Book Regional Geological Survey of Hanggai Xianxia and Chuancun Zhejiang Province in China

Download or read book Regional Geological Survey of Hanggai Xianxia and Chuancun Zhejiang Province in China written by Jianfang Zhang and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Open Access book introduces readers to the regional geology of Hanggai, Xianxia and Chuancun, the area between China's northern Zhejiang Province and southern Anhui Province and explores the strata, magmatic rocks and tectonic structures in 1:50,000 scale geological maps. Based on studies of multiple stratigraphic divisions, the standard stratigraphic section of the upper Ordovician Hirnantian in the lower Yangtze region is established, revealing for the first time numerous "Burgess Shale-type" sponge fossils in Hirnantian strata and identifying 10 grapholite fossil belts and various fossil categories, including chitin, trilobites, gastropods, brachiopods, and cephalopods. Moreover, the book identifies for the first time Late Ordovician volcanic events in northern Zhejiang province. The work represents a major contribution to research on Paleozoic strata in the Lower Yangtze region, and sheds new light on understanding the Hirnantian glacial event and biological extinction event in South China by providing a high-precision time scale. In addition, the book opens an important avenue for future research on sponge evolution after the Cambrian life explosion. As such, it offers a unique and valuable asset for researchers and graduate students alike.

Book Revolutionary Legacy Power Structure and Grassroots Capitalism under the Red Flag in China

Download or read book Revolutionary Legacy Power Structure and Grassroots Capitalism under the Red Flag in China written by Qi Zhang and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-11-05 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do political elites in authoritarian regimes, even within the same country, engage in different levels of predatory behavior, whereby some foster vibrant capitalism and others suffocate the innovative private sector? This book proposes a theory of localized property-rights protection under authoritarianism. By combining in-depth fieldwork with archival research and quantitative data analysis, Qi Zhang and Mingxing Liu discuss the post-1949 conflicts between dominant and marginalized factions in the Chinese province of Zhejiang. These conflicts resulted in systemic vulnerabilities among the marginalized local cadres, thus motivating them to form alliances with their grassroots constituents. They therefore provided their constituents with quasi-public goods, such as property-rights protection, to increase their odds of political survival. Zhang and Liu argue that this framework can apply both to the Mao era and to the current reform era, and it also can be extended beyond China to a wider context.

Book Geological Disasters in Deep Engineering Mechanism Warning and Risk mitigation

Download or read book Geological Disasters in Deep Engineering Mechanism Warning and Risk mitigation written by Guang-Liang Feng and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-06-15 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increasing demand for infrastructure construction as the global economy progresses, the need for exploration and utilization of deep underground space becomes more crucial. Various deep underground projects are planned, are under construction, and have been built to encounter great construction challenges due to the complex geo-environment such as strong tectonic movement, fragile geo-environment and complex thermo-hydro-mechanical-chemical conditions. These deep engineering projects could be endangered by different kinds of geological disasters, such as intense rockburst, large deformation, strong water inrush, and large-scale collapse, which might result in massive loss of life and economic damage during the construction of deep underground projects. It is necessary to take proactive measures to ensure that the development of deep engineering projects is risk-informed and sustainable. Efforts are being called for strengthening science and technology innovation and cooperation in geological disaster mitigation and sustainable development during the construction of deep engineering projects. It is paramount to use new technologies and international cooperation to jointly tackle the geological disasters risks and achieve sustainable development. To mitigate the risk of geological disaster in deep engineering under the complicate geo-environment, the mechanism of the formation and evolution of geological disasters in deep engineering needs to be understood. The testing, monitoring, simulation, risk assessment and early warning methods for geological disaster in deep engineering are also needed urgently. New theories, methods and techniques related to the mechanism, warning and risk mitigation of geological disasters in deep engineering will be extremely helpful for the construction safety of deep engineering.

Book CHINA FOOD SECURITY AND AGRICULTURAL GOING GLOBAL

Download or read book CHINA FOOD SECURITY AND AGRICULTURAL GOING GLOBAL written by Han Jun and published by American Academic Press. This book was released on 2022-11-21 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Through decades of efforts, China has overall achieved self-sufficiency in food supply, which is the result of effective policies and measures adopted by the Chinese government. This book focuses on China’s food security strategy and agricultural going global strategy and goes into details on policies and measures for achieving domestic food security. It specially analyzes status and development trend of China’s corn industry since corn is the most sensitive grain variety that plays an important role as food, feed and raw material for bioenergy. It also studies overseas agricultural development potential for agricultural investment and cooperation globally. It finally elaborates China’s agricultural going global strategy, with specific cases to evaluate policy effect, in order to promote international cooperation in agriculture. The conclusions are that as the world’s most populated country, China should rely on its domestic production to ensure food supply. However, with intensified constraints on resources and environment, China should appropriately adjust its food security goals to ensure the basic self-sufficiency of cereals and rely more on global markets for non-cereal grain varieties. Looking to the future, China should establish a food security system that is efficient, open and sustainable through profound reform to increase its domestic food productivity, promote sustainable development of agriculture, and expand international cooperation in agriculture.
