Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from China's Place in the Sun On June 21st, 1921, General Jan Christian Smuts, Premier of the Union of South Africa, in addressing the session of the British Imperial Conference in London, declared: "Our temptation is still to look on the European stage as of first importance. It is no longer so. Undoubtedly the scene has shifted from Europe to the Far East and to the Pacific... The problems of the Pacific are, to my mind, the world problems of the next 50 years or more... There, I believe, the next great chapter in human history will be written." On the same day, in Washington, the Secretary of Navy of the United States made public the plans for the reorganization of the Atlantic and Pacific fleets, according to which the finest ships in the American navy, the oil burners and the superdreadnoughts, all of the newer and greater types of warships, were transferred to the Pacific. According to the press report: "The growth of American interests in the Pacific has influenced naval strategists in favor of concentrating the greatest strength of the United States in that ocean. It is held that there is no menace to any other power in such a policy, but that with Hawaii, the Philippines and other widely separated Pacific possessions to defend it is the part of wisdom to familiarize the main fleet with the conditions which would confront it with reference to harbors and strategic conditions should the United States be called upon to defend its Pacific Ocean interests." Book excerpt: ‘One of the masters of modern Chinese literature’ Jung Chang This gripping dystopia contrasts the reality of life in China today with the sunny optimism of the ‘Chinese dream’. One dusk in early June, in a town deep in the Balou mountains, fourteen-year-old Li Niannian notices that something strange is going on. As the residents would usually be settling down for the night, instead they start appearing in the streets and fields. There are people everywhere. Li Niannian watches, mystified. Until he realises the people are dreamwalking, carrying on with their daily business as if the sun hadn’t already gone down. And before too long, as more and more people succumb, in the black of night all hell breaks loose. Set over the course of one night, The Day the Sun Died pits chaos and darkness against the bright ‘Chinese dream’ promoted by President Xi Jinping. We are thrown into the middle of an increasingly strange and troubling waking nightmare as Li Niannian and his father struggle to save the town, and persuade the beneficent sun to rise again. Praise for Yan Lianke's books: ‘Nothing short of a masterpiece’ Guardian ‘A hyper-real tour de force, a blistering condemnation of political corruption and excess’ Financial Times ‘Mordant satire from a brave fabulist’ Daily Mail ‘Exuberant and imaginative’ Sunday Times ‘I can think of few better novelists than Yan, with his superlative gifts for storytelling and penetrating eye for truth’ New York Times Book Review

Book Korea s Place in the Sun A Modern History Updated Edition

Download or read book Korea s Place in the Sun A Modern History Updated Edition written by Bruce Cumings and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2005-09-17 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Passionate, cantankerous, and fascinating. Rather like Korea itself."--Nicholas D. Kristof, New York Times Book Review Korea has endured a "fractured, shattered twentieth century," and this updated edition brings Bruce Cumings's leading history of the modern era into the present. The small country, overshadowed in the imperial era, crammed against great powers during the Cold War, and divided and decimated by the Korean War, has recently seen the first real hints of reunification. But positive movements forward are tempered by frustrating steps backward. In the late 1990s South Korea survived its most severe economic crisis since the Korean War, forcing a successful restructuring of its political economy. Suffering through floods, droughts, and a famine that cost the lives of millions of people, North Korea has been labeled part of an "axis of evil" by the George W. Bush administration and has renewed its nuclear threats. On both sides Korea seems poised to continue its fractured existence on into the new century, with potential ramifications for the rest of the world.

Book Sun Yatsen

Download or read book Sun Yatsen written by David B. Gordon and published by Pearson. This book was released on 2010 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biography introduces readers to the life and times of Sun Yatsen (1866-1925), a Chinese revolutionary whose popularity stretches across Greater China and into the 21st century. Concise and incisive, each interpretive biography in the Library of World Biography Series focuses on a person whose actions and ideas either significantly influenced world events or whose life reflects important themes and developments in global history. Sun Yatsen (1866-1925) was ceaselessly dynamic, leading a movement among Chinese to overthrow the last traditional dynasty of China's history and replace it with a modern-style republic. When this republic became a reality, he briefly served as its president, afterward continuing to influence his country for decades to come through the political party he created, the controversial foreign assistance he accepted, and the many writings he left behind. China is today rapidly transforming itself into the international powerhouse that Sun envisioned. In this respect, Sun's life story--occurring as it did on the dividing line between traditional dynastic rule and the search for what would replace it--enables us to understand a broad swath of China's road to contemporary prominence.
