Book Chinese Porcelain of the 19th and 20th Centuries

Download or read book Chinese Porcelain of the 19th and 20th Centuries written by H. A. van Oort and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the favourable reception of The Porcelain of Hung-hsien, it soon became apparent that a follow-up was needed in order to broaden the scope of the subject and cover the 19th and 20th centuries. Since most readers are unacquainted with the porcelain of this period, it seemed essential to provide a large number of photographs to corroborate my arguments. They have been taken mainly of lesser known pieces in private collections, many of their owners prefering to remain anonymous, since it often appears that the possibilities of theft and tax evoke similar feelings among collectors.--Preface.

Book Chinese and Japanese Porcelain for the Dutch Golden Age

Download or read book Chinese and Japanese Porcelain for the Dutch Golden Age written by Jan van Campen and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Central to this publication is the question as to which porcelain reached the Netherlands in the 17th century and how it was esteemed.Following the publication of several Dutch-language books connected to various exhibitions, all contributors to this book have long wanted to step beyond this limited scope with an international publication that contributed to the global research field of Chinese ceramics. Thirteen authors, both within and outside the Netherlands, elucidate the different sides of this topic. Although it ultimately is the history of how it was received – what was valued and why – a broad range of viewpoints have been chosen in order to answer those two questions adequately.--

Download or read book The City of Blue and White written by Anne Gerritsen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-07 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We think of blue and white porcelain as the ultimate global commodity: throughout East and Southeast Asia, the Indian Ocean including the African coasts, the Americas and Europe, consumers desired Chinese porcelains. Many of these were made in the kilns in and surrounding Jingdezhen. Found in almost every part of the world, Jingdezhen's porcelains had a far-reaching impact on global consumption, which in turn shaped the local manufacturing processes. The imperial kilns of Jingdezhen produced ceramics for the court, while nearby private kilns manufactured for the global market. In this beautifully illustrated study, Anne Gerritsen asks how this kiln complex could manufacture such quality, quantity and variety. She explores how objects tell the story of the past, connecting texts with objects, objects with natural resources, and skilled hands with the shapes and designs they produced. Through the manufacture and consumption of Jingdezhen's porcelains, she argues, China participated in the early modern world.

Book Collecting Chinese and Japanese Porcelain in Pre revolutionary Paris

Download or read book Collecting Chinese and Japanese Porcelain in Pre revolutionary Paris written by Stéphane Castelluccio and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautifully illustrated volume traces the changing market for Chinese and Japanese porcelain in Paris from the early years of the reign of Louis XIV (1643-1715) through the eighteenth century. The increase in the quantity and variety of East Asian wares imported during this period spurred efforts to record and analyze them, resulting in a profusion of inventories, sales catalogues, and treatises. These contemporary sources-- many never published before--provide a comprehensive picture of porcelains: when they were first available; what kinds were most admired during various periods; where and at what price they were sold; who owned them; and how they were displayed and used. Over the course of these two centuries, a preference for blue-and-white Chinese works arranged in crowded, asymmetrical groupings gave way to symmetrical presentations of polychrome and monochrome Japanese pieces on brackets, tables, and mantelpieces, often mixed with bronzes, marble vases, and paintings. Some porcelains now received elaborate silver or gilt bronze mounts. The illustrated pieces, which include pitchers, vases, lidded bowls, and writing sets, are drawn from the collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Also included are exquisite porcelains from the Musée Guimet in Paris, many published here for the first time.

Book excerpt: 'The products of the Imperial and other kilns have created one of the gentlest and most beautiful of the arts. The technical inventiveness of Chinese potters - they had discovered methods of glazing pottery by the third century BC - made possible the manufacture of wonderfully delicate materials and colours. Their versatility as artists enabled them to design new shapes, and decorate them with incised or applied motifs which have been imitated throughout the world. Anthony du Boulay traces the development of Chinese porcelain from its beginnings to the early 20th century. His scholarly survey of this wonderful artistic tradition' --from inside cover.

Book The Pilgrim Art

Download or read book The Pilgrim Art written by Robert Finlay and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2010-02-17 with total page 461 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Illuminating one thousand years of history, The Pilgrim Art explores the remarkable cultural influence of Chinese porcelain around the globe. Cobalt ore was shipped from Persia to China in the fourteenth century, where it was used to decorate porcelain for Muslims in Southeast Asia, India, Persia, and Iraq. Spanish galleons delivered porcelain to Peru and Mexico while aristocrats in Europe ordered tableware from Canton. The book tells the fascinating story of how porcelain became a vehicle for the transmission and assimilation of artistic symbols, themes, and designs across vast distances—from Japan and Java to Egypt and England. It not only illustrates how porcelain influenced local artistic traditions but also shows how it became deeply intertwined with religion, economics, politics, and social identity. Bringing together many strands of history in an engaging narrative studded with fascinating vignettes, this is a history of cross-cultural exchange focused on an exceptional commodity that illuminates the emergence of what is arguably the first genuinely global culture.
