Book China and Western Nonferrous Metal Markets

Download or read book China and Western Nonferrous Metal Markets written by Carmine Nappi and published by [Kingston, Ont.] : Centre for Resource Studies, Queen's University. This book was released on 1993 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study analyzes the evolution of the Chinese minerals and metals industry during the last two decades. After presenting the geographical, economic and socio-political realities which make up the environment in which this industry has developed, the study examines its main characteristics (quality of reserves, production, consumption, trade flows) and the chief variables influencing their evolution. The study then provides sectoral analyses of the Chinese aluminum, copper, nickel, lead and zinc industries, to determine the past and probable future degree of import dependence for these metals which account for 95 percent of Chinese nonferrous production. This study discusses the opportunities presented by China's potential increased dependence on international sources, analyzes the impact of Chinese imports on the levels and stability of prices, and assesses their possible effect on the competitiveness of mineral producers in the Asia-Pacific zone. Finally, it discusses a possible future Chinese mineral policy which gives greater recognition to the benefits of a specialization in the production and export of goods which are more intensive in labour than in capital or energy resources.

Book Identifying the Linkages between Major Mining Commodity Prices and China s Economic Growth Implications for Latin America

Download or read book Identifying the Linkages between Major Mining Commodity Prices and China s Economic Growth Implications for Latin America written by Mr.Yongzhen Yu and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2011-04-01 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Major mining commodity prices are inherently volatile and cyclical. High levels of investment in China have been a key driver in the strong world demand for minerals and metals over the past decade. The urbanization and industrialization of China has been an important factor behind the increase in domestic demand and high investment growth, while its export sector is also an important source of growth and plays a critical role as a catalyst. Activity in infrastructure, construction, real estate, and automobile manufacturing all contribute to the strong demand for minerals. Over the next five years, the Chinese demand is expected to remain strong, supported by investment and gradually rising consumption rates. However, in the second part of this decade economic growth in China could slow down. For Latin American countries, export receipts should remain strong over the next five years and beyond, given the continued strong demand from China.

Book China s Economy in Transition

Download or read book China s Economy in Transition written by Mr.Anoop Singh and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China's current account surplus has declined to around one-quarter the peak reached before the global financial crisis. While this is a major reduction in China's external imbalance, it has not been accompanied by a decisive shift toward consumption-based growth. Instead, the compression in its external surplus has been accomplished through increasing fixed investment so that it is now an even higher share of China's national economy. This increasing reliance on fixed investment as the main driver of China's growth raises questions about the durability of the compression in the external surplus and the sustainability of the current growth model that has had unprecedented success in lifting about 500 million people out of poverty over the last three decades. This volume examines various aspects of the rebalancing process underway in China, highlighting policy lessons for achieving stable, sustainable, and inclusive growth.
