. A number of sketches have been added. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Glimpses Into Chinese Homes Classic Reprint written by Elizabeth U. Yates and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Glimpses Into Chinese Homes ET us look into the homes of China, and thus shall we learn of the hearts of its people, for the home is the mirror of the heart. The passions, tastes and imaginations of the soul are all portrayed in the abiding-place of the body. Chinese character, politics, religions and social customs, are all shown in its domes tic relations. And, indeed, is not the home, anywhere, an epitome of national life, its institutions and sentiments Inasmuch as we understand the determinate quantity of family life, insomuch do we know the trend of national existence. Rome, in the zenith of her power, governed but one hundred and twenty millions of men. The boy Emperor of China sways his sceptre over three times that number. What roofs cover these hearts? Under what conditions are they abiding? Hundreds of thousands are born, live, and die on boats. By far the greatest portion of this class of people is found in the southern part of the Empire. The waters about Can ton are the most densely populated; yet this style of living prevails, to some extent, in all latitudes of the country. Book The Chinese as They Are

Download or read book The Chinese as They Are written by George Tradescant Lay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-10 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Chinese as They Are: Their Moral, Social, and Literary Character; New Analysis of the Language; With Succinct Views of Their Principal Arts and Sciences A larger work was designed; but as so many books pre fer their claims to the leisure of reading men, the Author has done rightly, perhaps, in yielding to those who suggested that a small one would be more acceptable. The Author commends the chapter upon the Chinese Language to the special attention of the reader. It is not easy to be very interesting or very popular in treating a subject so far removed from the ordinary range of investiga tion; still he thinks that the man who has a taste for philological researches, will find principles stated in it that are worthy of his best consideration, and a mode of dealing with the Chinese language suggested, which will ultimately unravel all the absurdities adhering to that or any other tongue. In the chapters on Music and Philosophy some curious matters are given, which will scarcely fail to call up a train of ideas and reflections in those who delight to trace the records of science as it existed in its primeval simplicity. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Real Chinese Question That is a charitable rule of life which bids us take every man at his best. It is, however, wiser and safer to study each individual as thoroughly as circumstances will permit, and then to strike a balance between good and evil traits of char acter, accepting the result as a basis for judgment and action, so far as he is concerned. The same rule may be broadened with safety, and applied to nations or races. If, in such use, it serves no other purpose, it will, at least, act as a corrective to ignorant prejudice, and to that most common fault, prejudgment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Account of the Structure of Chinese Characters Under 300 Primary Forms: After the Shwoh-Wan, 100, A. D., And the Phonetic Shwoh-Wan, 1833 To the majority of students of Chinese, whether they be natives or foreigners, eight or nine tenths of the characters in the language are nothing more than conventional signs, having no resemblance to the things, or natural association with the ideas, which they represent. The main object of this work is to point out the original resemblances of the characters to things, and explain the uses of their several parts.
