Book excerpt: For over a century ceramics have been found and collected from various sites in the Philippines. The presence and distribution of these wares throughout the archipelago testify to the country's strategic location on the ancient maritime trade route and to its interaction with its southern Chinese as well as Southeast Asian neighbors. Of particular interest has been the excavation of grave goods, remnants of the burial culture of the Filipinos before the arrival of the European colonizers. Among these are the much-prized white ware and qingbai ware from Jiangxi, Fujian, and Guangdong provinces in China, as well as white ware of Thai and Vietnamese provenance. Published in connection with an exhibition presented by the Oriental Ceramic Society of the Philippines in Manila in March 1993, this book shows the bulk of the exhibition. comprised of the delicate blue-tinged white qingbai porcelain from Jingdezhen in Jiangxi province and produced in large numbers during the Southern Song period (A.D. 1127-1279). The exceptionally fine craftmanship and variety of shapes are amply illustrated in this book. Included are five previously unpublished papers by Rita C. Tan, Li Zhi-yan, Rosemary E. Scott, Allison I. Diem, and Roxanna M. Broun relating to the characteristics of white ware and to their excavation in the Philippines supplement the catalogue of illustrations.

Book excerpt: Western scholars of ancient Chinese ceramics have long thought blue and white porcelain manufactured before the Ming (1368-1644 A.D.), dates to the Yuan (1279-1368 A.D.). Even in China today these porcelains are still termed “Yuan Blue and White.” Based upon first-hand surveys of sites in Inner Mongolia, Adam T. Kessler’s Song Blue and White Porcelain on the Silk Road demonstrates that blue and white was made during the Song (960-1279 A.D.) ended up in the hands of the Xi Xia (1038-1226 A.D.) and the Jin (1115-1234 A.D.). Blue and white found today in hoards was buried prior to Mongol invasions of China in the 1200s. Sites from the Philippines to Egypt have yielded Song blue and white. Also reviewed is the cobalt-bearing ore used by Song China to create blue and white.

The First Emperor was famously said to have had the heart of a tiger and a wolf. The names of foreign tribes were traditionally written with characters that included animal radicals. In modern times, the communist government frequently referred to Nationalists as “running dogs,” and President Xi Jinping, vowing to quell corruption at all levels, pledged to capture both “the tigers” and “the flies.” Splendidly illustrated with works ranging from Bronze Age vessels to twentieth-century conceptual pieces, this volume is a wide-ranging look at zoomorphic and anthropomorphic imagery in Chinese art. The contributors, leading scholars in Chinese art history and related fields, consider depictions of animals not as simple, one-for-one symbolic equivalents: they pursue in depth, in complexity, and in multiple dimensions the ways that Chinese have used animals from earliest times to the present day to represent and rhetorically stage complex ideas about the world around them, examining what this means about China, past and present. It explores the regional settlement pattern arising from Adityavarman’s highland interregnum (c. 1347–75), and provides the first attempt to place the archaeological remains and the landscape of Tanah Datar, a fertile plain in the highlands of West Sumatra, in a cultural historic synthesis. The core of this research consisted of excavations at Bukit Gombak and Bukit Kincir. Bukit Gombak was a central place in Adityavarman’s kingdom, and provides evidence of the organization and material development of this political entity. Surveys uncovered other settlements that could be examined in relation to each other and to sites from earlier and later periods, and used to sketch out the settlement history of Tanah Datar from prehistoric times to the colonial period. The book consists of detailed studies of metal, ceramics and glass finds by laboratory-based specialists as well as careful descriptions of stone, clay and other finds.
