Book Moscow and the Emergence of Communist Power in China 1925 30

Download or read book Moscow and the Emergence of Communist Power in China 1925 30 written by Bruce Elleman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-01-30 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the emergence of Communist power in China during the interwar period, focusing especially on the role of the Soviet Union and the 1927 Nanchang Uprising. It describes the history behind the alliance between the Chinese Communists and Nationalists, the impact of the USSR's military and political advisers, and the success of the Northern Expedition that resulted in the April 1927 purge of the Communists from the Nationalist Party. It explores the debates between leading communists in Moscow, notably Stalin – who thought that China was ready in 1927 for an urban-based Communist revolution, similar to what had happened in Russia ten years before – and Trotsky who opposed it. It goes on examine the seizure of power in Nanchang by the Communists, the establishment of China's first short-lived soviet republic, and the reasons why the soviet soon collapsed. It explains the consequences of the rising, including the adoption by the Communists of guerilla warfare, the foundation of China's second soviet, and after moving to northwest China during the 1930s, the rise of Communist power throughout all of mainland China which culminated in the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949. The book stresses the importance of the mythology that evolved around the Nanchang Uprising: since criticism of the Nanchang Uprising would open themselves up to accusations that they were Trotskyites, the Chinese Communists created the myth that the Nanchang Uprising was a success, and later dated the origins of the People’s Liberation Army to this event.

Book Chinese Politics in the Xi Jinping Era

Download or read book Chinese Politics in the Xi Jinping Era written by Cheng Li and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2016-10-18 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese politics are at a crossroads as President Xi Jinping amasses personal power and tests the constraints of collective leadership. In the years since he became general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party in 2012, Xi Jinping has surprised many people in China and around the world with his bold anti-corruption campaign and his aggressive consolidation of power. Given these new developments, we must rethink how we analyze Chinese politics—an urgent task as China now has more influence on the global economy and regional security than at any other time in modern history. Chinese Politics in the Xi Jinping Era examines how the structure and dynamics of party leadership have evolved since the late 1990s and argues that "inner-party democracy"—the concept of collective leadership that emphasizes deal making based on accepted rules and norms—may pave the way for greater transformation within China's political system. Xi's legacy will largely depend on whether he encourages or obstructs this trend of political institutionalization in the governance of the world's most populous and increasingly pluralistic country. Cheng Li also addresses the recruitment and composition of the political elite, a central concern in Chinese politics. China analysts will benefit from the meticulously detailed biographical information of the 376 members of the 18th Central Committee, including tables and charts detailing their family background, education, occupation, career patterns, and mentor-patron ties.

Book Will China Become Democratic

Download or read book Will China Become Democratic written by Yongnian Zheng and published by Marshall Cavendish Academic. This book was released on 2004 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a close look at major issues about China's democratisation, highlighting main barriers to democratisation and providing key angles to understanding China's great difficulties in making democratic progress. The author examines the possible linkages between elite, class and regime transition in China, and maintains that China's democratic development needs to be understood in the context of state-society relations, all the while emphasising that class power is playing an increasingly significant role in China's elite politics and the people's struggle for democracy.

Book The Anatomy of Political Power in China

Download or read book The Anatomy of Political Power in China written by Guoguang Wu and published by Marshall Cavendish Academic. This book was released on 2005 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political power is a great enigma in contemporary China, as it operates often behind the closed doors of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP). In the recent decades of reform, it has changed greatly in many ways while retaining its authoritarian nature. How do Chinese leaders rule this huge country? How does the regime communicate with its bureaucracies and ordinary citizens? What happened to politics in recent decades as economic marketisation and social liberalisation formed the major currents of the nation's developments? And, what are the implications of all these domestic affairs to China's foreign relations and vice versa? This volume is an intellectual exercise to explore these questions that have for a long time occupied a central position in academic explorations of Chinese politics. The book covers topics such as state-enterprise relationship (a fundamental indicator of the political economy of Chinese reform), central-local relations (an issue that has perplexed the power arrangements in China for over a thousand years in general and since 1949 in particular), relations between popular participation and political reform, and the relationship between individual liberty and political democracy (a classic question in political theory that frames political debates in contemporary China). These collected essays give the reader an insightful peek behind the closed doors of Chinese politics and governance.
