Book China s Millions 1888 Classic Reprint

Download or read book China s Millions 1888 Classic Reprint written by J. Hudson Taylor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-01-06 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from China's Millions, 1888 Months of earnest prayer resulted in a deep conviction that a special agency was essential for the evangelisation of Inland China and that, by simple trust in god, such' an agency might be raised up and sustained without interfering injuriously with any existing 'work. I had an equally deep conviction that god would have me to seek from Him the needed workers, and to go forth with them. But for a long time unbelief hindered my taking the first step. How inconsistent unbelief always is I had no doubt that, if I prayed for workers, in the Name of the lord jesus christ, they would be given me. I had no doubt that, in answer to Such prayer, the means for our going forth would be provided, and that doors would be opened before us in unreached parts Of the Empire. But I had not then learned to trust god for keeping power and grace for myself, so no wonder that I could not trust Him to keep others who might be prepared to go with me. I feared that in the midst of the dangers, difficulties, and trials which would necessarily be connected with such a work, some who were comparatively inexperienced Christians might break down, and bitterly reproach me for having encouraged them to undertake an enterprise for which they were unequal. Book Opium Traders and Their Worlds Volume One

Download or read book Opium Traders and Their Worlds Volume One written by M. Kienholz and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-10-13 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Opium Traders and Their Worlds examines the opium trade with a detective's investigative approach. The author uses evidence to dismiss many of the false claims commonly held with regard to the so-called "legitimacy" of the Old China trade, presents proof of important figures who were deeply involved in all parts of the world and shows how world events were affected by famous men in opium hierarchies. Lateral contributors to the drug trade include shipbuilders who fashioned their craft to meet needs of the commerce, designing specially built Indiamen, clippers, and "fast crabs." Ms. Kienholz shows how vicious competition in the trade moved players like chess pieces, with winners and losers shifting positions. Her research into the production of the new "opioids" such as oxycodone is an area not previously probed.

Book Dare to Invent the Future

Download or read book Dare to Invent the Future written by Clapperton Chakanetsa Mavhunga and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2023-11-21 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A rallying manifesto for the innovative problem-solving we need to build a better, more verdant, and sustainable planetary existence. Academics are letting Africa down. With all that we know, what do we have to show for it? Whose lives have been changed for the better by it? What have we done for and with our communities lately? In this provocative book—the first in a trilogy—Clapperton Chakanetsa Mavhunga argues that our critical thinkers must become actual thinker-doers. Taking its title from one of Thomas Sankara’s most inspirational speeches, Dare to Invent the Future looks for moments in Africa’s story where precedents of critical thought and knowledge in service of problem-solving are evident to inspire readers to dare to invent such a knowledge system. Mavhunga revisits insights from Edward Wilmot Blyden, Booker T. Washington, Aimé Césaire, Frantz Fanon, Amílcar Cabral, Julius Nyerere, and Thomas Sankara to illustrate how the academic disciplines have been, and could be, deployed in the service of and through problem-solving, building on what people are doing and know. At its core, he writes, knowledge in the service of and through problem-solving derives from reading the past for new questions, doing due diligence in the present, and contriving an anticipatory approach toward the future. Questioning the fundamental premises of Western and white knowledge production, especially regarding science and technology, Mavhunga proposes in this book refreshingly new approaches to thinking-doing that stem from African realities, in the hopes of inspiring a generation that will run toward, not away from, problems to solve them.
