Book Words Across the Taiwan Strait

Download or read book Words Across the Taiwan Strait written by John Franklin Copper and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1993, the Taiwan Affairs Office and Information Office of the State Council of the People's Republic of China published a document called 'The Taiwan Question and the Reunification of China.' This 24-page pamphlet, or booklet, subsequently became known as Beijing's 'White Paper' on Taiwan. Strongly advocating Taiwan's reunification with mainland China, the paper appeared to reflect the People's Republic of China's opposition to the Republic of China making a bid to participate in the United Nations or other international governmental organizations. In this volume, John Copper offers his analysis and critique of Beijing's 'White Paper.' Included in the appendices are the text of the original white paper, Taiwan's response to the document and Taiwan's guidelines for national unification.

Book Bridging the Strait

Download or read book Bridging the Strait written by Hsin-hsing Wu and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gradual rise of Taiwan's Democratic Progressive Party has helped to strengthen and consolidate sentiment within Taiwan against the reunification of the Republic of China and the People's Republic of China. In this study, Wu explores the links between reunification and recent political changes within Taiwan, and examines how these changes have become a serious challenge to both Chinese governments' reunification policies. The author draws on Western scholarship and primary sources from the Taiwanese perspective, and uses established integration theory as a means of analysis. He examines six factors--the economic and political systems of each country, public opinion in Taiwan, the transactions between the two Chinas, Taiwan's politics, and the Taiwan Independence Movement--to determine the likelihood of peaceful reunification.

China’s relation to Taiwan has been in constant contention since the founding of the People’s Republic of China in October 1949 and the creation of the defeated Kuomintang (KMT) exile regime on the island two months later. The island’s autonomous sovereignty has continually been challenged, initially because of the KMT’s insistence that it continue to represent not just Taiwan but all of China—and later because Taiwan refused to cede sovereignty to the then-dominant power that had arisen on the other side of the Taiwan Strait. One thing that makes Taiwan so politically difficult and yet so intellectually fascinating is that it is not merely a security problem, but a ganglion of interrelated puzzles. The optimistic hope of the Ma Ying-jeou administration for a new era of peace and cooperation foundered on a landslide victory by the Democratic Progressive Party, which has made clear its intent to distance Taiwan from China’s political embrace. The Taiwanese are now waiting with bated breath as the relationship tautens. Why did détente fail, and what chance does Taiwan have without it? Contributors to this volume focus on three aspects of the evolving quandary: nationalistic identity, social economy, and political strategy.

Book The Reunification of China

Download or read book The Reunification of China written by Lai To Lee and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1991-03-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of the reunification of China has been haunting both sides of the Taiwan Strait since the departure of the Kuomintang from mainland China to Taiwan in 1949. This in-depth study examines the policies of Beijing and Taipei toward reunification. The China policies of the other major powers, with special reference to the Taiwan issue, are also explored. The work deals with possible options or solutions to the reunification issue, with options available to the concerned parties, and with interactions and trends in the Taiwan strait. The problems and prospects for China's reunification are clearly delineated. A special postscript on the Tiananmen Square issue and the repercussions of that incident on relations between Beijing and Taipei is of timely interest. The author proposes that the major avenue by which Beijing and Taipei could work toward reunification is through confidence-building measures and practical exchanges. The Reunification of China is a comprehensive study of a sensitive issue of contemporary Chinese politics. In the discussion of the policies of the major powers, much emphasis is given to the role the United States could play in reunification. Possible ways in which reunification could be mapped out are studied through alternatives and proposals. Interactions and trends in the Taiwan strait--such as the visitation program by Taipei, cultural exchanges, and economic discourse--are focused on. This volume will be of value to those concerned with Asian studies, sociology of mass movements, and revolution and political violence.

Book The International Status of Taiwan in the New World Order

Download or read book The International Status of Taiwan in the New World Order written by Jean-Marie Henckaerts and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 1996-09-12 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the most important issues determining the international status of Taiwan today: its international legal status, the viability of its flexible democracy, its efforts to gain participation or membership in international organizations, most notably the United Nations, and its future relations with mainland China, ranging from reunification to declared independence. Issues of American and European foreign policy and of domestic Chinese and Taiwanese politics are also addressed where relevant. This book is unique in that it looks at the question of Taiwan from the perspective of both international law and politics as it confronts the imperatives of law and the limitations of real world politics. As a result it offers insights and strategies that are both sensible and feasible. This book is aimed at scholars and practitioners of international law and international relations alike.
